The Lost Art of Video Game Critique

This video is a response to @JosephAndersonChannel and @feebleking21. It is a critique of their critiques. @Matthewmatosis is also featured heavily but he is not the focus of the video. The focus of the video is the style of critique that both Joseph Anderson and Feeble King affect, and the accusations of toxicity (both negative and positive) that they recently made in their respective Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree critiques.

*Amendments* * I unfairly threw Ratatoskr under the bus. I included him here because that video embodies a review of a game that only talks about the negative aspects really succinctly. But there is a difference between his work and the other critics I talk about. Although I dislike that video because I'm more interested in his whole opinion than the 0.2%, I don't think he's guilty of the same style of critique that I'm really addressing here. I should have made a clearer distinction. Sorry. * Seems like I fell into the very common trap of calling Nietzsche a nihilist. He's a more complex guy than that and my interpretation of his work was shallow. My interpretation in the video still stands as an analogy to the game and it's still important to show Feeble's misquotation and lack of sources. Even if my interpretation was flawed, I argue that it's still stronger and better researched than Feeble's one. But please do dig into Nietzsche's work yourself because I don't represent his ideas super well here. Sorry, Nietzsche. *Death of the Author - A commenter correctly pointed out that Death of the Author is not concerned with the theory that the author has intended you to do whatever you want. The core of the idea is that the intention of the author is irrelevant. It's not their intention anymore. It doesn't matter what they intend. I've sort of conflated both authorial intent and death of the author in the point I make. The point still stands that you can play the game however you want, even if it goes against what you may perceive as developer intent. *Please don't use this video as justification to say git gud or skill issue. As I've said a couple times, I don't like that discourse. I say it to Joe and Feeble in respect to their critiques as a bit of a snarky dig but I don't condone the kind of argument that waves away a person's opinions with an accusation that they are bad at the game. I think Joe reacted badly to those comments but I still don't condone the use of them. It's not about skill it's about mindset. But even so, it's not okay to say that it is someone's "fault" for not liking the game. People are allowed to dislike things in the same way you are allowed to like things. You don't need to convince them they're wrong. That's not what this video is about. Important to note! Obviously not all the reviews/critiques of this game are negative. Responses are overwhelmingly positive from mainstream video game journalists. I don't think this game is an underrated gem or anything. The base game won Game of the Year. It's clearly a very successful and acclaimed series of games and contrarian discussion is healthy and necessary. I'm talking here about a very specific form of critique that is very very common in the souls community in particular, and why I don't like that form of critique. You're allowed to dislike it. You're allowed to think it is a flawed masterpiece. I just want to hear more about the "masterpiece" and less about the "flawed". When I discuss opinions on the game and make claims that they are "wrong", I am addressing interpretations of developer intent that I believe don't hold up well under scrutiny. Even so, when I say something is "wrong", and I am talking about an interpretation, that is my opinion. Subjectivity is implied ;) Keep the discussion civil. I don't mean ill will to the people I talk about in this video even if I am quite harsh and snarky throughout. This is a discussion of art and ideas. It's also a genuine plea for self-reflection. This isn't a take-down. It isn't content cop. You're allowed to not like things. I'm allowed to like things. Let's be cool about it. We are currently accepting new members to join the Cult of Fromsoft. Praise be, Surrogate-All-Father Miyazaki. He who satisfies our victim complex Gred

Brief comment on the Sisyphus point brought up around 1 hour in, i dont believe sisyphus would be happy because of the merit of his work, and his ability to perfect/improve pushing the boulder eternally. His happiness derives from the fact that he could stop at any time, but that would let the Gods win. He has deadlocked himself to an eternity of monotony and repetition all on his own. As long as sisyphus rolls the boulder, the gods are wrong, and that means he wins. The second he gives up, they win. Sisyphus enables his own hell, and he is content with that.
@GredGlintstone
@GredGlintstone 22 часа назад
That's a really good point and well articulated. He's creating the meaning for his suffering by making it his choice.
@cosimomedicis8094
@cosimomedicis8094 21 час назад
Hey about sisyphus, while i do agree that Camus brings up the concept of "revolt" a lot, the point Camus makes isn't that Sisyphus is happy because he could stop at any time, it's not a revolt against the gods that casted him in this hell. It's a revolt against the absurdity of existence itself. So Sisyphus doesn't become happy throught conflict and confrontation, he becomes happy through creativity ; by finding meaning where there is none and for exemple by "leaving a trace" behind the boulder he pushes, each time the trace is different. Then, he transcend his condition, he isn't bound by the punishment of the gods, he doesn't create in spite of them.

"You can use a Rune Arc to give even greater benefits to your equipped Great Runes." - implies that there is a benefit to equipping Great Runes, before using a Rune Arc.. and that using a Rune Arc makes that benefit even greater. I'm genuinely trying to interpret that in another way, but I can't. Remember, some people haven't played Dark Souls. If you didn't already know that's how Great Runes worked, would you really interpret the description any differently?

However from context the natural conclusion to me is that this is not a bug, but more likely either a mistranslation or a leftover from previous designs due to a mistake. Yes I am passionate about this game, and yes I will definitely get mad when a critique doesn't do his due diligence on research correctly. I'm quite ok with my part of the responsibility.

