Take into consideration that this doc is presenting only one sect of Buddhism. Mahayana Buddhism has many more followers. That is not to say Theravada is wrong just different approach. Right now there appears to be quite a bit of conflict in and around Theravada Buddhism and I do not know why. It may be that it has become too involved in politics which does not end well.

Theravada is the original tradition who follows and study the Canon Pali, the original teachings of the Buddha. Mahayana and Vajrayana spreads mixed teachings, they appeared centuries after the death of the Buddha because some monks decided not to follow the Vinaya code instituted by the Buddha. By the way, Theravada tradition has within itself several traditions. My personal point of view is that everyone can follow the tradition which they identify themselves; at the beginning I srarted in Mahayana tradition but some years later I met Theravada tradition and I feel deeply connected with it. May you be well and happy!

Yes, as Javier says below, this series is precious. Eyre picks outstanding guides, and asks earnest and daringly simple, home run questions. And the visual statements - an example is ending 'Footprint' with walking meditation. Sweet! - are profound teachings in their own right. Avatar00zero, it's a mitzva you've performed by disseminating this. -- Wonkabo, I think the sermon is: Try to take life in, as you go through it, not completely engulfed by the feverish pursuit of things you never really chose. And if you deliberately choose, for example, to focus on how walking just feels, you'll be benefitted in a way that taking or viewing pictures of your vacation just can't touch.

At 35.00, the old lady's explanation was not accurately translated by Dr Ratnapala. She said the main reason for being born in to a non-Buddhist religion is believing in superstition. She also said that if a non-Buddhist let go of the superstitious beliefs and come to the right view, he or she can be reborn as a Buddhist.
@gayansamarasekara
@gayansamarasekara 8 лет назад
No. Dr. Ratnapala perfectly translated it. You are possibly attempting to be nice to any British Christians watching this. She clearly said he had done something wrong in a past life, she emphasized it. She never said the "main reason" is believing in superstition, the main reason, as affirmed by her facial response, was committing sins in past lives, additionally, she vaguely said following "mythical" beliefs could cause a person to be born in a non-Buddhist place. Mythical is different from superstition (as mythical belief, according to Buddhism, includes atheists who deny reincarnation as well). Regarding next life as Buddhist, what she said was only that, if you try really hard, you will never be born as a mythological person. However she was apparently confused by the unexpected question, and nobody should take her quick response as an educated Buddhist response to the question. The Buddhists generally think that you get a birth at a rich country, rich family, only if you have collected rewards in a past life (ex. donating some of your possessions to the clergy and needy people). You have to have more rewards than that to be born in a place where Buddhism is preached. Doing good (that helps purifying the mind) will ultimately help a person to become a Buddhist.

Can anyone tell me what his walking sermon means?
@egilkarlow
@egilkarlow 9 лет назад
wonkabo That is I would say walking meditation. I guess that he sits for a while focusing on his breathing. Then he walks very slowly with the mind focused on how the feet moves an touches the ground, then he returns to do more sitting meditation. Its good to stretch your legs now and then but it does not mean that you have to stop meditating.

Sushant Raut Nepal was part of India 2500 years ago
@harrymcnicholas9468
@harrymcnicholas9468 6 лет назад
That is not true. There was no united India at that time and Nepal was never part of India. There were many small kingdoms that made up Nepal and India. Nepal did not become a country until the 17th century. It appears that India was first mostly united under King Ashoka but not all of India. India has been united and broken up a number of times.
