A lot of people, both professional politicos and regular people told him to wait for post Trump. Win or lose, Trump was going to be a political wrecking ball in 2024. If anything I think all this election cycle has done is set-up Vivek for 2028. Haley exposed herself (even more) as a neo-con, Christie has made permanent enemies of Trump voters (never will win a presidential primary due to that), and DeSantis has definitely hurt his standing with Trump voters while also having some of the worst debate performances until this recent one. Vivek on the other hand is the most likely successor to Trump's voterbase, and unlike other candidates doesn't need to rely on special interest. When 2028 roles around I wouldn't be shocked to see Trump endorse Vivek, unless someone new comes along or proves themselves during Trump's presidency.

He awkwardly bided his time as long as possible despite clearly telegraphing he intended to run, because he knew that to run against Trump was suicidal, but Trump hadn't formally committed one way or the other, yet. But eventually his backers told him to put up or shut up if he wanted the backing of the establishment in the primary (against Trump), and it would be either him or some other pawn (like Haley). So Ron made his move toward the establshment, and in so doing barred himself from acting as the New and Improved Trump Sequel (TM) that got him noticed in the first place. Then Trump announced his run, Ron's campaign was immediately doomed, and as expected from such treacherous vermin the RNC establishment types immediately toss their martyr in the trash heap for the next willing victim, after he lost his utility in defeating Trump for them. In 2016, the wilingness of these people to abandon their golden boys one after another is what truly revealed how unserious they were about defeating Hillary, and how dogged they were in opposing the will of their electorate. Sure, it was largely due to entrenched DNC fraud operations in Miami Dade that his initial election as governor was so close...but it was also due to his RINO predecessor passing huge volumes of gun control and other such betrayals of conservative voters...and Ron failing to sufficiently differentiate himself from that legacy due to having strong party establishment support. It demoralized the base badly.
