One thing about 95: it actually doesn't hit Boston. It was originally designed to, but highway revolts stopped it. Instead it's diverted into a ring road around the city, running concurrently with 128. The corridor that was already cleared for it in the southwest was turned into a rail corridor, and now serves the Orange Line, commuter rail, and Amtrak.
Interstate 287 was supposed to be extended to Long Island via the Long Island Sound bridge, but protests and environmental concerns caused the proposal to be canceled. This is why NY 135 connects with only Interstate 495. NY 135 should be rebranded as Interstate 995 or be demolished entirely.
You can go into Downtown Boston by switch from I-95 to I-93, that for this piece is EAST of I-95 "breaking" the normal numbering rule, which then crosses I-95 (putting it to its proper west) and then going on north to the interior of New Hampshire.
Need a correction. Eastern portion of I-94 doesn't end in Detroit, Michigan but continues north-eastward to Port Huron, Michigan. You'll need to add another 63 miles to I-94s total.
Interstate 10 in Texas is 887 miles. Mile marker 887 is the highest numbered mile marker on the Interstate Highway system. When entering Texas from New Mexico, the first mileage sign is El Paso 18, Beaumont 860 😎
@@Vincent-ke5zn even north to south is amazingly long. I often make the drive to denver Colorado and back from south texas and like 80 percent of the trip is just getting out of Texas. From my my house to the moment I finally cross out the state line is an 11 hour drive, and that's if I don't hit traffic on i35
476 is very important to the Philly metro area it makes it incredibly easy to get from Delco (Delaware County) up to Northeast PA. I live in South Jersey and frequently use the blue route which is the southern section of 476.
@B Sm I live in Montgomery County and usually take the Commodore Barry when we go to Ocean City. Easier than going through the neverending construction around Allegheny Ave on I-95 and then fighting traffic on the Walt Whitman
As someone who’s lived right off the 10 in So. Cal for his entire life I never knew it went straight to Jacksonville. That sounds like a fun road trip.
Interesting bit of Trivia: Interstate 90 begins at T-Mobile Park in Seattle (home of the Mariners) and ends near Fenway Park (home of the Red Sox). Fenway Park is on I-90, just before I-90 ducks into the Big Dig. Along the way, it passes Comiskey Park in Chicago (home of the White Sox) and Progressive Field in Cleveland, home of the...Guardians.
@@rurexdane5089 just as the home stadium for the Mariners is still "The Safe" (a nickname for Safeco Field) in the minds and hearts of Seattle fans...who cares about corporate naming rights? 😅
@@brentboswell1294 as far as I know Yankee Stadium, Fenway park, Wrigley Field, Dodger Stadium, and Oriole Park at Camden Yards are the last original names in the MLB. Lambeau field and Soldier field are the last original stadium names in the NFL. Everyone else sold out to corporate greed.
Multiple signed routes might be an interesting video topic. Like in Idaho there is a stretch where I-84/US 20-26-30 and ID-51 all share the same stretch of road for several miles.
Excellent video! I didn't read all the comments so not sure it was mentioned but the story of I-95's missing link around Philly is a fascinating one. The whole story could fill a book but interstate highway geeks like some of your viewers and me likely know the basics. I lived there for 36 years and, until just 4 years ago I-95 did not go all the way from Maine to Florida. Because NJ chose not to build their portion of 95, it was rerouted onto the northern portion of the NJ Tpke, leaving a gap between PA and NJ around Trenton. When the connection from 95 to the PA Tpke was finally (albeit partially) completed in 2018 (which wasn't originally built because of the Interstate's original prohibition on connecting a free road with a toll road), I-95 was finally continuous up and down the East Coast.
It still amazes me how long I-90 is. Washingtonian born and raised and I’ve driving from Seattle to Bozeman. But I went to Chicago once and went on I-90 from O’Hare to downtown and it was weird knowing that that’s I-90 and I can drive that one road back to Seattle. And eventually I can drive it to the cut off to get to my hometown in eastern Washington
Great video! I did for a moment wonder why you didn't talk about Interstate 5 on the west coast- but when I Googled its length - It's only 1, 381 miles - so It wouldn't have cracked your top 10. Who knew?
Perhaps I-25 would’ve made the list if it made its way up into Montana. But the only way it would make sense is to be concurrent with I-90 and split off at the I-94 interchange in Billings, becoming a more northwest/southeast alternative corridor to Great Falls. No point in that right now though
The first freeway in Texas, the Gulf Freeway section of I-45 between Houston and Galveston was started in the early 1950's. Construction is still under way!
