So cool! Nice to see that it hasn't been totally ripped up and destroyed by off-roaders yet unlike so much of our state! You can actually take it in and enjoy the history without being deafened by them, and really feel what it would be like to go back in time. Thanks for posting this, reminds me why we moved here and all the amazing history we have yet to explore in this amazing desert we now call home!
Wow, it's crazy to think those structures are so close to Vulture City but hidden enough that if nobody tells you about them, they will go unappreciated. Great find. Thanks for the trip!
Enjoyed this adventure mostly because it led me to watch your "Before and After trip thru Vulture City" These two videos totally made me consider how much I truly do not know about my State of Choice. I moved to the Verde Valley AZ some 30 years ago when I was 50. Don't know how many time I've been to Wickenburg which I enjoyed, but had no clue as to who the man it was named for was. Maybe my head was in the sand, but I'd never heard of him or the town of Vulture City. Now that I'm retired and my wife is no longer here it is so refreshing to discover all of the relevant historical gems this wonderful state has to offer. Traveling this state with you and Amy makes me feel like a kid at Christmas, excited about the gift I'm unwrapping now and the ones still waiting to be explored under your Cactus Atlas Tree.

Google Lens to the rescue! It is from a company called West Bend, and it's from the 1970s. Wonder who was there in the 70s? How long have you been exploring Arizona? Oh, wow, thank you! Curious about the coffee maker indeed! In the closet in the back section was a calendar from 1993 as well. It does make one wonder about its life after serving as a schoolhouse. 😊

Or hike? You know, enjoy it in a way that doesn't damage the desert and make such a racket. A lot of people actually moved here to enjoy the history and nature, and want to do so in a peaceful way that doesn't disturb it

Good suggestion. Was just watching vids on how to perhaps buff out clear coat scratches, which most of them seem to be pretty shallow. I like your idea though and am absolutely going to look into that. Thanks for watching!
At 30:37 minutes, the view of the roofline where the chimney pokes through looks to be that one of those rooms was an addition so there’s a possibility that that chimney did have a fireplace at some point. That also looks like there’s old tin roofing under that corrugated roof. Great video like usual! I hope that land stays out of the mine’s hands.
Same. It has stood there for so long, it would be a shame to see it all go. In the beginning near the end of the cemetery sequence when Glenn was flying the drone towards the mine, you can see some bits of remaining concrete and leveled off areas. That's where the powerhouse and mill used to be some years back. Vulture City managed to move the big engine but it was still a sad loss to us.
Lol! I've actually brought hand pruning shears to help battle pinstripes ironically for the Vulture mine trail from Morristown to Wickenburg but it got to be too much in some areas so i gave up 😅now i have pinstripes on my truck that was new at the time
😂😂 I guess we're not the only ones thinking about doing that! Shame about the pinstripes, though it seems inevitable at some point. But a new truck? Ouch.

The porches on the second building, back in the day before air conditioning and evap coolers, people would sleep out on the porch and hang wet sheets at night to sleep, some were screened in, there would be transoms above the doors and windows to allow cross ventilation, the brick chimney is set up for a cast iron stove, there is a farmhouse restored in saguaro ranch park in glendale that has all these features features
@CactusAtlas yeh, keep finding those old structures while you can. As an arizona native there was a lot more to see out there before, more an more dissappear at faster rate, I remember when fort misery and oro Belle mine still had standing buildings and crushers with the artifacts. (1970s-1980s) I appreciate your historical documentation of what is left, thank you
That last building could have been either an assay office or a bakery. There was something that went under that chimney. A assay furnace would explain. You also pointed out the concrete floor section. To this day, they make a special floor within a floor to place their scales on. When your weighing milligrams ( 1 milligram = 1 oz. Per ton) you don't want a vibration to give you a false weight. And you or rather, i, do not want to be waiting around for the scale to settle down. I could do 20-30 assays an hour. No time. Geologists, mine foremen, owners, mill superintendent want their answers "yesterday ".😂😊
wood stoves, probably franklin types , pot belly ones ya know, would be correct as they often shared chimneys when they used them [ early 1900's ] is closer to timeline for most of those materials that they updated and electric was last updates. for sure add-ons over time.
I’m not an expert but I’m old. I would guess this first school is 1920 to 1950’s based on the construction. The electrical, metal roof and concrete structures in the outhouse. Also since it looks like some sort of dry wall and not ship lap in either building tells me these are around 1920 to 1950’s
Dang, I hate to blow up your dramatic story but there is nothing "lost" about this schoolhouse. It's a little hidden, but pretty much everyone who visits Vulture City walks over to it from the parking lot.
Yup. We showed the position in the video (the old moved powerhouse, etc). But I wouldn't advise driving that road as it does not connect. There is an estimated 2 foot ditch and mound of removed dirt spanning about where the property line is which is not passable.
@@CactusAtlas sorry, I didn't watch the entire video after I realized the buildings you were discussing. You give a good explanation later in the video of where this is located and why you took the "long route". I would recommend people stop at Vulture City if they are in the Wickenburg area. It is an amazing example of an old west mining operation and settlement.
Totally cool. 👍 To be truthful, there's an even easier way to get to the buildings without crossing private property where the new mining operation is. We were mostly just hoping to find some other stuff on that backside. We saw an adit, but again... not on BLM. 😐 Agree about Vulture City though. It's been super cool to see if change over the years.
I wish you hadn't posted this. How long will it be before it's destroyed by idiots? I found it by accident and treated it with respect, as you did, but others do not. BLM is working with Vulture City to restore these buildings, but I don't know a timetable. I hope they do not rebuild, only do arrested decay measures like Bodie or Casa Grande.
We hope they do too and they don’t overdue it. We are sorry you feel this way, but we understand the sentiment. One of the reasons we do is places like that are one cigarette butt away from burning down, which being near to the paved road who knows. In my travels, it’s the fires that do these in the most. We documented it for the public and for the ages in its original placement. Our hope is there are more good people than bad out there. If it is any small consolation, our demographic is 65+, followed by 55 +, etc…. And virtually no viewers below 30. Mostly people who have gone beyond their prankster days. And out of those, the percentage who actually watch all the way is small. So in actuality, you probably have a few hundred who will ever know and who took the time to figure it out. But yes, there might always be one bad apple in the bunch. But all in all, your sentiment is something we feel too and think about. Luckily the barrier to entry is high for some of these places and inaccessible for most. My biggest worry as I gain more experience is urban sprawl and paved roads, which are encroaching on a lot of places northwest of Phoenix near lake pleasant. Thanks for sharing your concern.
I'm not trying to slam you. I know you respect things as do I. I just hope these buildings get to survive in their natural state, or in arrested decay. I enjoyed this video as I do all of them. It's just that I care very much about the environment and our history. @@CactusAtlas
