CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The British land on Sword Beach with Private Flanagan (Sean Connery) at the front and Captain Maud (Kenneth More)
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Longest Day is a mammoth, all-star re-creation of the D-Day invasion, personally orchestrated by Darryl F. Zanuck. Whenever possible, the original locations were utilized, and an all-star international cast impersonates the people involved, from high-ranking officials to ordinary GIs. Each actor speaks in his or her native language with subtitles translating for the benefit of the audience (alternate "takes" were made of each scene with the foreign actors speaking English, but these were seen only during the first network telecast of the film in 1972). The stars are listed alphabetically, with the exception of John Wayne, who as Lt. Colonel Vandervoort gets separate billing. Others in the huge cast include Eddie Albert, Jean-Louis Barrault, Richard Burton, Red Buttons, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Gert Frobe, Curt Jurgens, Peter Lawford, Robert Mitchum, Kenneth More, Edmond O'Brien, Robert Ryan, Jean Servais, Rod Steiger and Robert Wagner. Paul Anka, who wrote the film's title song, shows up as an Army private. Scenes include the Allies parachuting into Ste. Mere Englise, where the paratroopers were mowed down by German bullets; a real-life sequence wherein the German and Allied troops unwittingly march side by side in the dark of night; and a spectacular three-minute overhead shot of the troops fighting and dying in the streets of Quistreham. The last major black-and-white road-show attraction, The Longest Day made millions, enough to recoup some of the cost of 20th Century Fox's concurrently produced Cleopatra.

This might have looked easy to some people who claim Omaha beach was worse, but i don't think any one realises how tough it was in the following battles in land where the British ran into 8 Panzer divisions and 3 Tiger Battalions stationed around Caen.

Juno & Omaha were the worst beaches. There was a fortified village just next to the Canadian landing areas and their casualty reports show it. I visited the place last September. Also Point Du Hoc was an extremely imposing sight to see in real life. Must've been absolute hell.

That piper briefly seen was meant to represent Bill Millin, ordered to play by his commander the Lord Lovat. He subsequently played walking up and down the beach as the British troops came ashore - under fire. The Germans thought he was mad and did not shoot him. Piper Millin subsequently piped the charge across Pegasus Bridge, as 11 of his comrades were killed around him. He lived until 2010.

The real Colin Maud actually loaned Kenneth More the real shillelagh he carried on DDay to use in the movie, and Maud did actually have his dog with him on the beach, only his real dog was a German Shepherd. Since a German officer was shown to already have a German Shepherd dog in the movie, Maud's dog was changed to a stereotypical English Bulldog to keep audiences from being confused.

Gotta love Lord Lovat's sense of style- going into combat in a seater and a beret. The sweater had to get hot after awhile. At least he is carrying a standard issue rifle (SMLE)- good leadership there. Probably didn't want to mark himself as a high-ranking officer (i.e. a sniper magnet) by only carrying a pistol- although i suspect the sweater and beret would do just that

It's a story we keep telling ourselves over and over and over till we forget it's a lie. These men all died in vain. The truth that millions of lives got wasted for nothing is something we just can't cope. British, Americans, French, Germans, Italians, Japanese and Russians all fought for the same thing and were all equally brave and to be pitied.

It was like that with most of them Omaha was the exception because the bombs missed there targets
@walterfielding9079
@walterfielding9079 2 года назад
Sword, Gold, and Utah were by far quiet easy beaches to capture for a number of reasons. First, the air raids before the landings hit their targets on and near those beaches and the Naval bombardment was more successful at Sword, Gold, and Juno than at Omaha and Utah. Second the Germans only had light resistance on those beaches because the Allies had convinced the Germans there was going to be an American landing at Calais and a British landing in Norway. Third, Rommel knew that defending the beaches of Eastern Normandy (Where Sword, Gold, and Juno were) was difficult without high terrain, thus he had most of the defenses built further inland at more favorable ground. At Utah the defenses were light because the Germans figured nobody would land and try to climb cliffs, the Americans proved them wrong. Omaha was the only stretch of beach on the Normandy coastline that was in a situation for the Germans to stop an invasion on the beach with favorable defensive ground. Omaha however couldn't be ignored or bypassed, the Allies needed a continuous front and thus Omaha needed to be captured to better prepare for a counterattack. The British and Canadians would later suffer Omaha like conditions further inland when the infantry had to fight SS Panzer divisions further south. Juno Beach for the Canadians was easier than Omaha but harder than Utah, Gold and Sword. The Canadians had to land in a town and immediately take on street fighting. The Canadians also landed later in the morning so the German defenders were alert. The shoreline of Juno was muddy as well and quicksand prevented heavy equipment from getting through and men had to make their way through the slog while under gunfire. However the situation at Juno was much better than at Omaha.

Don't know about the British, but in theory US beachmasters outranked even 4 star generals until the beachhead was declared secure.

Tradition pal, that's clearly a highland regiment so they get serenaded into battle with bagpipes.

Optimistic Whovian even better story than that. Bagpipes were banned on the front line but Lovett was Scottish nobility and ignored it.According to reports the Germans didn’t shoot him because they thought he was insane
