Doesn’t matter how many times I watch the trilogy, whenever I get to return of the king it’s still an emotional rollercoaster...every time (and I’ve seen it a lot) that’s what makes them the greatest films ever made. Even after all that time and the countless times I’ve watched it still hits you right to the core and every time you rewatch it feels like you’re seeing it again for the first time
Yes. I think of my mother and she has been gone for 25 years. She passed away 6 months after my brother passed due to medical mapractice. The hardest thing I ever had to do was tell my mother her "baby" had passed. 😭😭
Christopher Tolkien died tonight at the age of 95. I will remember him for ever. Without him tolkiens legendarium would not be completed. When I heard the message of his death I thought instantly at this beautiful song. Rip Christopher Tolkien. You took a grey ship into the west
@@markc1234golf no shite sherlock! But Christopher did a lot of writing too and without him we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the Silmarillion, and many middle Earthy books after that.
The song was written for Cameron Duncan of New Zealand, a young film maker Peter Jackson was impressed with who passed away from cancer. It was first played at his funeral and is a very beautiful song from the heart of Annie Lennox. Rest In Peace.
Our Daughter Elizabeth Wise was murdered by her husband on May 15th in Steelton, PA. We find so much comfort in this song and it helps us through this most painful time. This was played during her funeral and all found it so appropriate. Thank you for reaching into our hearts and if anyone is interested please look her up and read her story. May God help you find the strength to help others who are victims of domestic violence and prevent other families from this agony.
I did a google search and found an article about her murder. I am so, so sorry something so terrible happened to your daughter! Essentially, the violence was also inflicted on you and your grandchildren because of your love for Elizabeth. Such horrifying things should not happen in this world, but they do. :(
Dear Mike, I am not sure you will not die, if this song is not played at your funeral, but I love the sentiment. I just felt I wanted to acknowledge your comment. (Like: "I wish I'd written that!") Thank you, Peter Selig P.S. I am a 45-year long fan of TLOTR, but more focused on the books, and reading/re-reading them, than the movies - though I believe Peter Jackson and all his team did a magnificent job or rendering the stories into film in a manner which has great depth and integrity. I consider it would be hard to do any better job than Peter Jackson and his team did, now or anytime in the future. And, yes, I love this song by Annie Lennox. 😊
The mark of a truly well-done ending. That overwhelming feeling of nostalgia which causes you to look back at all that happened on their journey, fondly remembering both the good and bad, is how you know that it is truly a great piece of media.
Legolas Greenleaf long under tree In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea! If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore, Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more.
I sang this song at my sisters sons funeral this year. He was born a month early on my birthday, the most beautiful boy I ever got to hold and feel. I’ll never be able to watch the trilogy without constant being reminded of him, and how he was taken away from us before he even got to open his eyes.
in a time of Marvel and Star Wars films on a conveyor belt .. I always come back to Lord of the Rings. It's a special world that was released during a special time in my life. It felt like an event when they came out, everyone was talking about them and it felt like cinema history. Nothing quite like it has come since.
I just rewatched the entire extended trilogy again and when this song came on at the end I fully lost it 😭 Annie Lennox was absolutely perfect for it. The way her voice gains so much strength when she sings 'on the horizon' and 'a pale moon rises' gets me EVERY TIME
This song has always had a special place in my heart anyway, but the lyrics really resonated with me as I was saying goodbye to my dad at his bedside in hospital as he was slipping away from this world...I went on to read it out loud as part of my eulogy at his funeral. It's a very bittersweet composition for me, but I will always love it for various reasons.
When The Return of the King was broadcased on TV in Japan for the first time, I was suffered a severe fever. But I watched that movie because I really wanted to. I love this movie.
Every single thing about TLOR trilogy is just perfection, from the casting, to the visual effects, music and pacing of story from the books...and all the way through there is a most treasurable underlying value that is the story of unbreakable friendship.
When I was a child, my father would read "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" to my sister and I as bedtime stories. This nice, slow, lullaby-esque song, coupled with the imagery of the video, really takes me back... and makes me very tired... this is amazing, thank you so much!
Funny thing, that's what Tolkien wrote "The Hobbit" for: as a bedtime story for his kids. And then he just couldn't contain his nerdiness, so he went all out and wrote everything down for everybody. 😊😄😂 And yes, this song seems like a lullaby at first, but as you listen to the lyrics, you realize that it's also a farewell for someone who's about to die. That makes it so sad.
You know what, it feels good to cry. To just let all those bottled-up emotions out. It's relieving. Thank you person who made this. For you have made me genuinely happy for the first time in years.
Best thing ever!! Beautiful. :,) In honor of Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Bilbo, Merry, Pippin, Boromir, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, and all the others that fought with and for Frodo. And to J. R. R Tolkien himself! May your memory never fade!!!
big thumbs 👍👍👍👍👍on rewatching the lord of the rings that extended version of this all time great is a must have "and i mean that when i say one of thi greatest trilogies in movie cinema"
This makes my hairs stand on edge, and gives me a chill. It's such an emotive song with imagery just as memorable. These are some of the best films from modern times.
amen. Too much for me to listen to sometimes. it was my first ever love of anything.. and now i'm 20. where has time gone… wow. i wish we could go back. things were so much better back then..
I think nostalgia may be blinding your reason. I wouldn't want to go back. those perceived 'simpler times' are no more than mirrage. Make the most of now. :)
I remember being stuck in my seat at the theater as this song came on.It was so haunting and beautiful that I couldn't move! Not many songs can do that, this can and still does.
