The Lost Pond an Autumn Walk in Epping Forest - John Rogers walks
Starting down by Lopping Hall in Loughton we enter the forest via Forest Road and walk beside the gentle waters of the Loughton Brook. The forest is full of fungi in autumn. E.N Buxton noted that there were no less than 600 species of large fungi in Epping Forest. From Baldwins Pond we follow the Clay Road to near the top where we head through the trees to the Lost Pond. Officially known as Blackweir Pond, it was given the name of Lost Pond by J.A Brimble and the name somehow seems to have stuck. Brimble notes how this part of the forest was a favourite haunt of the sculptor Jacob Epstein and how he saw him around these parts sat at this easel. He records one occassion by the Lost Pond where Brimble told the scupltor how the Lost Pond got its name.
Our walk continues over Goldings Hill then down to Debden Green and along Debden Lane to Theydon Bois station.

My first visit to your walks, recommended by an old mate. We are old Debden boys, re-housed on the estate in the 50s from a bombed London. The forest and the River Roding were our playgrounds. Autumn is probably the best time of year, simply for the variety of colours. But anytime to visit will be a delight. Loughton Brook is my next visit. Thank you, John, you brought back wonderful memories.

🌳 The restorative and invigorating energy of and in the forests! People that understand that , those are my kind of folks! Great to hear our old tribal leaders get a mention....Catavalanus was the chief captured by Rome and ended up giving a speech that earned him a new lease on life instead of his ending then as the Romans had planned...Either way, mentioning the old tribes as you stroll along really gives the video some magic....

Great video John. Epping Forest is like a piece of Middle Earth near London. Fungi communicating is fascinating like the Midwich Cuckoos in which the children of the damned had a collective intelligence-maybe fungi have too.

Loughton was my home town for many years and the Forest has always been a very special place for my family. The major trees.....Oak, Beech, Silver Birch and Hornbeams produce a great forest floor, with many parts really red through the winter, and of course it is really well cared for and maintained.......in the sunshine it is really magical. When surrounded by beeches it is like being in a cathedral. I really enjoy your Walks videos John.....thank you so much.

I’m very lucky to live right next to Epping Forest in Loughton and I walk in it every day. The best parts of the forest are off the main paths into the middle of the forest following the beaten down mini paths where you are the only person walking about and if you are very lucky and quiet you may see fallow deer.

We enjoyed your video about the Lost Pond, especially as we had visited just the week before. Judging by the number of people there now, it is no longer 'lost'! Like you in some of your videos, we do frequently get lost in the Forest, even with a map. It is reassuring to know we are not the only ones. That part of the Forest in Loughton is our favourite, especially with all the ponds to discover there. We look forward to more videos from you about the ponds you have not already featured. P.S. We were disappointed you didn't feature the amazing 1,000 year old tree, a beech coppard, near the Lost Pond.

I was soooo lucky to have been born/raised in Walthamstow. Lots of rivers and fields and of course the forest. The fields along the Lea.. What we kept our ponies for free.. On waterboard land. And the rides along the Lea or cut along the ching path.. Behind old Walthamstow dog track. Up into Highams Park. We would go 1 way and a full day later come back the other. With sherbert and empty bottle. (to make drinks when we got to horse rest and tap water at.. Mainly pub or often petrol station🙄🤔🤣🤣. A jam sandwich and in often scrumping for fruit. Apples blackberries pears... How lucky I and my children have been... Fields all built on now days.

I have fished the lost pond a number of times in the past few years and I'm always amazed at some of the (very) small carp I pull out of such an inconspicuous piece of water. Also, a small bit of trivia for you as well if you were not already aware, there is a small wooden bridge that cross the Loughton Brook between Forest Road and Balwins Pond which was actually the filming location for the famous Black Knight scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

@@JohnRogersWalks Haha that's a funny coincidence. If you go to Google Maps and zoom in around that area there is actually a marker which shows the approximate location of the bridge.
