You are very good at these video essays! I really like when you break things down like this, as it gives me a greater appreciation for the skill and artistry at work. Also, it displays your own talents quite well. Impressive!
Please continue your work, your video essays are phenomenal! You break down such emotions and actions so thoroughly and share their effect perfectly. You deserve millions of subscribers. You’ve helped me through my personal essays as well when I have to break down actions of characters and much more. I hope you have the ability to upload again, i’ll be looking forward to whatever you upload :))
Not just this scene, your analysis gets me tears. Nothing more overwhelming than revealing the greatness of something. This scene and also the blackgate one in ROTK always give me goosebumps, the catharsis as you put it.
I really hope you return one day, you’ve given me appreciation for films I loved and informatively and clearly display points very well, I watch many video-essay RU-vidrs but to my dim brain sometimes I struggle with understanding some points and/or overarching theme and your videos are just so clear and correct in directors notes and I love them. I’d love to see more.
Love the LotR video - great analysis, and I didn't see it coming at all. Look forward to the next one. I feel like the music in this scene is severely underrated. It's because of Howard Shore's brilliance that this is my favorite scene in the movie trilogy. Throughout the second and third movie, the audience hears several different forms of the Rohan theme. There's the sad, hopeless variation as Gandalf and the "three hunters" arrive at Edoras. Then there's the triumphant version, as Gandalf releases Théoden from Saruman's magic. These two variations are pretty much what permeates tTT and RotK when focusing on Rohan. Yet, when it finally comes to the battle of the Pelennor Fields, the two sort of combine. The theme playing is sad and mournful, but also triumphant. The music reflects on Théoden's words at Dunharrow - "No. We cannot [defeat the orcs]. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless." The Rohirrim don't expect to win, but they ride forth nonetheless, to meet glorious death. The theme reflects on that perfectly, and even if the audience isn't specifically listening to the music there (I always am because I fucking love it), it still massively affects the tone of the scene. P.S. - Théoden is Éowyn's uncle, not father.
Definitely! I gave the music a brief mention but there are a million RU-vid videos which break down the music from the trilogy. Absolutely brilliant! And yeah I don't know how I stuffed that up between Eowyn and Theoden, I even had it right in my script! Don't know what went wrong there :)
Wow, this channel blew up quick. Congrats to 40k man. Came here a month ago for the YR content and came back now for another of my all time favourites. Great quality as always. Keep it up
I still haven't seen the LOTR trilogy, but this like all your other analyses reminded me of how much passion artists put into every detail of a film or series--that's what makes people fall in love with their work. Thanks for another great review!
Am I the only worried about this excellent film essayist? He all of the sudden disappeared from here, Instagram, and Twitter all at the same time. I am really concerned, hope he's fine, just too busy to make videos.
I am so glad that you did a video on these films! I find that film analysis channels tend to overlook them and it makes me sad. They are a masterclass in filmmaking. Thank you for a fantastic video, I really look forward to your next one! Congrats on 40k :)
I understand why you stopped posting but your videos are and were great. Hopefully you return cause you have an audience that loves you and your content
This might just be my favourite RU-vid channel. Your discussion of these films and scenes makes me cry everytime. The works you are making are powerful and deeply thoughtful. Thank you.
The first video that I’ve watched from you was the video essay about marriage story. I was blown away by the way you tell your story and saturate me with emotions I didn’t even realise I was feeling. I totally thought you were a well established channel but turns our you’re new! I’m just so amazed at how good you are and how much i love these videos. Good job! I’m looking forward to more!
This is one of my favourite scenes in cinema ever. I have the lines memorized to the point I repeat them along with the characters. I am so happy you made a video analysing the beauty behind it. I never knew why, even when I watched it from the first Rohan horn, I still teared up. Despite not having gone through the emotions of the rest of the film. P.S, I can't believe you didn't mention the over enthusiastic rider at 7:25.
Hey, you should definitely do a review/analysis of ‘I’m thinking of ending things’ It’s a pretty insane film and took me two watches to understand half of the storyline (if you can even call it that). Anyway I’d love to hear your take on it and see all the subtleties I missed :) Also great videos, you’ve definitely got a lot of success coming :D
Just wanna comment that your videos are so good, and they keep on getting recommended to me by the algorithm even after you haven't posted in a while! I hope you come back. Take care and see you soon!
From now on when I see this scene (that yes, makes me cry every time) I'm gonna yell out "I'M HUMAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!" confusing all but learnèd scholars in the room. Awesome video and analysis - amazing movie, found out things about video editing magic...every video you've made so far has been top tier, thank you!!!
wow, so much detail and thought in so little time!! i LOVE videos like this because they help me appreciate the art on a more granular level, so i know not just That it works but Why it works. thank you so much for sharing this!
These are incredible! Please keep making your analysis videos. I haven’t watched a video essay quite like yours. I really appreciate the depth you can reach by breaking down one scene. Or even the Call Me By Your Name essay, I don’t think anything else I’ve seen compares.
You're my favourite channel and I fear you always will be, you're so passionate about the reviews and about the movies which I thought no one cared about. But now I feel like there are a lot of people who are actually so involved and passionate about the things that I am passionate about too. You're reviews are the best, my friend. You're doing an amazing job, and the editing is on another level. You're the best. Good much for the future .🤍 Apologies if my English is bad, it's not my first language.
This was an awesome breakdown of this. These are my favourite films and this is my favourite scene of any film ever. Can't wait for more from you, regardless of the film.
Aint no way bro yesterday I saw this happen too with another channel, he dropped 3 AMAZING video essays and now is nowhere to be found, and today you too 😭 I really enjoyed ur vids I hope you are doing alright
Another excellent analysis. The slight reservation I have is that by only naming Jamie Selkirk as editor, you maybe don’t give enough weight to Peter Jackson’s role in the process. He has always co-edited his own films, even if his name doesn’t appear as such in the credits. Another interesting aspect to this is the degree to which pre-vis was used in LOTR, especially on RotK, not only as a directorial tool but also as a form of pre-edit. Apart from Theoden being Eowyn’s uncle, you also mention his ‘spear’ when it’s actually his sword, but that’s a bit nit-picky.
Found this channel from your marriage story video and now I'm binging them. Kinda crazy cuz I was just looking for new video essay youtubers and the algorithm led me here! Are you studying film or are these things you just picked up on?
Excellent video! I've really enjoyed your work so far. If you liked Young Royals and are curious about good European films, I'd love to recommend to you (and anyone else) the German film Werk ohne Autor (Never Look Away, Eng.) by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, 2018. It's such a good film and it's not talked about enough, by far!
