From September 8, 1941 to January 20, 1944, the city of Leningrad was besieged by the German army for almost 900 days, in one of the longest sieges in history. In World War II, the city of Leningrad was one of the main targets of the German invasion of the Soviet Union through Operation Barbarossa. It was there that the most important base of the Soviet Baltic Naval Fleet was located, as well as a large industry in the production of armaments.
The conquest of Leningrad was not just an operational request from the German high command, Adolf Hitler also saw the symbolic significance of Leningrad. Conquering the city would be a huge blow to Soviet morale, as the place was named after the leader of the Russian revolution. Furthermore, Hitler wanted the city razed and its population killed or expelled to the east as part of his plan for the occupied territories in Russia. However, Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, also realized the importance of Leningrad, both strategically and symbolically and would not allow the city to fall into German hands.
