The more I watch videos like this, the more I realise Elizabeth I was not a very nice person, sometimes even heartless. I imagine she took after her father.
Because only Elizabeth kept her imprisoned (not even an actual prison) and somehow could came back from dead years after her own death and put her in the final prison which she never leaves, right?
She was both her father's and her mother's mini-me in some ways. Her treatment of former close friend and personal attendant Lettie Knollys was quite petty when it was Robert Dudley she was really hurt by. But also, she was pretty limited in her choices regarding extended family. They would've attempted a coup to toss her off the throne if they'd thought for a moment they'd get away with it. Many, many people wanted Queen E1 dead for religious reasons and the Darnleys whom Arbella married into were not only possible claimants but firmly allied to the Catholic cause as well as related to Mary, Queen of Scots. It was red flags waving madly at Elizabeth, who could certainly be an angry bull (cow?) when provoked. It's not like they wouldn't have made sure she would've been killed in the Tower or worse, offered to the Inquisition for one of their bonfires. There was a lot for a rival family to gain in taking the Crown. So much would've gone awry in England if Elizabeth fell, to start with, the loss of the uneasy truce between sects. The economy probably would've tanked and England probably would've become a French province eventually. Absolute disaster for the average English folks, certainly. It's why Mary 1 had to kill poor Jane Grey, just in reverse of Protestant on Catholic violence. Too much stood to be lost if she lost control. It was a really brutal time and she didn't like showing any "womanly weakness" like, ya know, mercy. She had nasty choices to make between awful and abysmal with frenemies waiting everywhere for her to make a tiny mistake. I think anyone would get mean under that kind of stress.

When Mary, Queen of Scots turned up unannounced in her kingdom Elizabeth was affronted and furious that her cousin would do such a act that Elizabeth never thought Mary would do. She quickly locked her up so that Mary wouldnt escape to France. With Arbella she was utterly ruthless. Send her back to Bess of Hardwick! Elizaabeth was a hard woman yet she went through lots of hard times from her birth. She clawed her way to the throne and it was a heck of a battle for her. She had a temper exactly like her father, Henry VIII.😢
Yeah, Elizabeth I becomes a very difficult figure when you peel away the layers of propaganda around her. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely still respect what Elizabeth did to remain queen, and how she ran her country. And I have sympathy for her (and Mary) for how they were treated by their father, and I imagine a lot of that experience shaped who they both became. But then other decisions show she allowed paranoia and jealousy to rule over other people's lives, and that makes her not a very nice person in herself. I think all the Tudor children took after their father in some ways, and the whole family had problems, certainly.
Poor Arbella. My heart goes out to her. I tip my hat to her for trying so hard to change her position in life, despite her lack of resources or power. Very admirable in many ways.
Every so often, when we find democracy, the rights of the individual over the state, civil liberties to be messy, stories like this remind us of what the enlightenment was about. Never forget. Accept others so we are able to live in peace.
Superb as always, Arbella never knew true happiness, she deserved more, James treated her badly and to lock her in the tower was cruel even when she was ill he ignored her pleas for freedom, sadly freedom came for arbella the moment of her death the only time she became free.
James VI betrayed his own mother and sovereign Queen Mary I of Scotland and did nothing to stop Elizabeth Tudor from murdering her. He was not a nice person when it came to family
Her ambitious maternal grandmother Bess of Hardwick started everything she wanted royalty in her family that ugly ambition for the throne spoiled Arbella s life since she was born until the last day of her life

