Absolutely loved watching Herbie when I was little. I saw Herbie fully loaded when it came out, and it was ok. Nothing will ever beat the classics. R.I.P Dean Jones aka Jim Douglas
@@leonardhughes4521 It was. It was nothing like this first movie or any of its other sequels. It was the first one I ever heard about Herbie, except that I hadn't realized that it was one of the modern-day sequels towards The Love Bug franchise. And it completely omits any relations to Jim Douglas, Tennessee Steinmetz, Peter Thorndyke, or Havershaw, in which I wasn't very happy about.
2:19 The music gives me chills! This is where it all started! First Herbie appearance! He first loved Jim because he stood up for him. ❤❤ The actor Dean Jones actually owned that particular Beetle.
Yeah, that what I love about this scene. Herbie must been really touched that Jim came to defend him. It also nice Herbie also steps in to defend others too. It shows how much love Herbie and Jim have for each other.
“Get it out of here!” Thorndyke snarls, then gives Herbie a kick. “What’s that for?” says Jim, challenging Thorndyke. “I beg your pardon?” “Why don’t you let the little car alone?” This is a classic confrontational scene between the two men when it was expertly shown, they had initially appeared to hit it off, but it went downhill fast when Jim asked Thorndyke about a car within his price range. A bit later, Havershaw and the mechanics are pushing Herbie back, he can be seen resisting them. Herbie felt he had made a new friend, as he was fully aware that Jim had stood up for him in the showroom.
My favorite is Alonzo Hawke in the sequel. I remember watching it in the early 1980s and I cracked up when Hawke had nightmares about being chased by VWs with shark teeth.
David Tomlinson played both good guys (George Banks in "Mary Poppins") and bad guys (Peter Thorndyke here) for Disney. No wonder why he was honored as a Disney Legend!
@@largol33t1 One thing I learned later on was that Alonzo Hawk was in THREE different Disney movies, The Absent Minded Professor, the sequel Son of Flubber and Herbie Rides Again.
David Tomlinson sure had an amazing gift with facial expressions and vocal skills to u just dont see actors like these anymore and we lost Dean Jones in 2015 another great actor
Haha how fascinating now we’ve had the benefit of your point of view shall we regard our relationship as terminated…. HAVERSHAW!!!!!!! Get this eyesore out of here and if ever I find it here somebody is going to be in a GREAT DEAL OF TROUBLE!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s what I like about this scene. Herbie and Jim were a great team when it came to racing of course. They knew how to get the job done and win races.
I loved these herbie movies. I used to stay up all night watching "the love bug" while everyone was asleep. As long as I could keep the tv volume down, i wouldn't get caught
Same here. I would watch Herbie all the time too. This and Herbie goes to Monte Carlo are my top picks. The other movies were good too, but there’s something about those two movies that I really like
1:26 When we were watching this about 4 years ago, my twin sister screamed out "that's the dad from Mary Poppins!!!". Yet, she didn't know his name. Both David Tomlinson and Dean Jones deserve every claim and statue of being classed real Disney legends.
Interesting factoid: The Lovebug takes place in the same time and in the same city as another movie that has arguably the best car chase scene in history. I’m talking about Steve McQueen’s Bullitt. Bonus fact, during Bullitt’s epic chase, a VW bug keeps showing up in front of the fast moving cars time and again. Must be a close relative of Herbie.
1:06 1963 Apollo GT A minor make, but still a collectible imported racecar coupe from that time period. And it has a similar body style to the 1963 jaguar E-type. And only a few of them were made with automatic transmission. Pretty sweet ride. If I was rich, I'd buy one and restore it. And a herbie replica too! LOL!
This was actually a privately built American car with a Buick engine and Euro styling. I had the good fortune of seeing one at the San Diego County Fair once. I thought I'd never see one in my entire life.
@@largol33t1 I remember when sports cars did 0-60 in around 6-7 seconds. Under 5 was what the supercars were doing! My current Ford Edge SUV does 0-60 around 7 seconds, so time has certainly moved on lol!
