The first short documentary from Almost a Country in which we seek the lost tomb of the first and only president of the of the Lemko Republic (*1918 +1919) which I covered in the first episode of this series.
I was always intrigued by Dr. Jaroslaw Kaczmarczyk and found it sad that nobody knows of his final resting place, where his memory, his ambitions and his dedication to his stateless people could be honoured.
This was the mission behind making this short documentary - to locate or at least get a clue on the location of the last resting place of the only president of the Lemko Republic.
In this video, you will see:
Florynka, the former capital of the Lemko Republic
Memorials dedicated to the Lemkos deported from their homes by the Polish
Interview with a Lemko national and an insight into what the republican times in Florynka were like
Don't forget to like and subscribe to keep track of the future videos!

Wow! Fantastic video!! I hope you are able to continue the search for President Jaroslaw Kaczmarczyk's final resting place. It would be a place honored by Lemko's the world over. Thank you for what you're doing!

Thanks for your words! I'm confident it can be found. Unfortunatelly, the next stop on this journey - Krynica - isn't well-accessible to me. Due to the pandemic still being around, I don't want to risk the safety of Mr. Trochanowski, so I will attempt to get some information from the safety of my home and visit Krynica and the rest of Lemkivscina later. So keep up, this certainly wasn't the end! :)

Thank you! I hope you didn't mind where I was desperately trying to speak to the Poles and Lemkos of Florynka - I'm not a Lemko language prodigy, I know. :D

@@AlmostaCountry No worries, you seemed to manage just fine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounded like you spoke some Czech/Slovak as well on the video.

@@theamericanlemko6537 Not wrong at all. A mixture of Czech and Slovak with the few bits I know of Polish thrown in.

Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it. I don't know how often I'll be able to visit these places and (moreso) how often will I want to make these short documentaries. I've struggled to edit this one into a form I really liked for a year or so. I definitely want to continue the storyline of the Lost Tomb of Jaroslaw Kaczmarczyk and maybe even do a separate video about the Republic of Komancza which broke away from this Lemko-Rusyn Republic. Other places might be out of reach for me for the time being, but who can say, maybe in the future I'll get there as well. For now I plan on creating more of the standard content. I promised you the Almighty Don Cossack Republic a year ago, so I might as well make it, then I want to make an episode about the Italian Regency of Carnaro.

Amazing video, you put a lot of effort into it! I have only a question, what is the name of the author of the book you showed? Is it Petro Trochanowski? And what is the title of the book? I would like to buy it online if I can find it.
@AlmostaCountry
@AlmostaCountry 11 месяцев назад
Sorry for the late reply. The title of the book is "Knyha Bilcarevy" meaning the Book of Bilcareva. It seemed to me to be a limited print for a purpose of an anniversary of the village. At least some part of it is written by and edited by Petro Trochanowski, also known as Petro Muryanka, who lives in a nearby village on the border with Slovakia.

Did you ever find the poet? I guess covid kind of ruined everything 😔 I hope you continue to make more of these videos in future! Take care David 💙

Hi Chelsea! True, I wasn't able to reach him yet, also due to Covid. I hope to resume the search once it's passed. In the meantime, I'm working on a Carnaro episode. It is much larger than I anticipated, I estimate it will be at least 40 minutes long, so I hope you'll check it out when it's out! Cheers! David

@@AlmostaCountry Absolutely! Of course I will, I find your content very interesting. I really enjoyed the video about the Don Host and their Republic. It's a great thing you do to keep their history alive! I look forward to your upcoming work, I will activate all the bells and such so I know straight away when you have uploaded the video 😂 Take care, stay safe and thank you for your reply 💜

My mom and I really enjoyed this video! Do you have any plans yet on continuing the search for Kaczmarczyk's grave? Also may I ask you where you are from?

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Jay! Sure I have - first of all, corona needs to end. Then I hope to visit a small border town called Krynica-Zdroj. The author of the book I read through in the video lives there and I was told that if anyone has any clues, it's him. He worked on the border of Czechoslovakia/Poland, so I don't think I've got the time to visit all those small villages, I need to narrow it down a little. I'm from a mixed German-Slovak family, but I was raised and currently live in Prague. :)

This is incredibly interesting to me as a 3rd generation American who has 2 Lemko great grandparents. They were not from Florynka, rather near Cisna further east. Coincidentally, my 4 Polish great grandparents were from closer by in Słopnice to the west. It would seem that this village was also part of the short lived Lemko Republic, though they did not identify as Lemko. They were all Roman Catholic while my Lemko great grandparents were Greek Catholics. FWIW, my other 2 great grandparents were Croats, so all 8 were Slavic.

I'm sorry to say there is no tomb for Jaroslaw Kaczmarczyk. After the trial he returned to Krynica and practiced law, retired from public life. It was there that my father Alexander was born. Jaroslaw remained there until he was arrested by the Soviets after WWII. His fate was unknown for most of my fathers life but in the mid 1990's during the later Glasnost years my father was able to travel to Moscow and confirm that Jaroslaw died in Soviet custody in the late 1940's. I may have a paper from the Soviet archives documenting this but would have to dig through some records to say for sure.

Thank you for sharing this with us, Peter. What you write pretty much confirms what I read in Bogdan Gorbal's books. Just out of curiosity... Was your father an academic who specialized in chemistry and archaeology, studying ancient pottery and glasswork techniques? I stumbled on a paper by Oxford U's Michael Tite dedicated to him. I intended to make a video where I would talk about what I learned from Bogdan Gorbal's work, but - if you wouldn't mind - I would very much appreciate the opportunity to interview you on this topic. Who better to tell the history of Jaroslaw Kaczmarczyk to the Lemkos on the internet than his very grandson? Thanks again for visiting the channel!

@@AlmostaCountry Yes, that would be my father Alexander. Chemistry is what he taught as a primary focus but Archaeology, and specifically Ancient Egypt, was his passion. Bogdan Horbal is a great resource. it is thanks to he work and his talking to my father before my father passed away that there is as much information available as there is. I would be glad to talk to you, as I think I said in another comment my wealth of knowledge is not great but after reviewing some pictures and documents I may have more to say on the topic.