@@cosimomedicis8094 Yes he did. But you would know that if you watched the video. He has a section about it. He even apologized for swaying the discussion too much one way. Does that mean, he agrees with every criticism made towards his own video? No and that's okay, because I watched criticism of his criticism and they are also quite subjective a lot of times. And it's really funny that you bring up Loopine, because when I tried to discuss the points he made in the video and showed how he didn't properly adress JA's criticism or how his conclusion in some chapters just doesn't fit what he says beforehand, he called me and I quote him here "A true lobotmite." So I am not sure that's the guy you want to reference, but sure go ahead. I just find it funny that your "responsibility" is referencing - "counting frames" which he did one time during his original ER video and as far as I could tell, he wasn't really that far off, so even if he wasn't 100% correct, his point still stands as he was also using the first movement of the boss as an indication anyway - referencing another RU-vidr who is similarly subjective in a lot of his takes and when confronted with it, his form of taking responsibility is to insult the other person - referencing Bloodborne which was 8 years ago Yeah, I don't think you are taking true responsibility here.

@@Modie I did watch the video but I'm sorry saying (even if he says that it's hyperbolic) "you have to watch the left nostril of a boss opening" implies only one thing: that the openings of a boss are unrealisticly hard to read. He does not come back on his points and his false statements. As he says subjectivity is implied... Also he said "under 20 frames " and it's 38 so double, how's that for "not far off" but you would have known that if you watched the first 12 mins of this video. You argue with me without actually informing yourself on what you are arguing about, mmmmh Also someone calling you names doesn't invalidate what his saying it just means he doesn't want to take the time to respond. Is it ok ? No, he could have just ignored it but it's the internet, the fact I even take the time to write a paragraph and not let an ai do it is already incredible. Also how is it that referencing a older video that contains the same fallacies as his more modern video invalidates my point
@hian
@hian День назад
On the whole subjectivity/objectivity thing, as something that's always bothered me about how people with little philosophical literacy talk about such things: Subjectivity is only implied when a statement is in regards to something that cannot be anything other than subjective. If a person says, "(I think) chocolate tastes better than strawberry ice cream(in my opinion)", even if they were to drop the linguistic markers of subjectivity, we recognize the subjectivity because it isn't clear in what sense a thing could taste better(a qualic feature of the subjective experience) than another in objective terms. However, most statements are not, in fact, clearly subjective. They're composite statements, consisting of part empirical observations/claims, syllogistic features(A and B, therefore C etc), and value judgements(reports of subjective experience), and as such, are prone to being wrong on levels of the empirical claims or reasoning regardless the subjective elements. If a person says, "In Norway, people have long holidays and a relaxed work culture, therefore (I think) Norwegians are more happy," that's not "just an opinion", and, if someone were to question whether Norwegians do in fact have long vacations and a relaxed work culture, or how that entails happiness, no-one gets to just dismiss that with some vacuous appeal to opinion or subjectivity. Almost every statement that comes out the mouth of critics(and indeed most people in general) are synthetic, and therefore subject to possible errors of judgement worthy of scrutiny and critique. Using appeals to opinion or subjectivity to obfuscate that or reject criticism is disingenuous and/or displays a fundamental lack of understanding of rhetoric and linguistics. To be fair though, some of this probably comes from the fact that the word "opinion" itself isn't used in a particularly narrow and clear fashion. Fundamentally, we should probably only refer to subjective value judgements as "opinions", but we do not, except when disingenuously trying to defend faulty statements from critique. The aforementioned synthetic statements are regularly referred to as "opinions". But, if we accept them as such, then opinions aren't merely subjective statements and as such, the delineation between them and empirical claims in general is meaningless. On a related note on language, and a tiny nit-pick: There's no such thing as a "wrong fact" or "incorrect fact". That's oxymoronic. Either something is a fact, or it isn't. A "wrong fact" is just a false claim or error =P
@GredGlintstone
@GredGlintstone День назад
Great comment and well spoken. You've said a lot of things here that I struggled to. Very valid nit pick. I really debated what terminology to use there. @@GredGlintstone No worries. I think you got the point across and I was just very enthused to see one more person in this space actually adress it, because damn it, has it become common for people to use "opinion" as a shield for their faulty logic or dubious factual claims. The problem is that most people don't utilize the higher parts of the mind; all they know of "thinking," is simply opinions about feelings they have and nothing deeper. I call people out for hiding behind "it's just my opinion" or "it's subjective" all the time. You can't say "the way the artist used the color blue in this painting is bad," and then say "that's just my opinion". You made a statement, either delve deeper into the facts of the matter and (at least attempt to) make a definitive statement about how they used blue, or say " I think" or " I feel". Maybe the blue clashes with other colors and detracts from the rest of the image, then say that. It's not that hard.

Oh. My. God! The "Why Don't You Want Games To Be Good?" part of your video was the nail on the head for me, it's like a hammer hitting the nail in the most satisfying way, oh it was too good, you literally took the words out of my brain & spit it out to your Microphone into an editing software, into a video & finally uploaded it to RU-vid. So satisfying to hear that from another person. I was screaming "EXACTLY" I even clapped a couple of times. Absolutely phenomenal, thank you so much! Also "The EXPLOSION" part was also fantastic & hit the right notes while being respectful too. I just finished the video. Before I end my comment, there's one thing that Feeble said in his 1st video about SOTE & it was this point about game difficulty: “Hard doesn’t & has never equated to good game design.” He brought the “hard” concept in a vacuum, stripped out of its influence on game design intrinsically, OK if that’s the case, let’s bring a game that he adores (Sekiro), let’s make it a much easier & forgiving game, because hey, since the “hard” part of the game isn’t what made it good, let’s make enemy attacks slower, let’s make the player not die after 2-3 hits, let it be after 10 or 15 hits, let’s make Genichiro or Sword Saint Isshin have less complex combo strings, less weird timings, less delays, surely that’ll make it easier, but will that equate to a better designed game? Or a more “fun” game? No, it does not IMO & I for dang sure not in his opinion nor the majority, now the game doesn’t require enough understanding of its mechanics, there’s no reason to feel any threat or respect to its rules, there’s not much rewarding feeling afterwards, now combos are much more simpler & the rhythm has been decreased dramatically, so we stripped the “hard” part now and this is what we get, a much simpler game, surely “less than average” players will enjoy it without finding much hardships or frustration like with his Mario Lost Levels VS Mario Bros example, a lot of the “fun” that come from FromSoft's games is through their mechanics & recognizing patterns & using the player's mechanics in order to overcome those, both have to be congruent, you can't move really fast in Sekiro while every other enemy & boss are much slower than you or have very simple combos, this is what makes them fun & hard (whoa that sounded suggestive 😅), overcoming adversity & hardships is what makes you feel rewarded. And I like how he took the OG Mario Bros & said it’s better for the majority, he counted that as a positive, but From Software’s games have never been for the majority, in fact, the harder they get, the more people they brought, so this throws a big curveball to his argument fundamentally, just look at DS3, BB & Sekiro sales, they're higher & more popular than Demon's Souls, DS1 & DS2, and this supposed “hard” DLC sold 5 million units in a week, so people enjoy the difficulty & overcoming adversity? Or they shouldn't because that will make them "toxic" when they disagree with you, Feeble...🤣😭

