The scariest part was when laura killed herself. I wasn't expecting that at all Damn

I like that this movie has basically no "good guys". And the "bad guy" is the most sympathetic.

At the end The Lodge felt like it intended to be the most fucked up cautionary tale ever made. That final scene was BRUTAL, but I found it extremely cathartic (in the darkest way possible).

"The poor kids"? I'm sorry, the little a-holes knew she had trauma and weaponized it to make her crack. This movie feels like the feature length meaning of "THEY HAD IT COMIN'".

The mother's suicide scene...man, i was speachless and couldn't react full several minutes after seeing that. Masterfully done scene.

Those are some really crazy children. If they wanted revenge they should have gotten it on their dad not on her . But it came around full circle and I was happy seeing that end

What absolutely awful kids. She was trying her best to get the kids to like her, trying her best to start a new life and be a good person. They should have returned the meds the minute she said she needed them. Gaslighting a survivor like that is the lowest of the low. They got what was coming to them and they deserved their fate.

This one seriously upset me. The mom, the dad trying to get his kids to move on so quickly. The kids absolutely horrid treatment of Grace. Them straight up killing her dog. Their sick “prank”

It kinda hurt when you said he shouldn’t date her bc of her past. She was a child forced into that cult. She can be insanely beautiful and smart and kind and past trauma will still be held against her by some people. If she recovered, in reality, that’d make her a stronger person, likely able to deal with crazy shit better. Also it’s the kids fault for taking away her meds and manipulating her. It’s like stealing someone’s blood pressure meds and scaring them abs wondering why they have a heart attack....smh

I like psychological thrillers that really get into how broken the human mind can become when we’re pushed too far - especially when that person tries to become better but people or situations around them won’t let them heal. It’s depressingly believable. Okay, sure the kids’ plan was suspiciously methodical, especially when they continued despite the storm potentially endangering their lives, but kids can be crueler and smarter than most people give them credit for.

When she was crimping her eyelashes at the beginning and suddenly doubled over I got such a fright. I thought she did the same thing my mother once did and had that feeling you get when you see someone get an painful eye injury. She was crimping her eyelashes in a hotel room and her roommate ran in and startled her. Ripped her eyelashes right off. *shudder*

Alternate tittle could be: "If you didn't hate kids before, you sure as hell will now!" Yeah yeah, the dad ius to blame, fuck off. When I was the age of the son I was well aware of what a person having a mental breakdown looked like. Plus, the extents they went through go beyond normal children so honestly, the writting is a little iffy on making me believe kids would be able to plan this much. Yes I am aware leaving them alone was a bad idea but still. IDK if I can call this a horror movie when for the last quarter I wasn't scared but PISSED OFF Also. I called that she would kill the dad just about the moment he showed her the gun. It was just kind of too obvious, and by the time the prank was revealed my thought was "Yep, dad's gonna walk in and she's gonna shoot him." This movie was a meh for me

This movie is currently streaming on Hulu.

I just watched this one on Hulu this weekend, I really liked it. I went in basically knowing nothing and I thought it was pretty damn good.

This movie disturbed me hard how can two little kids do

The real bad guy in the show just in my opinion was the father for not letting time pass. The movie makes it clear they don’t want that and he just couldn’t accept that. Yes the kids in the movie are messed up for taking her meds but she shouldn’t have been anywhere near kids in the first place. The scenes prior to her meds being taken I think shows she was clearly on the edge and them doing that obviously is what pushed her.

"Oh no, the formerly mentally unstable person we pushed back into insanity is now trying to kill us! How could we have seen this coming?"

Moral of the story: don't gaslight sole survivors of suicide cults. I know that might seem kind of specific, but it's pretty sound logic.

This and Unfriended. Horror stories where you start off cheering for the victims, then ending up supporting the ghost/killer because turns out the victims are assholes.

This movie reminds me of an "Am I the asshole?" post where this guy who has schizophrenia and his gf got into it because she hid his medication, and she waited until he had a full on panic induced tearful breakdown to say that she hid them as a prank. She then had the audacity to play victim when he yelled at her for doing it, I think it took him like an hr of searching before it got to that point. She kept telling him that she didn't know he couldn't handle a joke. The kicker is, it was the bf who made the "Am I the asshole?" post.

