WHOOPSY DAISY - Did an immediate re-upload cause somehow I missed a glaring typo. Anyway, whaddyagonna do? I took a short 40k break because I just re-read this book and really wanted to do a scene from it. Don't worry Helsreach 11 is coming!
Richard Boylan Dude, keep up the amazing work. Create a patreon! I cant find an easy way to give you my money, and I still cant make netflix and GW hire you for some reason.
Richard Boylan Great video as always and even though I love you W40k series and can hardly wait for the next, this video stands on it’s own and I find the idea of reading this intriguing.
You could make a patreon for other projects than W40k content, so that GW cannot have a single complaint about you receiving support for creating warhammer stuff.
@@TheGourdKing Olson's death will be a surprise and disgust for a lot of people. They don't walk towards the Prize but to death. Death is cleverly concealed as the Prize, and you know how the saying goes "When you're young and dumb" they soon learn it.
it's a shame this book was never made into a full movie unlike other King's books though looking at the Running Man with AHNOLD, maybe it's for the best
I agree, I have always said that film should be binned forever and erased from every facet of life. Every other original film adaptation has been spot on but The Running Man is the blot on the landscape. If I had the money, I would definitely fund a proper shoot of that film.
Them looking old is a stylistic choice for 3 reasons. 1) It shows how the long walk wears you down 2) RU-vid is very strict when it comes to violence against children 3) It looks grittier and thus fits the book better with them being older
@@hatter7824 Youngest is 13. Here's the excerpt. "most of the kids in the country over twelve take the tests but only one in fifty passes." Oldest is 18. Here is the excerpt. "Why don’t you just get up off your fat ass and go to it with us? But the milkman was past eighteen." Most main characters are 16-18, but Percy was 13. “He was awful young to be on this hike,” Baker said sadly. “If he was fourteen, I’ll smile ’n’ kiss a pig.” I imagine the younger boys ages 13-15 formed other groups.
Eric Johnson my fave book ever! Read it many times! They are finally going to make the film! Yay! I have constantly barraged Mr King and others to make it into a film!
@@janoycresva276 I can see why you're making that comparison, but I think the differences in character dynamics and connection would make The Long Walk a unique movie in it's own right.
@@jayebrady11 Oh I totally agree, but from a business as well as audience perspective, it wouldn’t be made because when you look at it, The Hunger Games is essentially Stephen King’s The Long Walk with aspects of The Running Man thrown in & told from a female’s perspective. The lore is very different but the basic elements & stories are the same. Set in a dystopian America ruled by a militaristic dictatorship led by a main ominous figure where every year, a deadly televised game takes place involving teenagers competing to the point to where only one survives. Though Katniss Everdeen’s personal story is closer to Ben Richards than Ray Garraty in terms of family as well as the future rebellion in the series. And because of that, people would think “oh I saw this already” & the business executives of movie studios would say “we’ve done this already” & especially when we look at something like the failure of Iron Fist, the reason “but not with this specific property or story we haven’t” isn’t a good enough reason to adapt something whose elements have already been done well elsewhere. And The Hunger Games movies were very successful not to mention very faithful to the source material whereas almost all Stephen King adapted stories have largely been either been failures or so unfaithful to the source material that they may as well be different stories altogether just conveniently using the same name.
This is amazing. Thank you very much for this. I feel like a personal wish has been granted here, I've been wanting so see something, anything accurate from the Bachman books portrayed on film and you just gave it to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you decide to make a full version of any of those stories, I will help fund it with what little I can afford to donate.
I read this book back in 94. Written under Kings pseudonym ‘Bachman’. One of my all time favorite stories. I still think about it from time to time. Thanks for what you do!
What about Stebbins making SURE he stepped OVER the first body... Without looking down... Slipping a little in the blood. He wanted to send a message... Stepping straight over curly like that... It's why Ray did the same and after Stebbins messes with him he does the same... There's a lot of little psychological battles going on in that book... Between Ray and Stebbins particularly. Very little things they do to try and fuck with each other... I never saw them until about the 15th read haha... King really knocked it out the park with this one.
@@damaged.collateral I would highly recommend reading the story; it’s incredible! I’ve loved it for years since I discovered it! The skeletons are the walkers as they are nearing death. In the story, all 100 contestants are required to walk at a speed of at least 4 miles/hour. There is no resting; everyone keeps going until one person is left, with the prize being whatever the walker wanted. Whenever any walker falls beneath that speed for 30 seconds, he gets a warning. (One can get warnings for other things.) A contestant is shot and killed on the 4th warning - however, if a contestant can go a whole hour with no warnings, he gets one warning removed. For instance, a contestant must walk for 3 hours with no warnings to get all 3 warnings removed! Hope this helps - and I hope you’ll get a chance to read it! 😊
@@dawnwelch6579 thank you so much for explaining ! i thought that might be it but wasn’t sure ! i had just started the long walk at the time of writing that two weeks ago and im nearly done , and all i can say is Wow .. it truly is an unforgettable book and haunting in ways i hadn’t expected . i cant help but feel so dearly for all the characters .