What happened with games are art? If you watch a Wim Wenders film, or read a book by Salinger, sometimes a scene will exist just for it to exist. Maybe it will grab you, maybe it will make different people feel different things. Either way it will do something to you, because you're experiencing the art work. This is what I felt with a lot of the "lackluster" ares of SotE. Finger ruins is awe inspiring and otherwordly. As a new fan to these games because of Elden Ring back then, I didn't think much of it, but these last 2 years and the release of the DLC really opened my eyes as to just how awful so many online self-proclaimed "game critics" are at critique. Honestly, the problem extends outside video games as well, as other media are plagued by very similar bad faith or terrible critics, and this topic could've extended far beyond just the extent of Elden Ring and Soulslikes in general. The entire landscape of online media "critique" has been, in my opinion, over saturated with individuals just like Anderson and Feeble. Bad at proper critique, negativity centered, and filled with lies, disingenuous arguments, or hypocritical statements. Honestly, the moment that broke me more than anything was Feeble's DLC video and his disregard for getting to see St. Trina, and saying the "real" reward was just a cookbook. As someone who loves the lore of Elden Ring, that blatant hand waving away of one of the game's most important and enigmatic characters in the lore felt, to me, more disrespectful to the people who worked on the DLC than just calling them lazy. Calling them "absurdly lazy" is one thing, but to do that, not even acknowledging the artistry of her design, the somber music, the revelation of getting to see someone the community had been speculating about for over 2 years, not even a passing mention of her was a more direct level of disrespect that showed, right then and there, how shameless his "critique" was. Edit: misspelled "Loopine"

On "oversaturation of ... negativity ...": Negativity sells, and RU-vid becoming a viable source of income for many these days may have played into that. I don't have any scientific sources rn but I'm confident enough that we can find papers on that easily, since drama and outrage has been a mainstream media staple for long. Just from a layman's perspective, videos that take a negative approach almost always has a higher view count than the positive ones. Channels like CinemaSins took advantage of this to great effect. Heck, the 2 videos on Gred's channel that blew up are discussing destructive behavior, and I only have found him because of this video. But yeah, I think humanity could benefit from a bigger push on focusing on the 'wins'. I make a habit of praising independent authors' (whether that's a musician, artist, game developer, or challenge-runner matters not) work, articulating details that they've clearly put effort in, etc. What they're doing is usually thankless and speaking of experience, one single thought-out compliment/constructive critique can mean a lot.

The boss's remembrance which gives you either its weapon or a sorcery, runes to be used for whatever purpose you want, access to the rest of St. Trina's quest which gives you more item rewards, and the cookbook which gives you access to new crafting items. It’s really funny with the way some on here come about this, since when did Souls games ever give you as much rewards as Elden Ring? Bloodborne when you beat Orphan of Kos, what the heck did they give you as a reward? Nothing, just a trash useless weapon “Kos Parasite”, what did DS3 give you after beating Sister Friede, just her Soul that gives you her weapon, nothing else. What did the game give you after beating Midir? Just his soul, that’s it, you fall down a big hole and you find him, that’s it lol. And Orphan of Kos & Sister Friede are part of the main path, Putrescent Knight is a FREAKING SIDE path, and it gives you more rewards than the main course in Bloodborne & Dark Souls 3. 😭😭 I can go on and on…

People always call the Souls series "tough but fair", and I don't agree. They are not fair. They are cruel, incomprehensible worlds that explain nothing and grind you to dust. Only through immense perseverance and teamwork can we overcome these odds, and many will fall and turn hollow with despair. The reason it feels good to beat a Souls game is because that isn't a guarantee, you cannot just "git gud" and beat everything. It takes learning and cooperation, which has always been a central theme of the series.