I was as young as 10 years old when I started getting into highways. At the same time. my Bay Area resident self learned that I-80 goes from SF to (almost) NYC.
Interstate 94 doesn't actually end in Detroit you might be thinking of Interstate 96 (which *does* end in Detroit)... it continues NE for another 45 miles or so to Port Huron, joining up with Interstate 69 just west of the city, before ending at the Blue Water Bridge pair, where they become Ontario Highway 402 after crossing the border... Interstate 40 might be getting longer in the medium- to long-range future because CalTrans has been wanting to extend it west to I-5 at Bakersfield (by upgrading California Highway 58) for a good while now, but there's no official timetable for this, and funds are hard to come by and not allocated..
Growing up in Massachusetts, I’ve always known I-90 as the Mass Pike. When I first found out how long it actually was, it blew my mind! Also 495 in Massachusetts is such an important highway, it connects the North & South Shores without having to go into Boston and is the primary connection between the Cape & the rest of MA. Given the explosive growth in the Boston area, this also serves as the outer boundary of the Greater Boston area.
same here i only realized how long it was on my way to pittsfield and it said “highest place east of montana” or some crap and I was like holy moly i thought this thing ended at the hudson
I never realized the jersey turnpike is just i-95. Alot of interstates are named like that and I never realized it. I-80 is just "the Ohio turnpike" all the way thru Ohio
I-287 serves different purposes along it's route, mostly as a connector between other interstates (I-87, I-80, I-78, I-95). I wouldn't exactly say it bypasses traffic, it still gets really bad during rush hours. Although it's a half-belt, a lot of commuters still use it to get to other roads that go into the city, like I-80.
Better than the Garden State parkway with it's 25cent toll baskets back in the day. Rt 17 used to have a traffic light, only one but it still created a mess.
I-10 in Texas is actually the longest distance an interstate travels in a single state at 880 miles, 500 of which is the dreadful drive between El Paso and San Antonio, which I regard as one of the most boring and enduring drives in the entire country.
I've done I-80 from El Paso to Dan Antonio twice, and am inclined to agree with you. It makes the boring stretches through Arizona seem quick and interesting.
You neglected to mention I-275, located in the greater Cincinnati metropolitan area, as the longest complete beltway in the USA. It is 83 miles in length. Otherwise, good job.
I-196 from Benton Harbor to Grand Rapids is 80.8 miles long making it the longest three digit interstate that starts with an odd number (known as a spur, three digit interstates that start with an even number are known as bypasses)
I-95 is THE most painful part of living in Connecticut 😭 speaking of which, not sure exactly how you could implement this into a video but you should do something about Connecticut highways! We’re one of the last states to use sequential instead of mile-based numbers- I didn’t even realize that wasn’t the norm until I started driving outside the state!
I guess they got to match up with the rest of the world but New Haven to Enfield on 91 is only c. 60 miles and there are 49 exits. Greenwich to Stonington on 95 is c. 111 miles and there 93 exits. (Not sure about 84) Not like you have to worry about being stuck miles from an exit when you need gas/bathroom etc.
Interstate 69 will run from Port Huron to Brownsville and will be joined by two auxiliary routes that will run to Laredo and McAllen named 69W and 69C.
Same here but my stretch is from Orange County to Los Angeles. Sometimes I take it WAY up north when going to visit family in San Jose though. Those trips are fun because you can open up to like 120mph and nobody cares lol
M/C border to C/O border 797 miles. C/O to O/W boarder 308 miles. O/W to W/C border 277 miles. =1381 miles Also I-84 from Portland OR to Echo UT 796 miles.
1:30 476 "the Blue Route" was originally meant to run from I-95 in Chester PA, and for years it terminated with ramps to Chemical Rd in Plymouth Township (Plymouth Meeting) in Montgomery County. Later, 476 was tied into the PA Turnpike via a new interchange labeled the Mid-County Interchange. This replaced the original interchange with the Northeast Extension (PA route 9). So when that opened, the 476 designation was extended all the way up the Northeast Extension of the Turnpike. That's how 476 attained its final length.
I-35 does the same thing in the twin cities as it does in Dallas / Ft.Worth - it splits into an I-35E and an I-35W going through Minneapolis and Saint Paul.. but I guess the geographic spread of the city isn't as big as the southern example..
There are many reasons which work together that made the US the current only superpower, and will likely be unless/until we destroy ourselves. One main reason is the highway system. This is why infrastructure is crucial to the US' continued success!
