Super Mario World is a game full of secrets and bizarre mysteries. However, one of its greatest remaining unsolved puzzles rests not within the game, but on the cartridge itself! Does this legendary SNES cart truly exist, and is it the key to discovering the beta version of Super Mario World? Or was this all a ploy by Nintendo to make us think Super Nintendo cartridges were cooler than they actually are, and underhandly boost their profits exponentially. Today we dive in and have a look for ourselves!

When we got out SNES back when it first came out, I saw the raised logo and it really bothered me for some reason. So, I wrote to Nintendo and asked why it was raised on the box (also that i noticed the different label on the cart, and I thought there was something different with the controllers, but I don't remember now) Weeks later, I got a letter in the mail. Some guy from NoA typed up a nice reply. He said I have a great eye for spotting the differences. He also said that it was a pre-production model used for the early press and displays. They couldn't mold the raised logo just right for production, so they sunk it into the plastic instead. He also mentioned that the raised logo model was used in ads because they needed the boxes done before the products were complete. A good while later, I got a free copy of Mario All-Stars addressed to me. We never paid for the S&H , and my mom was convinced we stole her money to buy the game, since my brother was begging her to send away for it. I don't really know, but I'd like to think that guy ad NoA sent me the cart cause he liked that a little kid was just *that* interested in the packaging.

The cartridge is definitely edited. Look at the top of the blue background, it's not even close to being straight lol. On a real cartridge, that part is perfectly straight. This was definitely cut out from something, maybe with actual scissors, and placed on there.

It looks like it might be just a piece of ordinary paper which had the graphic printed onto it and was glued to the cartridge similar to the gold NWC carts. He didn't touch on the Player's Choice variant, or the fact that each of the MW-USA and MW-USA-1 cartridges have two different rear labels (one English, one English and French). And those are the ones I can confirm as a non-US collector. The cartridge with Yoshi's feet being behind the foreground is a Canadian thang, specifically the CAN-1 variant (haven't seen any other Canadian version to compare it to). The joys of being a variant collector :D

Nintendo’s “Control Deck” obsession comes from their attempt to disassociate the NES from terminology associated with the 1983 video game crash… the same reason they never call the game paks cartridges. They weren’t the only ones doing this: SEGA called their console the “Power Base.” Anyway, there were plenty of sticker bundles for NES (known as “bonus bundles” by retailers). For example, there is a challenge set with a bonus Dr. Mario. That said, DKC is not a weird exception: the Mario Set replaced the Super Set for the last couple years with the Super Mario World + Super Mario All*Stars cartridge. The Killer Instinct Set (NOT the bonus bundle!) was sold all over and Walmart even had a bonus bundle version that adds a Player’s Guide and hat. IMO, it should’ve been called the Combo Set. ;) BTW, DKC never included a dust cover so that doesn’t belong in your DKC set. One more thing: Nintendo never removed the lock from the original Japanese and PAL consoles so I think they were worried about Americans hurting themselves.
@TheGameDisplay
@TheGameDisplay 6 месяцев назад
Haha, it's funny the hoops game companies tried to jump through back then in order to look one way or another. When it comes to the other obscure sets, in all my years of collecting I'm not sure that I've ever seen the Mario Set or KI Set! I have an All-Stars bonus bundle but I think we've talked before about how that came with SMW and All-Stars separately and not the combo cart. And you're right about the NES having a few bonus bundles as well. I've only ever seen and had the chance to pick up one of them! Nintendo really had no faith in North Americans, haha. The SNES here was designed with an un-even top to prevent people from setting their drinks on top of it which apparently led to countless spills and ruined NES consoles, although I bet people still tried and ruined their SNES consoles anyways, haha. Thank you for watching and commenting! :)