I think it's that whole "I'm refusing to learn so clearly the game wasn't trying to teach me" that really gets to me. So much of the attitude and misinformation seems to stem from that alone, no matter if it's weapons or bosses or exploration. And it's so sad because what I love about FromSoft's games is that they teach you constantly. Even that "gotcha" game design is all teaching. I refer to it jokingly as "FromSoft gave me trust issues" but once you LEARN that they will always try to trick you and trap you and scare the shit out of you, you will ALSO learn to predict it. I had a moment in Sekiro where I went "I just know a guy is hiding behind that corner", and guessing correctly and being able to sneak up on that guy instead of him jumpscaring me was almost as satisfying as taking Sword Saint down for the first time. I think that Joseph made a really entertaining video about the DLC even if he got some parts wrong about it, whereas Feeble is literally known for rage-baiting and feeding the algorithm what it wants. I really love Elden Ring and the DLC and what I think is that these players got something I'd like to call fromsoft-tiredness. They dont appreciate where fromsoft was in 2009 compared to how insanely well made the newest entry is or how they would like to say: "miss the forest for the trees". What I mean by that is these people dont care anymore about the beautiful landscapes and cool little hidden areas or cookbook recipes. To me they are trying to "critizise" the game into becoming their personal-objectively-best-souls-game, which I find incredibly disingeiuous considering how much Elden Ring stands out. They are missing the experience side of things... As far as I remember I didnt use that many cookbook recipes because I didn't feel the need to in my first ever playthrough of the game, but its a nice touch for people who ARE struggling and need to use all their options in these games. Especially people like Feeble and Joseph try to "critique" the combat of the DLC when they bearly switch or interact with the combat system at all. Remember joseph being the only Greatsword Warrior in his basegame Elden Ring "critique", and how much he got clowned on for it. The same goes for quests, what gives you the right to "critique" the quests if you arent even doing them in the first place? Where comes the understanding in hindsight like: Ohh this is where npc X moves after Y happens...! Even if the rewards for quests arent that great... Anyway, great video Gred and greetings from Germany!

1:48:33 Coming back to say that he's using the Milady with Sacred affinity and the AotC Wing ash of war. That ash is flashy but not particularly good, Holy damage isn't good against Bayle, and he's splitting his scaling 3 ways between Strength, Dex and Faith. If he wants to get more damage without changing his weapon he should switch to a Blood affinity for better Dex scaling and bleed build up that scales with Arcane. He can also swap the ash to something that's more useable in the fight, like Braggart's Roar for an attack and defence buff, or Cragblade for more stance pressure, or Wing Stance if he wants a flashy combo. Then he can swap out his talismans for whichever ones suit his weapon and playstyle. He's currently using the Two-Handed Sword and Axe talismans, so he should be going for charged heavy attacks, although he's also using the Winged Sword insignia which is better for light attacks. I can't tell if he's using a Crimson Amber Medallion or an INT boosting talisman, but he shouldn't be using either this late in the game. Then there's the physick flask which is another source of buffs, and consumables which are available to every build. So it's not even that he needs to change his weapon to a different one that does more damage, he's not even optimising the weapon he's currently using.

Again, thank you for releasing this video. Your display of well thought out arguments and observations is helping this community heal in ways nobody else has attempted to. Let me add here - Joseph Anderson is not the only toxic person to dip into the Souls community and stir us up, doing damage beyond his imagination and obviously not caring about what he's doing. He just happened to be the subject of this video. However, thank you for directly calling him toxic. Because that's what he is. A few weeks ago my brother actually stopped talking to me because I didn't share his opinion on Elden Ring with him. I pleaded to him for us to not talk about the game anymore because it's not healthy for our relationship and frankly, having a falling out over a video game in your 30s is very, VERY wrong. Yet here we are, he hasn't responded to any of my attempts to reach to him since June 30th. I've been very restless ever since. I hate that this happened and don't think it's justified we're not talking anymore. This also reminds me of that one special individual who is trying to sue From Soft. Discussion and critique of this game has got way out of hand and blown WAY out of proportion for what it is. Elden Ring is my favourite thing ever. Not just game. It's just my favourite pass time, no matter how I'm engaging with it. STILL, I'm self aware enough to recognize it's not worth hurting people over and as you presented at the end of your video, Anderson genuinely hurt someone over a video review. It is true the other person should not have taken it to heart that much since they don't know Anderson personally but still, it was very wrong. For anybody interested about the argument my brother and I had; he basically demanded an easy mode for the game. When I explained to him why I thought the game didn't need an easy mode he doubled down and out right demanded a god mode be implemented into the game. He then called me "emotionally cold" and "misanthropic" (not paraphrasing, his actual words) for not wanting a god mode in the game. I tried to stay calm and explain to him that it's not okay for him to call me names over a different opinion. At some point I told him to not get emotional over our debate (which always achieves the exact opposite, I know that but I was getting angry as well), after which he started yelling at me. I hung up on him when he screamed at me. We haven't talked since. tldr: Great video. Please make more like this. You're helping people emotionally.

8:39 I feel like this is a slightly disingenuous misconstruction of what he is actually referring to. I don’t think he’s referring to people saying he sucks. He’s probably referring to the general idea of people hijacking conversations with stuff like “skill issue” and “git gud” with the sole intention of preventing discussion from happening. It’s like people having a problem with people constantly calling other people nahzis or libtards and whatnot. It’s not about the nature of calling out people for bad behavior, it’s about how such terminology is often used in a deliberate attempt to shut down conversation and debate. Buzzwords basically, an excuse to try and delegitimize discussion with the idea of “well if you are a nazhi/libtard/need to git gud, I don’t HAVE to engage with what you are saying because you are OBVIOUSLY in the wrong”. It’s an attempt of resolving responsibility on the part of the people engaging with the media. Such terminology rarely comes from a place of an actual desire to discuss a topic in good faith. There is a difference between deliberating on why someone could be incorrect due to a lack of knowledge and skill and just saying “skill issue” as a shutdown response in an attempt to silence and discard what someone has to say. Just like you iterate in the video; perception is reality and just like how critique can warp the perception of those who watch it, the same can be said about people who open up the comment section/a discussion board and see hoards of “skill issue” and nothing else to add. Their perception of the media has been warped by the machinations of others, regardless of the merit of the media being discussed. You might have engaged with this point more later on but I thought I’d give my thoughts now as you brought up and discussed this.