Amazingly Kansas City is where two of the longest Interstate highway in America cross North-South and East-West. With I-29 and I-49 both ending their border-spanning routes (Pembra, North Dakota to Lafayette, Louisiana respectively) Kansas City is the actual Transportation Heart of Americs.
Nice list. I’ve probably driven 40-50% of all the routes shown in this video despite having never lived in the US. The only one I’ve completely driven from end to end is I-94.
I used to live directly adjacent to the Seattle terminus of I-90. I was always impressed by the fact that I could go visit friends who live in Boston via the road outside my apartment.
Can you do the 10 longest auxiliary (triple digit) interstate highway designated as triple digit interstates. Here are the examples: 1). I-476 for 131 miles between Philadelphia Pennsylvania to Scranton Pennsylvania. 2). I-495 for 120 miles to bypass Boston Massachusetts. 3). Future I-569 for 95 miles (Western Kentucky Parkway) between the junction of I-69 & I-169 near Nortonville to I-65 in Elizabethtown Kentucky.
To expand on your point, back in the era before the Interstate highway was constructed, here in Cin City (Cincinnati, OH) USA you could take U.S. 22 all the way to NYC, while U.S. 50 ran all the way to SF (it now ends in Sacramento where it dead ends into I-80)......
Quick comment on I-94 and I-90: the majority of their routes in Wisconsin is the combined route of I-39, I-94, and I-90 from the northern Merrimac exit, where I-39 joins from Stevens Point, and southern Madison, where I-49 breaks off to Milwaukee.
5:42 I-70 does NOT take the same path you highlighted through the rocky mountains. I see some other comments that also are correcting mistakes, please make sure all the information is right in your video or watch it over before you post. Thank you!
I’ve run the entirety of all of these routes. I90 is my favorite especially between Wyoming and Washington, but 70 through Colorado to this DAY scares me
287 serves Rutgers university New Brunswick via exits 8-10. 476 can also form a Stroudsburg bypass when combined with I-78 from I-80 exit 277. 287 ends at I-95 Twice Edison, NJ and Rye, NY. I-95 has the longest Express local roadway setup from Exit 6 PA Turnpike to the Bronx Western Spur Express Eastern Spur Local from Newark to Ridgefield Park.
Beaver can you talk about the traffic in Baton Rouge, La in your next traffic video. Every time I go there the traffic is worse the Shreveport and New Orleans combined. Can you please investigate this for me.
I was from Louisiana and went to LSU before defecting to Texas. I can say that the problem with Interstate congestion in Louisiana cities (especially Baton Rouge and Lake Charles) is that the politicians want to argue where to put new bridges and what sort they will be for at least 40 years before any dirt flies. Nobody has the [spherical parts] to make a decision!
Anybody else have “Route 66” in your head when you’re listening to the cities these routes pass through? 😂 Pretty sure some of the ones on I-10 are in the song!
The "Interstate 66": I10 - I215 - I15 (Santa Monica to San Bernardino) I15 - I40 (San Bernardino to Barstow) I40 - I44 (Barstow to Oklahoma City) I44 - I55 (Oklahoma City to St. Louis) I55 - end (Chicago)
@@kosjeyr I've driver the I-40 leg of 66 many times. It's interesting how Route 66 still remains alongside it most of the way as either an access road or business route through almost every town.
@@kosjeyr I've never driven in Illinois. Farthest I've ever taken the remants on US-66 is Tulsa. There's really cool big old neon signs along that route through Tulsa.
I do not enjoy 35 through Austin and Dallas area. Same goes for 75 through Atlanta. Never been on most of the others myself. Love these type of videos 👏✌️
Always soo busy. Even though the majority of that route is rural land, it gets so much traffic that it's like driving on an urban highway the whole time. Texas won't stop growing explosively
My experience driving through Atlanta is rather peculiar. Almost always rush hour within a few miles of the I-285 beltway interchanges, but on I-75 downtown has usually been relatively smooth sailing. Maybe not having truck traffic through downtown helps out quite a bit
@@nicholasselke5214 That's strange. Atlanta has a thriving downtown, right? Ik it's a sprawling urban area, but i would still assume with the cultural power Atlanta proper has, it would get more traffic downtown
@@lazygongfarmer2044 It is busy at times.... but Semi-trucks are not allowed on I-75 through downtown, They have to take another route. Which makes the drive a lot nicer.
1:18 - Most of this is know as the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, numbered PA-9 from about 1975-1995. When a new expressway to Chester PA (I-95) was finally completed, the PA Tpk adopted the I-476 number.