Context to people who've never read "The Long Walk" by Richard Bachmann ("Stephen King"): The Long Walk is essentially a giant competition where kids walk across the east coast until only one of them is left. If you go slower than a certain speed, you get 3 warning, then on the 4th you're killed. The world places enormous bets on this event like any sport, thus justifying it. I believe the winner gets whatever he wants. He's pretty much taken care of. Surprisingly good book.
AWESOME!!! My favorite story ever... I've read it 68 times. I've read it 11 times in a row once lol. It's THAT good. The psychology of the characters... Particularly Ray, McVries, Olson, Scram and Stebbins.... Ohhhhh Stebbins. Stebbins and Ray is kinda like if you could take someone like Kobe and Jordan in their primes against each other. The relationship between those two from the start was intense. When garraty feels like running on his hands in circles after the watermelon.... Until he looked back at Stebbins... And his joy diminished. Stebbins in back, no melon, no smile, just walking.... Damn.... Great job on video. Loved the way it showed the effects... I like that.
@@davidwulatin3321 I was laughing so hard in that scene. I love mcvries. This is my favorite book EVER Hey Hank* tho Lol sorry I literally know this book by heart
"The Long Walk is by American writer Stephen King, published in 1979, under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. It was collected in 1985 in the hardcover omnibus The Bachman Books, and has seen several reprints since, as both paperback and hardback. Set in a dystopian America circa 1980, the novel follows an alternate history in which Germany appears to have won World War II. The plot revolves around the contestants of a grueling *walking contest*, held annually by a totalitarian version of the United States of America. One hundred teenage boys participate in an annual walking contest called "The Long Walk" or just "The Walk". Each contestant, called a "Walker", must maintain a speed of at least four miles per hour; if he drops below that speed for 30 seconds, he receives a verbal warning. A Walker who slows down again after receiving three warnings is "ticketed". The meaning of this action is intentionally kept vague at first, but it soon becomes clear that "buying a ticket" means to be shot dead by soldiers riding in half-tracks along the roadside. Walkers may be shot immediately for certain serious violations, such as trying to leave the road or attacking the half-track, and are given warnings for minor violations such as interfering with one another. The soldiers use electronic equipment to precisely determine a Walker's speed. A Walker clears one warning for every hour that he stays above the minimum speed."
I read this short story. Right now I'm reading Skeleton Crew. Just finishing up the 1st story "The Mist". I'm a huge fan of Steve King. I just ordered The Shining cause I want to read it again. I have a lot of nightmares that don't scare me but could be great horror stories.
The long walk is my favorite short story from King (welp Bachman but technically King, sooo ~). You did an amazing job here - it really captures the feeling. No colors used except white, black, grey and later red. It created the right atmosphere. Also the face and later the body turning to a skeleton? Amazing symbolism right here. And no annoying music - just heavy footsteps, the sound of the engine, tires and voices (except for the suspense right before the shot were music fit perfectly). It all fits very well and captures the essence of "The long walk" perfectly. You're crazy talented! * subs *
I've come across this old video by chance. It's amazing! It's given me the same emotions that the novel gave. How beautiful would be if you could create other scenes from the book - maybe the finale with that heartbreaking Garraty-McVries moment...
I really wish they would make a movie of this. I know just a bunch of guys walking and talking seems like it would be a boring film, but if you stayed true to the dialogue, character development, and drama King put on the page, it could be amazing.
I believe in the coming movie adaptation Arnold S is going to be the main character and he ends up commandeering the escort vehicle and bringing down the evil government one crony at a time while using phrases like "take it in stride" and "don't step on me". Can't wait.
As i think it looks amazing, i think full movie about it would be hard to make. Lots of fragments was in main character head, he was thinking a lot, its hard to put this on screen.
I'm reading the book for the 2nd time, it's an amazing story centered around Ray Garrett and this dystopia world where 100 boys partake in the Long Walk. They have to keep a pace of 4 miles per hour, military 1/2 tracks follow on either side of the road and each walker gets 3 warnings if they slow or stop. The last walker left gets anything they want for the rest of their lives but the mental cost of achieving that is unbearable. I pray that they make a movie out of this amazing story.