You're 100% right about this, Joe says, minutes later in the same video, that he brings this up because "git gud" discourages criticism and he wants people to be able to criticize the game. It's definitely a misrepresentation, whether is disingenuous or a misunderstanding I'm not sure. Same with the "Denmark is the capital of Malaysia" thing, it's clearly different than saying "Elden Ring is a good game" because one of them is objectively false and the other is something that cannot be measured in any objective way. In his ER video he suggests (a) a posture bar, (b) randomized dungeons, (c) passive stat increases for completing a dungeon, among many others. These are BAD suggestions. He analyzes a problem he has with the game and then comes up with a solution that took him all of 5 seconds to think of and that he is smart enough to be able to tell immediately is not gonna end well. It's so funny to me how he attempts to "constructively critique" actual game designers but does it in the most hamfisted way possible, by providing design that he himself would probably tear apart if it wasn't him making that suggestion.

I spent 4 years practicing the martial art Aikido and a big principal is learning self control. For instance Aikdo rarely initiates attacks and usually waits for an opponent to attack first, so that the Aikidoka can counter attack. Aikido starts out very contrived and waits to show you the difficult techniques only after you have learned well how to protect yourself from taking falls, for example. However eventually you are fighting free form against multiple people at once and feeling somewhat familiar with the process. This is because you learn everything from example, repetition and trial and error. You practice the same move thousands of times with people of every shape and size. You also learn in very practical and satisfying ways. I say all of this becuase there is something very Aikdio goign on in Dark souls games and it is even down to the freedom of movement. However it's more than than just the controls, it's also in the very spirit of the game. We had an old saying in the dojo, every interaction with another person you teach them a little about how to interact with you and they teach you how to interact with them. If you are not learning from your expereinces, if you are rejecting reality that is in front of your face because it does not fit your world view, then you are doing yourself a disservice let alone other people. I 100% agree with your takes on JA and I have had issues with him in the past and not just with his takes. He also dones on with a certain lack of enthusiasm. Maybe it's his reading style but he speaks like he thinks that he does not need to sell his ideas to the listener. Rather he seems to think that his opinion is intrinsicly valueable and worth everyone's time from the jump. More to the point he seems to liek the word, objective, more than anyone has any right to. Your video in contrast has made meaningful point after meaningful point and has brought up supporitng evidence reliably and without unnessary imbelishment. Your conversation about rewards was very interesting. One review of SotE I watched was from a smaller creator, I can't remember their name, but I do remember some of their comments in regard to complaints about areas like Cerulean Coast and Charo's Hidden Grave. They suggested that we, as players familiar with open world games, often interpret emptier areas as automatically being 'bad'. We're used to the general norm of open worlds being cluttered and constantly giving us things to do and find, that an area deciding to use open space in a possibly more poignant sense registers as poorly made or having nothing to find. It really struck a chord with me, as has your video. I've been an ardent defender of the Consecrated Snowfield for this very reason. Sometimes it's just the atmosphere, the immersion of a wide-open yet well-hidden space that acts as its own reward. I think it's fine to critique the more tangible rewards, of course. But I also think sometimes it's better to ask 'what is this area trying to do/make me feel?' as opposed to 'what does this area have that can personally benefit me?'

And yet, it had that hypocritically toxic "cult-like" comment. Before anyone could tell him their opinion on his video or just generally share their own experiences with the game, he drops that bombshell, probably to preemptively stave off any criticism. Or he just hated his experience so much that he genuinely believed that those who enjoyed it were blind or From worshippers, compounded by his later statement of ,"I dare you to tell me you enjoyed this expansion in your first run". 11:04 I question when you're starting to count the frames for the attack. I have not meticulously combed through Godrick's attack animations, so I may be wrong here, but it looks to me like Godrick is still in his recovery animation when you start counting. The recovery animation brings him from the attack he just finished back to a neutral animation state, where he then moves into the storm assault move. The main reason I believe this is because of how the movement arcs change. He's bringing his arm back up and then suddenly he switches to a new arc and the axe snaps down. Unless that return to neutral animation is distinct from any other attack, I would consider the snap to be the start of the attack, which is what I assume Joe using as well.
@GredGlintstone

I'll agree with you that there is subjectivity in when you start counting the frames but if you start counting from where Joseph says (less than 20) he's clearly not at the beginning of the move. It's a real stretch to say that. You can see yourself by pressing "," and "." to move frame by frame on the video. *edit* to be clear: I'm counting the frames from where the footage loops. That's when I think the move starts. There's leeway for sure but I don't think you can say less than 20.

I probably need to do the fight again to come to a conclusion there. At the very least, I can see that an empirical measurement like frame data should be clearly backed up with an example (start/end points), which Joe doesn't do here. And if he didn't actually measure it, then it's a subjective assessment masquerading as an objective one.