I70 actually starts at a connection with i695 west of Baltimore also i80 does not technically go through Chicago it actually stays south of the city yet that area is known as Chicago land on top of that i80 and i90 run together in Ohio and Indiana as the Ohio turnpike and the Indiana toll road. Also i75 runs south of the Tampa Bay area but I 275 goes into the Tampa Bay area and is home to the skyway Bridge and i75 actually ends northwest of Miami.
I just learned I-5 isn't in the top 10. it goes from the Mexican to Canadian border through California, Oregon and Washington. I drive parts of it in Southern California and it didn't occur it wasn't in the top 10, I figured it wouldn't crack the top 5, but didn't think about some of the other ones in the top 10. So thanks for teaching me something new.
Interstate 2 is a one digit highway which is in Texas Interstate 4,Florida is a one way spur from I-95,very long. Interstate 5 is a major highway Fun fact:Just Maryland has an I-95 of course,an 195,295,395,495,595,695,795,and I-895. Interstate 7 will exist later. Coming soon. Interstate 8 is a California Interstate with I-5. Interstate 10 is an interstate major Fun fact:Interstate 10-35 were actually made in 4000 B.C. as their activity. Interstate 12 and 14 are less than 100mi. Interstate 15 Fun fact:I-38,I-50 and 60 don’t even exist. Part 2 for likes 50
You need to recheck Interstate-94, bub. I grew up in the ACTUAL town that I-94 ends in and THAT is roughly another SIXTY miles north-northeast of Detroit known as Port Huron, Michigan. The VERY end dumps out onto Pine Grove Avenue just north of the Blue Water Bridge to Sarnia, Ontario. In FACT....TWO MAJOR freeways end in Port Huron. The OTHER being Interstate-69. IT becomes a divided road of two different names in Port Huron and IT will take you to Indianapolis, Indiana. IF you're going to do a video on FACTUAL things, find out about those things BEFORE you do them!!!!!!!
good video. Just subscribed. I-80 goes from the City of San Francisco, not the Bay Area, to Teaneck, NJ and 5 miles from NYC. The map is wrong, I-80 skirts Chicago but never enters the city. I-476 was grandfathered. The PA Turnpike built an extension to Scranton which was then given an interstate number later on. Agreed on I-70 being wonderful. From Denver to I-15 it is stunning. East of Denver - meh. Keep 'em coming. thanks.
495 is such an important highway in the merrimack valley where i live, traffic is always heavy and provides us only one of 2 interstates the 650,000 people in this area have access to
I've been on all of those 2-digit Interstates at one time or another, since I was a commercial driver for four years. I've been on every foot of I-75, I-94, and I-70. And almost all of I-90, except for the part east of I-495 to its bitter end in Boston. Almost all of I-80, except for downtown San Francisco. Shortest Interstate I've driven: I-587 in Kingston, NY. It's about 2 miles long.
I-94 doesn’t end in Detroit, but you make very clear to mention that I-75 does not end in Detroit. Why discuss the I-35 split in DFW but not discuss the I-35 split in the twin cities?🤦♂️🤦♂️
In Louisiana, I-10 dips down at Baton Rouge and I-12 starts that route continuing strright while I-10 goes through Downtown New Orleans and goes back north meeting the other end of I-12 and the start of I -59 when it turns at the junction to continue East towards Mobile, Alabama
Most people don't know, it was originally called the Innertube Highway System. No -strike- that. The National Defense Highway System. You will have to research the quirky constitutional theories that underlied that designation. Round up the usual suspects, please.
I believe I-90 does not go through Milwaukee when it goes through Wisconsin, I-94 does. I-90 goes south from Madison and down through Beloit WI to Rockford IL, then it cuts over towards Chicago.
Re I-95 and the Northeast Megalopolos - there are stretches of forest and exurbs between Wilmingro DE & Baltimore, and between (greater) Boston and New Haven CT, where 95 was pushed between towns and if an exit wasn't built, no new village appeared.
One thing I noticed for your I-80 section in Ohio 7:41-7:47 , you followed the intended routing for I-80, and not the actual routing. The Actual routing goes much closer to Cleveland, and connects with 90 Elyria and Lorain.
What about I-65? It is a North/South route. I know it runs 367 miles alone in the state of Alabama before going through Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and I believe it ends in Chicago?
Currently I am on I-40 near Nashville,TN. I also live in Cincinnati Ohio with I-275 as our circle freeway the 6th largest at 83 miles and the only circle freeway that passes through 3 states.