And this is why you need to send kids to counseling after their parental figure does, especially by suicide. Otherwise the kids are going to get wrapped up in their own thoughts, and then come up with their own warped conclusions on the matter. Also don’t take away people’s medication.

i think also with the applying makeup excessively at the beginning wasnt just her hoping at reconciliation but perhaps for her to put on a front to show that she is doing well and moving on like he is despite her obvious issues after the separation.

The only person who I feel even remotely sorry for is the girlfriend. She almost had her life back together.

Imma be honest that scene where laura shot herself actually made me jump even though there was no sound that shit caught me wayyy off guard

This was honestly one of the psychological movies that had me really emotional. Especially when Grace was clutching her dog. She mentioned that the dog was one of the few things she got after surviving from the cult and now it's dead. This movie was so bleak, caused by actual human beings and that makes it even scary.

Alright, I have never seen a funeral use black balloons. Also turn on some lights in your houses!

I think the mom that died at the beginning could have also been one of the dad's previous patient. She was emotionally dependent to her ex-husband and the dad seem to seek more personal gratification in a marriage then real love or healthy relationships.

The cult from Grace's past was based on Heaven's Gate, a cult, where 39 members also committed mass suicide in a communal house with shrouds covering their bodies.

I thought the little girl took the cake for the acting. The crying in the beginning of the film and the sheer horrific crying during the "Last Supper". She showed true emotion.

“I’ll just leave my grieving children alone with my traumatized, heavily medicated, former patient that I left their mother for until Christmas even though they’ve never met and are absolute strangers. It’s fool proof!” I just......Everyone in this movie needs to be placed under arrest

kids took it too damn far. the minute she told them she NEEDS it, they should've at least given her meds back. they already knew about her past. sorry to say but they deserved it. I still blame the dad, why would he leave the kids alone when they obviously hated her? that's just plain irresponsible.

The moms suicide scared the shit out of me because I didn’t expect anything interesting at all that early.

Just to point out the suicide in the beginning is very disturbing, based on the fact that the way the body jumps back then slowly slumps down is scarily accurate to a real life suicide and not some Hollywood whatever shot scene.

I have never wanted kids to die in a horror movie before these 2.

I can’t watch horrors, especially supernatural ones, but listening to these at work is a great way to experience these movies without the scare and horror. Thanks for watching the movies for me :)

Cool facts- her cult leader dad, is the actress actual dad that apparently grew up a couple of years in a cult & the house on the hill was a house they found, so not build for the set, but no longer exist.

It's interesting how, even though the lady killed the kids and the father, she is easily the most likable character. The father is dating her as a pet project, probably did the same with the kids mom. The kids were unbelievably messed up shitlords who thought it'd be funny to take medication away from a woman who literally depends on it, just cause she fell in love with their father. The ex-cult girl literally did nothing wrong in all honesty, it's not her fault that she was raised in a cult, hell, she saw hundreds of dead bodies at a super young age, she was deeply affected by that alone. Kids are stupid, dad is a bad person, the lady is just tryna be a good person till she snaps.

"The poor kids" drove her crazy and for some reason thought she was kidding she told them she needed those pills. Horror movie children are terrible is the moral of this story.

I completely understand why kids might place blame on her in such a situation. But what they did, is beyond cruel.

I just realized Aiden must have spiked graces hot chocolate with the sleeping pill later mentioned. That’s how they were able to move everything without her noticing.

While I give the kids a lot of blame for their fate, their father was even worse to me. His kids were going through grief over their mother's suicide which traumatized them and only 6 months in he's talking about marrying his new piece? They made it clear that they didn't want to be stuck with his girlfriend and they had strong negative feelings toward her and instead of putting their feelings first (and giving them more time) he insists they go on a trip with him and his girlfriend to the log cabin they used to go to with their mother. The icing on the cake he leaves them alone with a woman they hate and has mental illness. And he gives her access to the gun safe. Genius! Those kids needed intense therapy for their grief not a week long trip with his new gf.

i feel so bad for grace especially with what happened to her dog. that dog was symbolic of her finally gaining control of her life and those assholes killed it and killed off the little light in grace with it.

Oh I thought the twist was going to be that she was hallucinating/dying the whole time due to the heater releasing carbon monoxide into a trapped space, since it was faulty and hissing. Whoop.