It looks weird because he flinches from an attack and is turning around when he uses the move, but the real start of the attack is when he raises his left arm. That's what you're supposed to use to tell when he's using the attack, which becomes much more obvious in Phase 2 because of how the dragon head moves. He starts raising his ax slightly later, which I think is why he and others think the attack is unreachable: they look at his axe but ignore his arm.

thank you for this video! I'm someone who generally enjoys every game i play, i tend to forget about roadblocks that frustrated me because i just really like exploring this strange virtual world, and the reward of overcoming a challenge quickly erases the agony of the struggle to do so. I didn't have a particularly hard time with elden ring or shadow of the erdtree (or any souls game for that matter), mostly because i like exploring and fighting basic enemies so much that I'm always significantly overleveled, so I didn't have a particularly rough go at the game. at the same time, I'm not so attached to this game that I'm unwilling to hear someone vent their frustrations about it, and usually I'll nod in agreement and be like "yeah, that part did kinda suck", and even when I don't agree with them, i use that as a chance to exercise my empathy and just try to see it from their perspective. but for some reason every single feeble king video I've ever watched has kinda rubbed me the wrong way. when he "criticized" DS2, and then took it back and said that actually vanilla DS2 is great and scholar of the first sin ruined it, basically every justification he gave was just not true according to those games as i experienced them. i don't remember specifics because it was a few months ago, but i remember at the time thinking that it felt like he had already come to his conclusion beforehand, and the entire video was filled with post-hoc rationalizations, he was just looking for reasons to justify what he already wanted to believe. i am willing to bet $100 that he watched legend of xander's video about how scholar of the first sin ruined DS2 and then decided to make his own. the weird statements that just didn't match my experiences were not even like his opinion was that vanilla was fun and scholar was not (I've played both, they're both fine games, i kinda prefer scholar), but he was wrong about basic things like enemy and item placement, how many "gank fights" and unavoidable ambushes there are (vanilla has significantly more geographical aggro triggers linked to groups of 3+ enemies, I don't think there's a single one in scholar that aggros more than 3), the difficulty curve (I'm pretty sure if there was an objective way to measure a difficulty curve, scholar's would be significantly better than vanilla's), leveling up to me, it felt like he didn't even pay attention to the game when he was playing it? and I've never gotten that kind of impression from a "critique" before, that's a first for me. and then with his elden ring dlc thing, it was really painful to watch, it just kept making me cringe, like "all i got was a cookbook", like first off, that's just not true, but secondly, consumables are some of the most fun items in this game, you're really telling me you haven't like trolled an enemy camp by shooting a pumpkin head with a bewitching branch? or threw a sleep pot at a runebear to grab a nearby item? or crafted some ironjar aromatics and tried to beat rykard without the serpent hunter? do you even have fun in this game? what do you do when you open elden ring on your computer? he took two hours to tell me that he sees elden ring as a boss rush, this vast open world with beautiful vistas, littered with different types of enemies and critters, regional flora and setdressing, ancient ruins, that's all just window dressing that's standing between him and the next fog gate, and whenever I don't agree with a criticism i try my best to exercise my empathy and see it from their perspective, but that's just so radically opposed to the way i see the game that it made me physically uncomfortable to even try sympathizing with him. him repeatedly saying that smithing stones, spirit ashes, cookbooks, etc. were all just filler was just so crazy to me, the man doesn't engage with like 75% of the game's content or actually use any of the unique material rewards it gives him, and then complains about there not being any unique rewards. like buddy, you're staring at it, that demi-human yosh spirit ash, you just fought that guy, that dude goes so hard, you don't wanna try fighting alongside him? that sounds so fun to just have this crazy acrobatic swordsman at your disposal whenever you see the blue monument on the side of the screen (which is like at least hundreds of overworld locations, not just for boss fights) but no, the challenge runners have decided that spirit ashes are cheating, magic is lame, incantations are lame, bows and crossbows are lame, a macho man like me is only allowed to be naked and wield a large bonking stick, and since you can't upgrade my bonking stick past level 25 because it would mess up the NG+ scaling, and since I don't need anything but my bonking stick, there is no reward that can satisfy me, aside from maybe a new stick with 30% more bonk. there's like a dozen new armor sets, like 100+ new weapons, 50+ new spells, 10+ new spirit ashes, if you don't find any of that content interesting my only conclusion is that you are a deeply uncreative person who feels compelled to prove something and abide by the naked bonking man ruleset. it feels really similar to the men who feel a deep compulsion to perform masculinity, drink a beer they don't like, order wings that are too spicy for them to actually enjoy, buy a lifted pickup truck despite not having anything to tow, coastal suburbanite cosplaying as a redneck, you know what I'm talking about, the guys who are deeply offended at any insinuation that they might be homosexual, it's like... buddy, it's 2024, lighten up, drop the act. nobody will think less of you, it takes so much less work to stop fronting like this, try a faith build, maybe use some volcano pots, they're actually pretty fun to mess around with. we're all just playing games to get some entertainment, drop the "elite gamer" nonsense and bring some variety back into your joyless life.

I could never put my thoughts about Joseph Anderson in particular into words. This video has the closest I think I can get to really interpreting those thoughts. I kind of liked his content, but something was always… off about how I perceived him, like there was something either not genuine or *too* genuine about his content. Now I realize it wasn’t about being genuine; it was about being highly opinionated and wanting validation for those opinions. Can’t say I knew much about the other content creators in this video before I watched, though, but I get the idea I would have felt similarly towards them. Great deconstruction, great critique.