The song, 'Into the West," is so powerful, so deeply moving, touching the heart, and Annie Lennox's singing and voice are simply a marvel. But after watching this video many times over the years, I also want to say how *terrific* the video editing of this is..the choice of scenes, the segues, the synchronization of the music and scenes are simply brilliant -- indeed, almost perfect. Thanks and deep bows to the creator of this marvelous video!
I just finished the trilogy again and it make my heart feel joy and pain and wonder how we can feel so much all at once and the song man so much emotion!!!❤
Zachary Van Oostenrijk Lmfao no do some research before spitting out such a ridiculous thing. This song was written and performed by Scottish Singer/Songwriter Annie Lennox, she even won both a Golden Globe, as well as an Academy award for it. I think you're confusing it with "The Last Goodbye" from the final Hobbit movie, that one was performed by Billy Boyd.
As much as i love the lord of the rings its the one song from the end of the film i cant still listen to, as it brings back to painful memories of my step dads funeral on the day he burried . Even tho its a lovely song
The movies, despite any perceived flaws and actual alterations for the sake of the movie adaptation, were truly passion projects done by someone who truly respected what was made by the late, great Tolkien. It was the ultimate movie experience for everyone who ever watched them back in the early 2000s. I remember the feelings so vividly.. and I had not read the books and no one was around to spoil it for me. I had no idea Gandalf would return. I had no idea about anything. It was absolute *bliss* . It truly brings a tear to the eye everytime I think about it. To think that barely anyone will ever get to experience the same is saddening. Amazon is bastardizing the universe so painstakingly made by Tolkien. Sullying the name of the Trilogy made manifest by the brilliant director Peter Jackson. It may have centered around a select group of people and as such wasn't as "representative", but that does not give Amazon the right to make up their own bullshit. It's truly a shame. They should have consulted with people who actually love the books and the world they made.
Tolkien, Peter Jackson, Alan Lee, Howard Shore and Neill Finn - all men that we will never forget! And from them our children and grandchildren will still know! Middle Earth is like it's really existing somewhere. And after our death we will go there and live in peace with the elves, the drwarves and the humans. (Hope my english is okay :'D)
Heaven for me is Middle Earth but after the Ring is destroyed and peace is restored to the land. Just think how peaceful it would be to sit on a rocking chair in Hobbiton smoking a pipe.
Please let's also remember Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett, Miranda Otto, Enya, Annie Lennox, and all the other women who contributed their considerable gifts to the quest to bring Middle Earth to "life " (in an artistic sense.)
Sun was about to rise as I sat in a movie theater in Culver City. Watching the midnight showing of Return of the King. When dear Frodo looks back to his fellowship…his brethren hobbits…my eyes were so filled with tears, I couldn’t see the screen. That chorus made the tears flow while seeing the closing of a masterpiece. I looked back at the audience and all I could see were light dancing upon the watery eyes reflecting off the screen. A magical community all sharing these feelings. I stepped out of the theater just as the sun was peeking out from the horizon.
@@skatebride9205 Wonderful! How could ANYONE keep it together singing this song at their loved one's funeral?! My god the strength to do that....I would lose it and just cry my eyes out!
You and me both... Pretty sure those Lands are there, too, and that it's only a matter of time. At the risk of stating the obvious, there can be an awful lot of power and truth in myth...
+J Pysmythe Even if they are there, mortals can't reach them. And I'm glad about that. At least there's one last place that humanity can't sully and destroy...
I watch this movie every year and i can watch it every year for the rest of my life. It will always be good and it will always remain my favorite. I saw this movie in the passed year maybe 5 times on the tv, by a friend and by choice and i am always tempted to watch it again even though i just finished my anual routine. It always drags me into middle earth and i dont want to leave it. I feel bad for swtiching to another channel, cause there is no reason for any other movie or program in the world to put LOTR on second priority. My whole heart goes to this movie/story, its moral, the lesson that has been learned and the wisedom it contains. I always use it as my sourch to teach others about the world and how it truly works.. cause thats exactly what this movie shows. I adore this song and it gives me great memories. I had everything the movie deserves and its perfectly choosen and made!
+Jj W oh I could do that too but I get more excited if theres a year in between, cause it takes me away easier then when I know whats happenings everu single sec.
I feel the Song so deep and warm in my heart until 1:26. So broken. So soft. So gentle. So nice wet tears in my eyes. So small shattered heart pieces. This part has everything.
velvetsixx I knew I would not be the only one to turn to this song to honor and say farewell to our most beloved Christopher Lee. Rest in peace, you glorious man! :(
The Jackson trilogy of films will never be equaled in scope and the sheer beauty of the filming. Many scenes are works of art. The acting, the casting, the sound track are all superior to most any movies ever made. I admit to being biased as a Tolkien nut, but Jackson's films really do capture the essence of the books, a very daunting task which he did succeed doing.
When I die I'm gonna have this song played at my funeral and then, just to change the mood, the benny hill theme will be played afterwards. I'm DEAD serious!
You love this trilogy because, at it core it speaks to our shared ancestral heritage, we are not a evil people, we believe in our shared humanity, and a better and greater destiny.
I loved this song when I heard it in the film. I played it at my mothers funeral 4 months ago because it just seemed so fitting. I still get very emotional when I hear it, I think it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Miss you so much mum.
I mean name a better one imo. Godfather went downhill quickly and actually the second was better than the first. There literally isn't a more consistent trilogy in movie history especially with the critical acclaim to back it. I mean they aren't just rated in the top 10 movies of all time (at least) they bloody have like 12 Oscars between them xD
Sometimes, when I'm listening to this, I forget I'm on earth. Then I think, I'm in Arda, in Middelearth and it's Luthien Tinuviel singing this to me, so wonderfull is this song... I think, when it's time, we all must take our way to the halls of Mandos, and then this song will be played...
