Sondheim absolutely pushed the boundaries of what could (and should) be done musically AND lyrically. And Charles Kimbrough was adorable. ❤RIP❤

I agree with the comment that Elaine Stritch is adorable in this, and I enjoy her interpretation. Unlike some of the other versions I've seen, she doesn't lean hard into bitterness or sarcasm, so there's a lightness to this version, and a wry playfulness (I also see the focus and command as she tracks with the song).

Her range before Company was a normal low mezzo range, after so many years drinking she was confined in super strict range (closer to the tenor one), and she still managed to do lots of amazing things with it.

"Company" was my first Broadway show, and I loved it. Stephen Sondheim is a genius, and the cast of the show -- including Charles Kimbrough, Barbara Barrie, Elaine Stritch, Beth Howland, etc. (all virtually unknown at the time) -- all went on from this brilliant show to very successful national theatrical and TV careers. The success of everyone involved in this innovative musical is well-deserved.

I think this song is hilarious. I first heard this Company(1970) album at CSUF on the big lp in 2004 what a show it must had been!

I love elainesresponse when asked why she seems mad at the woman for their ambitions. Woman who want someone to rescue them leads to an unfulfilling life. Elaine had sympathy yet said in response “ spending the afternoon choosing a hat just isn’t good enough.