18:25 Oh my god I’ve been saying this for sooooo long. Its so sad to see people only look at things from a purely gameplay angle and ignore all of the lore, atmosphere and vibe that oozes from a lot of the areas, especially areas that typically don’t have much going for them gameplay wise. For me, even if an area doesn’t have much to do gameplay wise or gives me something that Isn’t useful for my build, there is still so much to enjoy in the world and what it means for the lore and just how it looks that makes it impossible first me to truly feel dissatisfied. People need to understand that an area or a moment is so much more than a gameplay thing. The art, nuggets of story and vibes are just as important

@@GredGlintstone at that point i wouldn’t even call it “empty” I’d call it more uneventful, but i don’t mean it in a bad way because i feel like Charos and Cerulean coast are supposed to be just that. Its full of enemies that i feel don’t even want to fight in the first place. Its a serene and somewhat untouched place compared to Gravesight and Scadu altus, which on the other hand is full if death and the aftermath of a gruesome war. The coastal areas along with hinterlands feel like they’re a breath if fresh air from the gloomy war torn areas before them, makes you forget about the crusade that happened for a moment. I remember when i beat Promised Consort at level 1 after roughly 600 deaths pre patch, it was extremely punishing and i was losing my mind. When i beat it at long last, first thing i did was warp to Cerulean coast, change it to night and just sat there and took it in. An area that is bland and boring wouldn’t make me come back to it like this, the vibe and atmosphere make it so much more. From a similar angle, hearing people call the Leda team fight a bad gank fight is one of the most crazy things I've heard. For me, it was an amazing battle, especially with Ansbach and Thiollier. It was what all the NPC's storylines were leading to. Was the gameplay of it good? I have no idea. I was too busy enjoying Thiollier forgiving me and hearing that he now has a new master, St. Trina. I was so shocked to see him there, I thought he had truly given up on life, so seeing him help me out felt so good.

Only gripe with the vid is the slight misrepresentation of Matthew's vid (lost art of demon Souls) but overall a much needed video. It's so, so hard to find good video game commentary and critique. Everyone is rage-baiting and throwing out fancy terms with zero grasp on what they mean.

It's why I bring it up because people always use the vid as evidence that the souls series has gotten boring but that's not what Matthew is arguing. I actually really agree with Matthew in that video for the most part. But really appreciate the nice words again. The fancy terms is a big one. I made sure to show my definitions. Sorry in advance for yapping so much. Thank you in advance if you read the whole thing. When Joe compared Bethesda and FromSoft, and after watching your video, I realized something. Joe said that when Skyrim came out that it was so popular that people were afraid to critique or challenge them, leading to Fallout 4 disappointing, 76 being buggy, and Starfield being disliked overall. Joe said it was because of the community not critiquing lead Bethesda to make worse and worse quality games, and then saying Elden Ring is From's version of Skyrim and will lead to a similar fate. How shitty of a mood do you have to be in to think that what Joe clearly says is a great game and one he loves, and his outlook on the company is them eventually failing and becoming a shell of its former self? The games are clearly not shit, unlike launch day F76 or Starfield. Ironically, FromSoft games are the ones with the louder negative and toxic RU-vidrs and influencers, yet FromSoft continues to make solid game/experience after solid game/experience. But since the toxic spewing shit is getting so loud that whole sections of the internet are ignoring FromSoft games because a popular person said so, it might actually lead to a loss of sales or more hostility towards the game. The game is already niche, and yeah I know Elden Ring sold over 20 million copies it is now pretty mainstream, but that doesn’t mean something that is super successful can always recreate exactly what they did to become mainstream in the first place. Why do you think Dark Souls 1 2 and 3 are all so different, or that Bloodborne or Sekiro exist? Because they wanted to innovate and make an interesting and fun and varied experience. Every single time there was a lot of success (yes even with Dark Souls 2). But those successes get shuffled into a corner, never to be seen in these critiques the toxic reviewers make. Gled you are so right on that in those guys' videos they barely ever take the time to appreciate what the game does right or innovates. The amazing level design, music, interesting weapon arts and buffet of options that wasn’t there in the last game which adds immense amounts of replayability and options (something you want in an RPG), is ignored because Messmer killed me because I refused to play the game like an RPG and refused to try different things. They take the joke of Dark Souls 3 being a glorified boss rush game and actually believe in that shit and want the games to be like that. I think Feeble King has played too many Soul Level 1 runs and that overtook his mind and distorted his view of what these games truly are. He can certainly like those challenge runs, but that’s what they are, “Challenge Runs”, not how the game is actually supposed to be played, aka whatever you want it is an RPG. I think Elden Ring having as many viable options as it has for many different play styles goes to show the love and care put into it by FromSoft. And also those guys never talk about using status build-up as a strategy. IT IS SUCH GOOD ADVICE THO. I had no clue about the Radahn scarlet rot thing, and that can really help with my go (at least when I get to that point lol). Not everyone is like you, Joe, Feeble. Not everyone uses double colossal great swords and that exclusively, and not everyone wants to play Soul Level 1 all the time and treat the game as a boss rush. I think most fans of the series want a unique experience that most game companies do not make because it is so different from the norm because it actually takes time to learn things throughout the whole game. There is no “get my reward for participating” button, there is only time dedicated to exploring, experimenting strats and builds and weapons, taking in the sights, talking to NPC’s either because they have tips or they’re just good characters, etc etc etc. FromSoft made a game stuffed to the fucking brim full of what people have been asking for, yet they still bite the hand that feeds them. I don’t know what FromSoft is like internally, but maybe because the toxic people have spread their shit so much that it could potentially cause FromSoft to crack and make their next game have an Easy Mode. OH THE HORROR! FromSoft doesn’t want to make easy games. Me and millions of fans don’t want to play an easy FromSoft game. First off, stop treating the public so poorly (looking at you Joe, you told that one fan to fuck off over nothing), and stop telling them that your opinion on the game is right, because lets be real, a lot of people don’t think for themselves. It could lead to people like Joe and Feeble to not even make reviews on future FromSoft games because of their toxic views potentially lead to no more of the games at all because of mass mob mentality. They can’t think far enough ahead that they could lead to not being able to get games they enjoy anymore due to being negative bastards. My fingers hurt typing so much. Gled, your video was an absolute banger. I am glad I started watching your videos because it helps me to take a deeper look into myself and understand others as well. I also was inspired by your last video about Gamer Rage so much that I beat Dark Souls 3 and its DLC with experimentation and different weapons. Ngl I always love a quality build, strength and dexterity combined are super fun for me. And now I have a deeper appreciation for people who DON’T play like I do! I can’t wait to play Elden Ring because the magic looks so fun in that game. Videos like these are the actual ones that build decent communities and encourage new experiences and discussions that are much more positive and healthy for the mind and well being. Of course, there is always a time and place for criticism on bad parts of a game, or anything really. But just like with praising something over and over again it starts to lose its meaning, calling something shit over and over again just leads to disdain over everything. GG Gled you’re the goat.

