The Longland Traverse on Mount Everest

On May 23, 2019, Sid Pattison and I (Jake Norton) dropped into the Longland Traverse from the 1933 Camp VI on Mount Everest as part of our search for Andrew Irvine.
The Longland Traverse is named after Jack Longland, member of the 1933 British Mount Everest Expedition. Longland helped establish Camp VI at 27,400 feet in the Yellow Band, and then was charged with assisting eight Nepali porters back down to the lower camps. Rather than risk the steep terrain they had ascended, Longland opted for a diagonal bench which now bears his name, heading northward along the North Face toward the Northeast Shoulder.
In 2019, Sid and I headed into the Longland to see if (a) we could spot any evidence of Mallory and Irvine from 1924, and (b) to see if there was a logical route Chhiring Dorje might have taken in 1995 when he reportedly saw a body high on the mountain. The Longland Traverse is rarely if ever used these days, and it was a great pleasure to be on it once again (I went down the Traverse in 2004 as well).
This video is uploaded as part of a massive, interactive panorama project on Mount Everest and its environs. Go deeper and learn more in the Virtual Everest Panorama Project on my website at: jakenorton.com/virtual-mount-everest-tour-is-live/.

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say thank you for not only continuing the search of answers and truths, but also for documenting a lot of this work. This is fantastic to see and follow along on your journey.

Thank you - I'm happy people appreciate the work, and more, the story of 1924 and the pre-World War II expeditions. It's been an honor to be a small part of sharing the story. Thanks again, and be well.

I agree with the comment. Thanks for continuing the search and keep digging into the 1924 mystery. It really deserves to be solved.

Jake is the best investigating and providing material on the Irvine search. I get goosebump just from hearing him talk about Irvine while actually being there and talking very openly and sincerely.

Question: if Andy Irvine slipped nearby, and pulled Mallory off, snapping the rope in the process, would he not be down the bottom of the wall?

In the area where Sid said the travel up to the ridge looks pretty chill, does that area along the traverse bypass the 2nd step? If it does could Mallory and Irvine have taken this traverse to avoid the 2nd step which in 1924 without the ladder would’ve been an impossible obstacle?

Thank you Sir for answering my question on your other video. Hopefully I can ask another question! I read the interview with Xu Jing about how he believes that Andrew Irvine is up on the ridge, he said that they had seen 2 bodies. My question is he said that they buried one body with snow. Do you believe this to be Sandy and I wonder if infact he was buried maybe that's why he hasn't been found yet??? He said in the interview that he wanted to bury the 2nd body but was to exhausted. I know, I'm sorry I'm obsessed with this. I have been fascinated for many years before George had been found. For me I think yes infact they did make the summit, the reason I believe is because of the clues left on Mallory and reading anything and even I could get my hands on. For me though I really want to prove it so George and Andrew get their praise, but also I wanted to know what happened. I also wish we knew every detail of the climb 😂. Anyway thank you for the hard work

Hi Amie, thanks for your note, and never mind at all about asking questions - I love to dig into this story! As for Xu Jing, my understanding has always been that the first body they found - at around 6500 meters - was Maurice Wilson (we found him again in 1999), while the second was most likely Irvine. Xu described the body as being considerably higher than Mallory, and at or near the NE Ridge, and in a different body position than Mallory. And, it is this sighting that seems to coincide with the sighting by Chhiring Dorje in 1995 in a similar area. Hope this all makes sense!
@ericastier1646
@ericastier1646 2 года назад
@@jake_norton It sounds like Irvine's body never fell from the place he died and all those searches looking for falling areas under the ridge are looking in the wrong place. It seems the only way forward to find Irvine is to actually climb those secondary alternative difficult and risky routes that are avoided nowadays. What if he just died of exposure in place in a route that always gets avoided. Dorje route is the top of the list.

@@ericastier1646 They recently delivered oxygen bottles to someone using a drone. With the latest drones, it can be done even at this altitude. Besides, the drone itself can be lost and you'd still have the video it shot.

I'm looking at that ridge at 0:50 seconds in, and that looks like a motorway to me on that camera. It must be difficult walking on rock in those crampons though without any ice or snow. I personally think they ducked the steps on the way up and took the ridge route down. As an ex British soldier I'm looking at the topography and think your just gonna go in the path of least resistance, but coming down in the dark you might want to keep the ridge close to try and gauge where your at.

Part of it is the challenge of flying a drone up that high, another part is the Chinese government isn't too fond of drones in their airspace. And, finally, it's so much more fun to be up there in person! :)