Elizabeth was a great queen, but damn, when she didn't like you, she made sure that you and your family knew it. In this case, her ire was more for Arbella's parents, but she very much showed her mean streak with Arbella, too. Poor little girl.
Elizabeth betrayed her military and put her country in a financial crisis not to mention religious intolerance and the practice of slavery which makes her one of the worst queens of england .
Her life may have had many comforts when she was young , not having her parents throughout that life was a sad time for her and she was pushed from pillar to post by relatives thinking they had her best interests at heart when all she wanted was the love a good marriage from the right man could have given her. Alas all those who surrounded her only had their own interests in mind and they treated her very badly . Thank you for a great story on the life of Arbella Stuart/ Stewart i found it most interesting.
As a scot the more i hear about James the 6th the more I actually just think he's an awful person, totally different to how he's portrayed in school, same with QE1 but for different reasons.
QE1 oversaw his upbringing. It may not have been entirely his fault. After all, he was ripped away from his mother at a tender age. It doesn't excuse him, but it's reason to ask God's mercy on his soul. For that matter, Elizabeth 1 wasn't entirely responsible, considering her father's maltreatment of both of his daughters, and pitting them against one another since Elizabeth's infancy. But again, it's no excuse for crimes committed, it's only reason to ask God's mercy on her soul.
Actually James Douglas and Thomas Fowler did Arabella dirty. Without those two men robbing her, she would have had wealth enough to take care of herself . After those two men robbed Arabella, Elizabeth Gave Arabella an annuity 🤷♀️..she even suggested a husband for Arabella,though that didn't happen because Arabella's mother stopped it. ( Arabella's mother being Catholic and Elizabeth Protestant,as well as the prospective husband) The men and Arabella's mother failed her miserably. Also, later on, it was silly to separate Arabella and her Husband William 🙄 James did that. If they just would have been left to be happy everything would have been fine.
True personal feelings were a luxury and dangerous, emotional attachment perceived at Court as a weakness in a reigning royal, something to be exploited, Elizabeth and James would never allow themselves. Elizabeth's mother's fate always paramount in her mind.
Funny thing... There's a town in Western New York called Clarence, after the extinct duchy. It was founded following the American Revolution, as a way station for travelers heading to Buffalo on Lake Erie, seeking to make their fortune in trade. There's a pioneer cemetery in the town, where Revolutionary War veterans and veterans of the War of 1812 are buried. It's so interesting because the Americans rejected the establishment of nobility and monarchy. I've always wondered what inspired the townsfolk to adopt the name of Clarence, after the duchy, which was already extinct by the time the town was founded.
When i was younger i greatly admired QE1. I thought she was a badass. But the more i learn about how she treated those around her my admiration dwindles. Shes still amazing in her own right but boy did she make mistakes. If she had only thought about the future of the crown. But i guess if things had gone a different way we wouldn't have the royal family we have today. Love your work. Cant wait for the next one.

Aww, thank you, that means a lot. 😊 It's an awful thing, but the older one gets, the more you get used to death - bit morbid, but as a historian, it gives me an appreciation for the way people in the past, surrounded far more than us by death, coped with it.

I see here human being used as a chattel, a means to an ends, and expression of others' personal ideals and ideas, a path to revenge on others, a cash cow, a prospect, a temptation and most of all a prize, yet never, it seems, as a human being with their own ideals or hopes. I didn't see it that way, but you're absolutely right! She was used only as a commodity no matter what happened to her. In the end, I suppose poor Arbella was therefore just trying to feel 'human' in some way with love, affection, and the closeness of others.

"knew" Bathsheba again, had Solomon and everything was advocated again, price paid. Are you saying the Bible isn't advocating for Yahweh's own demands and laws? Were those writers lying about it all? How is Arabella's treatment as a pawn in a game not comparable? My statement stands, it's Biblical. If not we'll call it Homeric. Much of a muchness.
I’m so excited to hear your break down her story. I don’t know much about her except her unfortunate end. I love your narration and explanations of some obscure people or people the writers of history would like you to forget.

Its amazes me how intertwined the Scots and English royal families were during the medieval and renaissance periods, from Saint Margaret of Wessex and Malcolm III to Matilda/Edith queen of England and her daughter Matilda, then to Margaret Tudor and James IV To poor Arbella Stuart and everyone in-between known and unknown. For two countries that were constantly at each others throats they love to share a bed now and again 🦁❤🦄 😂

Ours is all over the place; sunny in the morning, torrential rain in the afternoon, wind in the evening...we're only missing snow! 😂 Oooh....it's so tough picking my favourite person from the Tudor era. I have a ton I definitely don't like (😅!), but I think my favourite is probably Anne of Cleves. She was such a chilled out, kind lady, no matter what happened to her, and to top it off she was really smart. I reckon I would have liked hanging out at her manor house and helping her cook something up in her specially-built kitchen, haha.

