Here we have 'The Lord of the Rings', a three volume edition, by J.R.R. Tolkien published by HarperCollins. This edition is illustrated by Alan Lee.
These three hardcover volumes are bound in paper in a smyth-sewn binding. The binding is sadly quite tight and hard to open for each of the three volumes. The paper is thick, white paper of very good quality. It is acid-free, pH neutral and the illustrations are printed on the same paper stock with fairly good quality. The books also have silk-ribbons and maps as endpapers. The book is printed and bound by Rotolito in Italy.
This LOTR edition is probably the most price-worthy of all LOTR editions out there. You get solid smyth-sewn books, printed in two colors (black and red) with so many of Alan Lee's classic illustrations.

I've had this set for some time. the "Box" of the box set is quite tight for the four books and makes it very difficult to pull out individual volumes without damaging the paper flaps or the books themselves. but if t you don't care for the flaps or the box, they are very good quality.

Do you prefer these or the folio editions? I’ve been looking at these for the price, but I wonder if the folio editions are made with better craftsmanship and more readable?

The Folio editions would be better in terms of quality and readability, for sure! All comes down to price and how much you want to spend, and the design/illustrator you enjoy the most!