Hunger games and The Squid has some likeness to the same dilemmas Ray and the other teenagers experiense; they want to support each other and become friends but only one of them can survive, so how do we react to this as human beings? Its insane!
What I love about this novella is the fact that really the interesting question is, why anyone would participate in what, except for one, basically a suicide. And no, it's not because of the prize. Amazing story and I've been hoping that someone some day will adapt it to a movie, because the story is so good.
This is beautiful and so so horrifying, it’s so satisfying to see this scene so well brought to screen. The part of this that gets me most is the shot of him on the ground after getting his head blown off silently laying there while the sounds of footsteps just continue onward all around his corpse.
With this book belong developed into a movie I have a feeling your video will get a lot more views on the next year or so. This is amazing. I loved the book and your short film is exactly how I pictured it while reading the book.
This is breathtaking. I just randomly read this book (in like two days) and came looking for some reviews. What a piece of art! Bravo amazing work for an amazing book.
Short synopsis: A competition between teens in the US (possibly if Germany won WW2) where they have to keep walking at a minimum speed of 4mph. If they slow down (or break an of the other rules - no negatively interferring with the others, no attacking the soldiers, no trying to quit/escape etc.) they get a warning, which decay at a rate of 1 per hour. After 3 warning, it's bye bye. Last man standing gets a wish granted (most winners die from the physical and mental exhaustion shortly after). Not a very happy novel.
The thing about this premise is that it obviously isn't fair because it's just a Mr. Beast challenge- Last to stop walking wins. It's easy for anyone to see keeping your hand on a car or walking indefinitely is the easiest thing in the world. Yeah, you'll eventually have to sleep but so will everyone else. All you have to do is last a little bit longer than them. They won't last forever. Surely. But that's what everyone is thinking to themselves.
"99 now, Garraty thought sickly.... 99 bottles of beer left on the wall..... and if one of those bottles should happen to fall..... oh Jesus... oh Jesus....."
Theres a contest in Sweden called Fotrally and the Walk of Pain, inspired by this book people are forced to walk between two cars both going 5 kilometers per hour, passing the one in the beggining or falling behind the one at the end you get a ticket, and have 30 seconds to back off or hurry up. The longest walk took place for 72 hours.
Nice job but the walkers should have been teens not grown men. Although maybe it is better this way watching kids get their tickets might be too intense.
I wouldn't say this is King's best work, but it is right up there in the top 5. A brilliant novel by a young and budding genius. One of those stories that stick with you 20-30 years after first reading it.
This has always been one of my favorite King/Bachman stories. Along with Road Work. His stories are awesome. Been wanting to see this one moved from imagination to silver screen for a long time. I hope it does not get screwed up in the process. I'll say that clip was rather good though.
Hey Richard! First of all - i haven't had such strong goosebumps and heartbeat in at least 5 years. Astonishing work and portrayal. If there is a way i would like to speak privately ( e-mail, chat, whatever) i have an idea with maybe future applications. And i think that working together we may actually achieve something. Just hear me out for couple of minutes. That's all. Cheers. All the best.
It is one of my favorite books, it caused me a great impact and I read it twice, and it became reality, the situation that currently lives, Venezuela, the South American nation, with a socialist president, murderer, miserable and genocidal, is very similar to the characters of the novel, from the fiction to the most cruel reality!.
Why they never made this book a full feature movie is beyond me. One of King's (Bachman's) best stories. Plus, the story makes for an extremely affordable film with low budget. Chances it would net huge profits is inevitable. Great short! Get some money together and make the entire film in this style. You'll make a million bucks.
It actually sounds like a nightmare to film. Background consistency seems the biggest problem. Plus the actors would be constantly out of breath. Usually in movies one scene takes dozens of takes. That means actors would spend all day walking, crew as well. Sounds like a practical and health nightmare. It would be easier as an animated movie.
It may have something to do with the very depressing message of this story and all of the 4 Bachmann novellas really, King wrote it I think not so long after his mother died, which is basically what the last story is about.
Amazing work. Just revisited this book after reading it when I was 11 or 12 in 1985. Surprised this hasn’t been made into a feature film. Regardless, just stopped by to let you know what a great job you did.
Awesome book. I read it myself a few years ago. You created an awesome animation. The look is great. Maybe a little bit too much shaping between Ray and the skelleton. But hell it comes great if it's suttle, between cuts or in the ending. All in all I like the vintage design, it gives a very fitting feeling.
I'm reading the book for the first time, and have gotten past this scene. *SPOILER WARNING* The kid who dies in this video is named Curly and he is the first out the 100 boys who participate in the long walk to die.