@@TheGameDisplay I sold my Control Set in 1994 to get the Mario Paint bonus bundle Super Set from Walmart (Black Friday deal). A year later my friend got the Killer Instinct Set with Walmart bonuses (Player’s Guide + ball cap) and had to exchange it since the X-Band didn’t recognize his copy. It turns out they were all KI v1.1 so we exchanged for a retail copy (worked!). I sold my Super Set in ‘96 to get a N64 and bought a Mario Set in ‘97 but I watched a lot of parents buying Mario Sets when Super Mario 64 was on display the previous holiday. Shoppers assumed SM64 was the Mario Set and bought that (no N64s in stock)! I swear: I’d stand there playing ~30mins and multiple parents would stop, watch, then toss a Mario Set in their cart. A few would ask if that was what I was playing making it clear what happened with the others. ;) Yeah, Mario Set definitely replaced Super Set until the redesigned SNS-101 Control Deck. Ahead of the Mario Set’s release, Super Sets were converted to equivalent bonus bundles with SMA*S like the one you mention. Similarly, there are some early standard N64s that got a boxed Atomic Purple controller bundled in a huge plastic clamshell since you couldn’t fit the extra controller in the older boxes.

@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 месяцев назад
@@phat-kid Definitely. Nintendo’s “Game Master” Howard Phillips or some other Nintendo insider confirmed with NintendoAge that it was to prevent inserting and removing with the power on which ran the risk of blowing a fuse and causing warranty expenses for Nintendo. He said the risk was very small, but that also means it didn’t take much potential liability to convince them to remove it and just deal with a fraction of a percent higher warranty returns. Whatever it was, they didn’t seem to have the same concern in Japan, Australia, or Europe. I like to think that they were worried about us being the only ones goofy enough to whack ourselves in the head with the entire console and sue. ;)

I'm a European so our SNES and its cartridges share the design with the Japanese counterpart. But of course, I know American cartridges from the flea market. The snes and cartridge on the box look more like mockups to me. I doubt that the system or cartridge actually had anything in them and were just shells for show. The controllers probably were actual snes controllers because they look like they were really for production. That's not surprising because they are just modified super Famicom controllers. I could be entirely wrong, but that's what it looks like to me.

I clicked on this fully expecting this video to be either clickbait or about some really common thing that the majority of retro gamers know about. I was wrong! I'd actually never noticed that the SMW cart was different on the box. Although I got my SNES from my older brother around 1991 or 1992. He had bought it when has was in the army with all the launch games except Gradius 3 and then when he got back home didn't really care about it for whatever reason. But the point is I didn't have the box when I got my SNES. I suppose it wouldn't have mattered if I did, like most everyone else I would have trashed it without a thought. The craziest though is how we all threw away the game boxes and half the time lost the manuals over time too. Back then it was just packaging, we ripped it open pulled out the game and in the trash the box went. At least Genesis had it right with the DVD like cases. Although you still find Genesis/Megadrive games without the box which is weird. How do you lose the big plastic box? I know later they switched to cardboard cases but you still see games that came in the hard case that are loose. Long comment I know, but anyways great video. Good luck on hitting 50K subs soon!

If that was the mold meant to make the actual console, then the raised letters would be backwards. A mold makes a mirror image, which means the letters on the mold have to be backwards so they will come out correct on the finished product. So that is 100% not part of a mold that made the actual console. If that were the case, the word Nintendo would be backwards and on the opposite side of the finished product. Guess you did not think it through as well as you thought you did.

I did not know about the plastic latch inside the system, I don't think mine has that, I didn't get a SNES until '94. it's not a "beta" cartridge, it's a mockup, Mockups are created to show what an item could potentially look like, and all signs show that SNES and cartridge is a mockup. it could be injection molded plastic, but my instinct tells me it's Actually resin. Resin is usually used when constructing mockups for action figures, and a whole lot of things, it's inexpensive, it gives you a reletively good aproxination of the final item in a far quicker time and far cheaper than a steel tool. Some mockup consoles out there exist and they're injection molded, i assume because the tolling was near final but still being refined at the time, But resin models i highly doubt exist out in the wild, they're extremely fragile and chances are paint chipping and other damage is present. You really should stop being so misleading with a lot of your contrent, this isn't lost, it's a mockup just meant for photography and to be discarded after. the terms you use are game development terms witch don't apply to manufacturing.