The moral of this film was, “know when to end the joke”

1) You missed the detail of Aidan drugging Grace's drink. That's how the kids managed to hide all the stuff without her waking up. And yes, they did plan all of it from the very beginning. There is a scene of them sitting in front of the dollhouse and quietly talking before the travel to the cabin, they were clearly discussing their plan back then. And Aidan is also shown to pack up some climbing equipment, that how he managed to fake his hanging later on. 2) Grace didn't shoot Richard because she got angry with him for not listening or whatever. She tried to persuade him that he's already dead and was sure nothing would actually happen - you also didn't mention the fact that she tried to shoot herself first, but the gun misfired. By the way, it's so interesting that every character in the family dies or is about to die from a gunshot. I mean, the filmmakers could choose a different form of suicide for Laura, but they chose the gun. It makes all the deaths feel like one long connected tragedy, like it was somehow Grace's inescapable fate to destroy the whole family. 3) I must say, I have some questions to this characters. The dad's decision to leave is stupid on multiple levels. I mean, the trip to the cabin takes 5-6 hours, if the roads are clean. So, his plan was to drive 5-6 hours to the cabin, then, the very next day, 5-6 hours back home, then, in a few days, 5-6 hours back to the cabin, and then, after Christmas, 5-6 more hours back home? I know that people in US have a thing for cars and driving, but isn't that exhausting? And the kids decisions are stupid too. I'm not even talking about the whole gaslighting idea, but why don't they stop the whole thing after Grace becomes physically dangerous, hitting Mia? That's the moment they should've realized they are stuck with a crazy lady, who NEEDS her medication. And why didn't they steal the gun from her even after they had seen it? Also, they are worried that she will freeze to death when she seats outside for too long, and that's what makes them tell her the truth. But why didn't they do it when she decided to walk to a town, wearing no outer clothing but a blanket? She totally could have died at that point. Also, after they realize she's dangerous, why do they hide in the attic that has no locking door? Their room has one, and the basement has this secret area where they hid all the stuff, why not go there? And please don't say they're just kids. According to the obituary, Aidan is 17. He should have known better.

Why does everyone think the dad was a psychologist? At the beginning of the movie, the kids ask about Grace being apart of their dad’s book. He was a writer and met her while researching cults. Also, I’m pretty positive he didn’t know she was medicated. There is a scene in the lodge where he enters their room while Grace is taking her pills and she hides them behind her back without him noticing. She was never his patient. Don’t know how that idea came about. Anyway, the kids were little sociopaths that shouldn’t of touched her medication in the first place. I felt no sympathy for them in the end.

I have a step mom. Hated her. Thought she was taking away my dad from me and my siblings. We grew up and got a long. NEVER had it gone to a point like that. I feel for the kids, but blame them for their downfall.

The real villain is the dad. He knew how traumatized and hurt his kids were and also knew his girlfriend was mentally unstable and traumatized. He knew that the kids blamed the girlfriend for their mom taking her own life. We gotta remember theyre kids - that said they aren’t going to understand things as an adult would. That said, neither the kids or Grace were in the right mental state to be left ALONE in a lodge in the middle of nowhere.

Can't say I feel too bad for the kids. What did they think would happen when they did this to a woman recovering from a cult?

Honestly this movie is just really sad when thinking about it from Grace’s perspective. Everyone in the family sucked and honestly I find it hard to have sympathy for the kids knowing they knew what they were doing.

To be honest, I haaaaated everyone in this movie, except Grace. She went through hell and then once she started to heal, everyone sends her right back. Imo, Grace isn't the villain at all.

I've heard a lot of people compare this movie to Hereditary (and often say "it's not as scary as Hereditary"), and while I think some of the comparisons are kind of warranted, The Lodge left me with a deeper sense of complete tragedy than Hereditary did. Hereditary was terrifying and bleak and deeply disturbing, but this movie is the very definition of tragedy: everything that happens could have been avoided, but the characters curse themselves at every turn. When it was over I just felt bereft. Great summary and explanation as always, FoundFlix!

I have never hated two kids more than this. I also lost my dad and have a stepfather I'm not too fond of, but if I found out he was a suicide cult survivor I wouldn't gaslight him back into insanity. Not because I would be scared of him hurting me, but because I have fucking decency. Grief is a reason, but not an excuse.