If Disney can produce a film exploring Cruella DeVille’s origin, I can picture a film that portrays Thorndyke as a bitter man having to come to terms with Germany’s post-war economic miracle, which is represented through the rise of the German import scene. That, in his younger years, Thorndyke suffered a traumatic experience in the war. Whether it was being jumped by bf109s in the skies over Britain, or perhaps the trauma of slaying a Tiger after a deployment of Shermans he is part of are knocked out following Normandy. Years later after making a fresh start in the US, all that comes flooding back when he is forced to deal with the ‘little car’. Those experiences flooding back when presented with the innocent looking Volkswagen Beetle.
And I thought that legend was born, in "Herbie: Fully Loaded", but I hadn't realized at the time, of that particular movie being released, that the legend was first born in 1969.
Love the movie, my father showed it to me when i was really young and i'm so thankful for that. And the cars in that dealership are glorious. Definitely going to copy them in gta
@@JohnAckerman93 "HAVERSHAW! Get this eyesore out of my showroom. And if ever I find it here again, someone is going himself in a GREAT DEAL OF TROUBLE!"
@@mvol5973 Um, that's precisely why Adolf Hitler agreed to help fund the forming of Volkswagen. He admitted the Germans needed affordable, reliable transportation for the working class. And yes, VW was founded by the German Labour Front, which later was renamed the NSDAP, the Nazi Party. Before anyone gets worked up and butthurt, remember that Henry Ford (yes, that Henry Ford) was a vicious racist and HUGE supporter of the Nazi party. He had personally met Hitler a few times.
"HAVERSHAW! Get this eyesore out of my showroom, and Ever if I find it here again, someone is going to find themselves in a *GREAT DEAL OF TROUBLE!!!!* "
I always used to wonder why my Dad would chuckle at 0:18 when I first saw this as a 6 year old. I didn't get the joke till I was 23. (Honestly, I was just trying to read the sign).
Everyone's in the comments yapping about how sharp and wonderful the '63 Apollo GT is. But, I rather take the 1963 Volkswagen Beetle Sunroof Sedan in a God forsaken heartbeat. I want a VW Bug so bad, but I can't find one anywhere that wouldn't suck my wallet dry.
*offers Jim a glass* Thorndyke: What price range do you have in mind? Jim: About Seventy-Five Dollars. Thorndyke: Seventy-Five Dollars? Heh-heh. 0_0 Jim: I could go eighty. What do ya have in the way of cheap, honest transportation? *Snatches drink and pours it back into bottle* Thorndyke: (scoffs, disgusted) "Cheap, honest transportation"
HERBIE FRANCHISE 1. The Love Bug (1969) 2. Herbie Rides Again (1974) 3. Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977) 4. Herbie Goes Bananas (1980) 5. Herbie: The Love Bug: TV Series (1982)
And later voiced as Mr. Peevley in the 1971 Hanna-Barbera cartoon "Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch!". His last TV appearance was on 1973's "Match Game" on CBS.
Actually, it was John Stephenson who voiced Peevly in Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch! Same with Finkerton in Inch High: Private Eye. Stephenson makes a great Joe Flynn impersonator.
In the Herbie movie with Bruce campbell it is show what is the cause of Herbie's sentience ( well everybody knows that) would make sense if a prequel movie was made showing it again and he hiding since his creator let him free as he was afraid the germans (again show in the 97 movie) would use him as weapon . And the movie's final scene would enf up with the beginning of the first movie.
2:19 Herbie: Hi My Name is Herbie 2:34 Herbie: Okay Before You Take Me There's One Thing you Don't know About Me 2:53 Herbie: HEY WATCH IT 3:00 Herbie:(To the Viewers) I don't like it when People Insult Me 3:42 Herbie: He Should Be My Owner
$75, and Thorndyke turns Douglas down, the start of the Douglas-Thorndyke rivalry, though with a guy like Thorndyke (being rich with his business, $75 adjusted for inflation is $525, is no big deal, it's pocket change).
I know right this movie is awesome I grew up with this movie and all of the old movies and classics this original love bug movie is awesome I saw a comment when disney plus put this on there someone said that they were going to redo this movie and I hope that they don't redo it you just can't replace Dean Jones and Tennessee and michelle lee
