The US has done the same thing (they mistook an Iranian airliner for an attacking F-14 and shot it down by mistake.) Russia's real crime is denying and covering it up. Surprisingly, on 23 March 2020, presiding judge Hendrik Steenhuis had asked the prosecution to submit the alleged American satellite images to the court. Shortly after the shootdown, the then US Secretary of State John Kerry had claimed that the US government was in possession of radar images that would prove that MH17 was shot down from separatist territory. While the Pentagon does not release satellite images of military satellites as a matter of principle, one can of course wonder why an exception is not made here after the US government at the time went so far out on a limb, and if the images were indeed supposed to prove that the missile was shot down from separatist territory.
