A kid described this movie to me when I was in elementary school. I thought she was making it up, and wondered why I'd never noticed before how funny she was. A few months later it was on TV. I was enchanted! Watched it every chance I got! (They'd filmed it in my neighborhood) I love the xylophone soundtrack, the plant's voice and Seymour's wacky mom: "You promised you wouldn't get married til you bought me an iron lung.""But you been breathin' for years, Ma." "Well, it aint easy. It aint easy, son."
It is no wonder I have never heard of this original story. People were not ready for this kind of humor decades later when it came out in the musical. No one was ready for it in 1960. And look at Jack Nicholson! He is so young. Can't help but miss Steve Martin though... Thank you for finding this and sharing it.
Love this movie. Days of my young years - Perestroika times. We've got lots of excellent quality western movies on TV. Times full of hope in normal life, best future. Oh God...
I had no idea this wasn't a musical; I'm coming from the Tiny Desk performance trying to find the Rick Moranis version. I feel like I can really enjoy and appreciate the evolution of Roger and Charles' work now.
I was born the year they made this, I remember seeing it on our little black and white tv, i was young and couldn't make sense, a comedy ? Horror ? Still confused.

Magic Mirror: Over the seven jewelled hills, beyond the seventh fall, in the cottage of the Seven Dwarfs, dwells Snow White, fairest one of all. Queen: Snow White lies dead in the forest. The huntsman has brought me proof. Behold, her heart. Magic Mirror: Snow White still lives, fairest in the land. 'Tis the heart of a pig you hold in your hand. Queen: The heart of a pig!