Arabella Stuart did indeed have a very tragic life her destiny dictated by others. But she was not the rightful heir to the English throne. James VI/I was the rightful heir as his mother, Mary Queen of Scots claim, was superior to Elizabeth, who was, in fact, illegitimate James claim was superior. Equally, Arabella was in face a second cousin of Mary Queen of Scots and not her niece',ehich was only by marriage. Queen Mary had not written sny letter's conspiring agaibst Elizabeth the so called evidence was fabricated abd putbin by Phellepes under instructions ftom Walsingham, cecil and with Elizabeth's knowledge. There is no evidence that Queen Mary left the English claim to Phillip of Spain .
How is Arabella a "lost queen?" Mary, Queen of Scots had a legitimate heir, and he was the most appropriate heir to the English throne after Elizabeth's death. I'm no fan of James, but Arabella had no claim to any throne that superceded his.
I watched another documentary which states what a misogynist king James was. I was silly not to just let William and Arabella stay married and happy and just let them live a wonderful life.
Question: 1. Why was James so eager to leave Scotland?! What was going on politically, socially in Scotland to make James run? 2. If there was another heir Arbella born in England why wouldn’t the government accept her clim to the Throne? Britain enjoyed such success under Queen Elizabeth 1 they would’ve enjoyed the same amount of success, most likely under Arbelle as Queen why was there this push to install James
Porphyria my bum. She was reacting to a completely abnormal situation. She was brought up to be a wife & mother in charge of a large household and estate. She was highly educated and cultured. You then keep her in the country in utter boredom for YEARS, stifled and denied the permission to marry. Yup, porphyria. I think she was a saint.
I agree, although porphyria has been put forward as a theory (and can't be discounted entirely) it was almost certainly other things that contributed to Arbella's mental state. I think the story of how she tried to allow herself to be 'kidnapped' says an awful lot.
The 'realistic' ones are made with Midjourney AI, and if I have an actual portrait to work from, I use that as the base for the images. It's not perfect, but it helps when there's no/few images of a historical person. 😊
For the question, I’m copying myself lol, since I asked History Calling this yesterday, but what are your favourite bands? For me the absolute favourites are Queen and ABBA, I had proper obsessions with the both of them when I was 12/13 and 8/9, respectively, and I’ve been loving The Beatles recently. (honourable mentions to Scorpions and Extreme, the latter of whom gave such a good concert I’m developing an obsession like that I did with ABBA and Queen :)
Oooh.......I've got way too many to list. 😂😂😂 I lean more towards certain genres than others, but I've got really eclectic taste lol. My favourites at the moment are Leprous (Norweigan prog-metal band, I love love love them because their sound changes every album), Voyager, a band called Nini Music (Korean folk-music mixed with metal), some stuff by The Andrews Sisters (I said it was eclectic!), and Two Steps From Hell (who despite sounding like a death metal band, in fact create very beautiful 'epic music' which is often used in many films and TV series, good to listen to when you want sound without lyrics). And I know you asked about bands, but to highlight how weird my favourite playlist is, I've also got lots of older songs on there from the 50s/60s era, or inspired by it, (and probably reveal how much a fan I am of the Fallout games, haha), such as Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, The Inkspots, Wanda Jackson, Amy Winehouse, and Frank Sinatra. I also love a bunch of 80s music, but that's a WAAAAY bigger list. 😅

That’s such a romantic and modern idea. Anyone of noble birth then knew from an early age that their first duty was to marry well, marry where their parents felt best. Marriage was security, and it was a bonus if you and your partner meshed at all. It was about breeding and money. And even a peasant with a child would have been looking for the richest and healthiest opposite sex partner for their child. Marriage was business.

Thank you for a most fascinating story. Despite knowing of and admiring Bess of Hardwick, I have never heard of poor Arbella and her very sad and somewhat useless life. Those who are not fans of royalty or even history, have no idea how ladies of nobility were treated. One would imagine such ladies had a wonderful and carefree life but no, their only use was as a pawn in the monarchs' game of chess, except they used people instead of pieces. A woman living poorly in a village had more freedom. Most go find a book on her and learn more. Again, brilliant video with so many new facts to learn.
Yes, I really like Bess of Hardwick in some ways, but the manner in which she treated her granddaughter was shocking, I think. As you say, it's such a shame that poor Arbella's life was such a waste, especially when she appears to have been such an intelligent and cultured person - it makes you wonder who she would become had she lived today!
Once again you've taken someone who I knew a bit about from documentaries and covered things I wasn't aware of. The speed was perfect, too! Such a sad story though, so similar to the sisters of Lady Jane Grey.

I’ve only heard one or two things about her, but I remember getting a bad impression of Elizabeth (yet another to add to the list lol). I can’t remember wether or not she stayed under arrest after Elizabeth died, but James VI and I was also terrible imo so😭 I feel rly bad for her, but at least after this video I’ll know more about her!

I keep trying to like Elizabeth (and I do respect her for a lot of things) and then I remember another awful thing she did! 😅I do think James VI and I was even worse in many ways, since we could argue Elizabeth was genuinely paranoid for good reason with no children of her own, but James didn't have that same issue at all.
Eventually he married again (to someone much less controversial!) and became an MP for Marlborough in Wiltshire, then going on to sit in the House of Lords. He was a Royalist during the English Civil Wars, and came out pretty well afterwards when Charles II returned to rule. So he did okay for himself, but he kept his head down where necessary after his first marriage.
Such a hypocrite, he would not allow her to marry but James had a wife and "favorite" ridiculous and Elizabeth what a nasty woman, maybe that's why I could care less about her reign than the other Tudors.
Why call Arbella a lost Queen, when she wasn’t crowned or on the throne. There were James 1 and his children before her. I think the person did this is either not british or needs go back school.