It was the core reason why I wanted to make this. Especially as it came out right after Feeble's original DLC critique. Since the release we've had review bombing, constant negative reviews from internet critics, and a really sour tone in the discussion around this game. Which is great! It's so insane to me to follow all of that up and make the argument that the toxicity in the community is from the people defending it. Wild. My 2 cents on one point in the video about exploring new weapons and consumables. I wish I could use all the different weapons in elden ring, but I'm not willing run around farming a ton of smithing stones. I barely have enough stones for 2-3 fully upgraded weapons in my playthrough. I just wish you could refund your smithing stones somehow (like how respeccing stats work). That's why 99% of weapons I get go unused. For consumables, I have an aversion to using consumable items ever. This is a me problem I admit, but I bet a lot of people have this same problem. Estus flask is a great solution to the infinite healing issue in other games, but I always wonder why they didn't do the same for pots or other consumables. Just make all those cookbook items rechargable at bonfires, and I'd be way more willing to use them.

The point about the weapons hits me hard because I found myself having this issue with Bloodborne. After I was close to the end I saw the cane and I thought it was so cool how it turned into a whip but I thought "I cant use it im too far on the game to change weapons" but instead of stopping I just added it to use and holy shit its amazing and it was literally so easy to level it up to give good damage, people forgot that we dont need to always go for "the optimal strategy" and sometimes its about fun and doing what you think its cool. As for the "Glazing" argument, we live in deeply cynical times. People are so deep in irony and cynicism that when someone seems to just straight up enjoy something it's like we can't take it... People are so used to watching hate videos and stuff and they are entertaining but I think people are so deep that "this or that is no masterpiece" way of thinking that they see someone enjoying something fully as them blindly accepting everything.

Videos like yours are bound to happen, it's why this trend of RU-vidr "critique" videos have almost become too ragebait-y, too negative & are there mostly for engagement farming, I remember people were saying media critic review are bad & all (yet they follow them), they used to say "make up your mind, everyone has opinions" and when they trashed media critics, now they wanna find someone else to tell them what their opinions will be for a said game, and sadly. I think a game like Elden Ring with its gargantuan success, its massive cultural impact in gaming, plus its huge departure from the typical From Software Souls game on many fundamental aspects plus RU-vid engagement & this questionable at best & pitiful at worst trend which is the "video game CRITIQUE" videos on RU-vid have destroyed the discussions around games like Elden Ring, Zelda TOTK, and God help us when GTA VI releases, we'll see even more grift, misinformation & useless drivel. These long-form pseudo-essayist misinformation-filled critique videos that muddy the true picture are what's making discussing these games insufferable, this is the plague that follows every FromSoft game I guess, guys like Demodcracy, Joseph Anderson & Feeble King have been literally spreading misinformation just because they felt insulted by Elden Ring & didn't want to learn the bosses' mechanics, which has literally been the point of every game FromSoft has released, there must be something new to challenge, something more exciting & fulfilling than in the past, and I think Sekiro, Armored Core 6 & Elden Ring achieve that the best honestly, it's time for some people to crawl out of their preconceived notions & begin to evolve just like how From Software have been evolving with each game they release, if it was Joseph's or Demoscracy's way, we'd still wait for Dark Souls 3 to release & be the same slow methodical outdated combat in 2024 lol, Joseph's 1st critique video was the catalyst of misinformation, kept saying stuff like bosses have unavoidable attacks, unreactable attacks, "breaking the rules" whatever the heck that means & so many other drivel it was crazy. They're very similar to RU-vid commentary channels where their sole purpose is to criticize & hate other RU-vid channels, and they get a lot of views, and what better game to criticize than Elden Ring? The game that has made a strong cultural impact, one that is very famous for its once in a decade experience & quality, while also being hard as nails, engagement farming for free, it’s always been a cycle for FromSoft games especially since Sekiro, Sekiro got destroyed for like 2 years because it was an “unfair” game somehow, but then people looked back fondly about it now lol & they were completely wrong about it. Armored Core 6 got destroyed to the point FromSoft was pressured to nerf the 1st main boss (Balteus) & many others sadly, Balteus is like the Margit of AC6, it’s really a bad trend where people feel entitled to completing any game without putting much thought & effort. It’s what separates FromSoft games from the rest, is that you have to be earnest & try hard lol.

Also you're wrong about Nietszche, he wasn't a nihilist, he hated nihilism, his great life-long project was articulating the catastrophe that was nihilism in 19th Century Europe. He believed profoundly that life was and is meaningful, and that we have almost a moral duty to ourselves to be true to ourselves, so that our loves could be meaningful. Your whole idea about him believing life was innately meaningless and that it becomes meaningful in self-overcoming is totally anathema, really, to what nietszche articulated throughout his works. I recommend reading anything from his middle period, eg the gay science, to get a better idea of what he really believed. You're sort of correct when you say that Nietszche said that suffering creates meaning, but what he tended to say was actually that it made us more *interesting*. Nietszche believed that self-inflicted suffering was a major phase in the history of our psychological development, and associated it with Christianity. The geneaology of morality expounds on this.
