This is the LONGEST ABANDONED Train Bridge that I ever crossed!
Hey everyone, in this video myself, RJ & Jake venture out to locate and cross an abandoned train bridge. Once arriving at the location, it wasn't what I expected. Although the rails are gone, the bridge has a solid floor which made crossing a bit easier. On our way across we discovered signs of another bridge and were hit with some strong winds. Once across, we discovered that there is even more to this location and research will explain what we found. So come along with us as we cross and explore the Longest Abandoned Train Bridge that we ever found. Enjoy

I did notice that the Stop Sign reads; "Private Crossing". Could it be that the land on the other side of the tracks which is private uses that bridge as a way of travel to and from somewhere?? Why else would an old trestle have a concrete floor?? Only reason would be for small trucks or atv vehicles to travel on?

That is an absolutely amazing find! The existing bridge is impressive in its own right, then finding the remnants of the other concrete arch bridge was a nice bonus. I appreciate the old photos you were able to find and share too. My wish for that bridge would be that they convert it to a rail trail that we can bike across.
@brandonlepley3793

That paved piece is for highrail vehicles to put on and set off the tracks. The active line was the former Pennsylvania Railroad Wilkes-Barre Branch and the abandoned right of way is the Reading Catawissa Branch. There were two diamonds where the lines crossed. The diamond at the bridge was called NORCA (North Catawissa). There was another diamond just south of town along Catawissa Creek where the Reading Main crossed the Pennsylvania Railroad Rock Glen Branch to Tomhicken called RedPen (Reading Pennsylvania). The active line is now the Norfolk Southern Sunbury Line and is dark territory for most of the southern portion so trains move with written track authorities from the dispatcher because there are no signals to govern movement. Even today the name NORCA has been used on the track authorities as a copying location.

Great vid, thanks for posting! I walked this bridge once myself way back in the 80's. Old RDG Catawissa Branch. Tower or Shack on the PRR/PC/D&H side was called Norca, (North Catawissa). Erie Lackawanna side was Rupert Yard, small but important interchange point for RDG RR until 1976.

I never watch a video over 15:00 long but I watched this start to finish. What a wonderful find. It breaks my heart to see such magnificent structures abandoned and never be used again for the purpose of what they were built for. I am an abandoned railroad junkie and every time I drive next to an old narrow gauge line and see all the hard work of shoveling massive hills out and filling deep ravines by hand in the 1800’s/early 1900’s and that work Is being reclaimed and taken over by nature to be almost unrecognizable any more. Same thing with all of the hard work put into these bridges. Especially the concrete bridge of 1911. Such hard backbreaking work that most people cant even begin to appreciate today.

I was just wondering where this bridge actually is...I grew up a mile from the Ohio River south of Pittsuburgh, Pa, rail bridges every few miles very familiar with freight trains including the HUGE articulated steam engines hauling 100 hopper cars full of coal...and steel on flat cars out of the local steel mill...my "vacations" were in Cresaps W. Va where these was a rail bridge over a creek (fish Creek) and the Ohio River...in days of yore...had always enjoyed those days...watching trains, riding on them (an uncle was an engineer on the old B & O railroad...) watching them dump red hot "slag hoppers" from the local steel mill...

New bridge line built parallel to the original and its pilings filled in place. Common railroad bridge construction method. No reason to remove the concrete arches so they were left behind. Creates really neat artifacts, but not flooding related, just normal build and fill techniques.

From my perspective watching this video and the floor your walking on, I would assume at one point or perhaps even still, that they want to make this a bike/walking trail? That gravel was put there on purpose by somebody? Very cool video thanks for sharing

It's used regularly by atv riders, locals walking and was even part of a race (running) for many years. Would be great to see it re purposed.

This was so awesome! The massive bridge was really a cool find then finding the old arched one, wow! Loved the drone footage with the clouds reflecting off the water. Aren't you glad this bridge had a solid bottom instead of like that other big one you faced your fears on? lol

This is truly a great bridge, we had one going across the Ottawa River here in Canada, That only has small sections left and most of the floor is gone. Not a good idea to go one this bridge but the one you are walking on seems to be in great condition for its age. What is the name of the river its very wide and it has a very strong current too, Just like our Ottawa River. Stay safe its not worth risking your life for a good shot or a great one that current will take you down river faster than you can swim to the banks and safer ground. Be careful guys.

Great video JP, if you're looking for a abandoned railroad line to walk and shoot video, come up to Susquehanna / Lanesboro Pennsylvania, for the D&H rail trail which runs from Forest City Pa. To the N.Y. state line, abandoned in the mid 80's and the rails removed in 88-90, some of the bridges are still usable (paved over), some have been removed, if I remember correctly, it is a 38 mile stretch and is open Year round to the public, it also had a Jefferson junction at Lanesboro up to the old Erie (Erie Lackawanna) railroad which is now the"NYS&W" ( New York, Susquehanna & Western) railroad and you can also walk across the Starrucca viaduct where the NYS&W still runs 2 trains a day, the viaduct is over 1,000 feet long and over a 100 feet high and used to have 2 sets of rails crossing it, it is one of Pennsylvania's oldest stone bridges still in use, built in 1848/49 for the Erie railroad, come on up when you get a chance, the video you shoot will be off the charts, hope to see you soon

@@MarkTheLostTraveler It is best to walk to this location. There are a lot of cool abandoned railroad related things to see in this area. Several tunnels that you can ride your bike through.
