Unpopular Opinion: I actually prefer the love story of Faramir and Eowyn over that of Aragorn and Arwen, even from the books. Wish there had been more screen time given to it in the movies. Faramir is so tender with her, it just makes me melt.
@gailf1617

There's more romance in the story of Faramir and Eowyn; it's less epic and more real. The only Aragorn/Arwen interaction is in the Appendices, and it's more removed from the action; also the ending, for Arwen, is terribly sad.
@waywardpelican

I was going to post this exact comment. For me, this love story is more real than Aragorn and Arwen. I too would like to see more of this in the films, but maybe someday, maybe in Amazon’s series, we could see the story.

Well I wouldn’t say unpopular opinion. A great deal of peoples ideas about this is from the movies. All we got to see was them standing together.🤷‍♀️ They do have a lovely story. But Aragorn had to win Arwen’s hand by proving himself worthy, they loved each other since he lived with the elves, and she gave up her elfhood? for him, to live a mortal life. They both are true love stories.
@HTMR-de8gz
@HTMR-de8gz 4 года назад
An unpopular counter opinion: I think the story of Faramir and Eowyn is more human because they are ... well... human. However I do believe the love of Arawen and Aragorn is much deeper. Remember that Arawen is thousands of years old, and Aragorn is well into his Eighties. They have been lovers a very long time by the events of the story. It was tender and passionate in the beginning, then by now has cooled to steadfast and unyielding by the events of the story. It's a time tested and old love that we see sparking anew as the story ends. Arawen does eventually die, but returns herself with Aragorn and later their children to the undying lands through death. I love both stories and I think they are both great examples of relationships at very different times.

When the movies first came out, I remember how sad my younger sister was for Eowyn, that her feelings for Aragorn remained unrequited. When I explained to her that in the books she develops a love story with Faramir, my sister's eyes lit up. I took out the Return of the King and we read their story together. It was so nice to share such a sweet tale together.

I'm usually someone that doesn't care about shallow romance, nor care about couples. However, there's something about the story of Faramir and Eowyn that made me happy for those two. Two lost souls that found happiness not through death within the battlefield or war, but rather, by healing and learning the importance of life. That someone's worth is not proved by fighting, yet is living with kindness and understanding.

One of the few complaints I have concerning Jackson's Trilogy was the absence of the lovely exchange between Faramir and Eowyn in the Houses of Healing: "...and my window does not look eastward." Tolkien showed how the relationship developed. Jackson did not.

It was one of the many things I disliked about the film, although as LC says time might be an excuse for that. There was no excuse for his worst abortion of the story with the character assassination of Farimir. The entire point of the encounter with Frodo and Sam was that Faramir rejected the ring, showing his greater strength of character compared to his brother and father.
@chizzieshark
@chizzieshark 3 года назад
@@stephenpickering8063 I don't like the change but agree with it. Jackson spent the entire 'Fellowship' movie establishing how to the Ring corrupts all beings. Then suddenly along comes Faramir who rejects the Ring outright - it doesn't make sense in the context of a movie. It's better to show his reasons for rejecting the Ring as they develop. Having said that, Jackson redeemed Faramir in the Extended Editions. One of my favourite scenes with Faramir is when he speculates about the life of the Haradrim soldier. Wish that had stayed in the theatrical cut.
@2visiondigital
@2visiondigital 7 месяцев назад
Jackson messed up plain and simple. Many minutes of gratuitous warfare and hideous ork crap could have been edited to portray one of the most beautiful aspects of trilogy. I question his motives. The book remains far superior to his trilogy, great as it is.

@Berserking Bishop It is undoubtingly the fact that it is love from the heart that permeates Christian teaching....As Jesus stated to love God with your whole heart, mind and body....and to love your neighbour (your fellow humankind). That upon these two principals the whole of God's Laws hangs. Yes Love.

During the battle Dagor Dagorath did Morgoth somehow reconstituted his strength so that explains why he gets bold again and directly fights the Valar like he did during the early days of Arda's existence? I heard he somehow imperiled his parts of his spirit into Arda similar to how Sauron did with the One ring on a greater scale but with the sacrifice of much his greater power. Maybe Morgoth decided to slowly reabsorb the remnants of his spirit from Arda and that explains why he somehow gets strong enough to challege the Valar again and completely shatter Vailnor. That's my idea.

This love story has always been my favorite of all in LOTR, Arwen and Aragorn loved each other from the moment they set eyes on each other even though they were of different races. But, Faramir would possibly be looked at by his fellow Gondorians as muddying the line of Gondor Stewards by marrying a Rohan Shield Maiden, but he didn’t care. He wanted to be with the person who meant more to him than anybody else left in his life.
@gailf1617

You're right that Faramir wouldn't care; also, Eowyn had some Numenorean blood in her through her grandmother, Morwen of Lossarnach, a noblewoman of Gondor who was related to the Prince of Dol Amroth (Faramir's Numenorean-blooded uncle). Theoden himself was born in Gondor, his father Thengel having been self-exiled there and met/married Morwen (who was later called Morwen Steelsheen by the Rohirrim).

I always liked their love story. Yes, there is not a lot of time spent on it, not in the books and even less in the movies, but I don't think it matters that much. While their relationship is not really developed as much, both are individually very well developed characters, with a personality and some kind of narrative arc, which naturally leads them to this conclusion.

this story i feel is more about a Christian love, to people met with hurt but through one another, and rather despising those who did not love them back as they would have wished, grew to love each other as a neighbor, those that hurt them rather than hate, and to by loving one another through God, that they are both healed, since Tolkien was a Christian or Catholic, he would follow or implement this behavior in his story

Inserting your self performed commercials inside your videos will not get me to watch, or listen to, your commercials. I use four ad blockers to defeat most advertising. RU-vidrs have developed the practice of inserting self performed ads in the videos. The problem you have with the way you do this, is that RU-vid videos still have that slide at the bottom, so I can skip your ads

Men of the West "self performed commercials" are among the only ones on RU-vid I can bear to watch (and even like) for the following two reasons: firstly they are usually advertising stuff that might well be of interest to watchers of the Men of the West series, and secondly because they aren't accompanied by the horrible jangling music, force-cranked volume and flashy images that make most commercials a form of customer abuse. Yoystan, as far as I'm concerned, you can just keep right on "self performing" commercials - and thanks for your beautifully produced series Men of the West.

Faramir was just as noble as Aragorn, given his family had been caretaking the Throne for generations, basically being the "ruling family" for that time. Technically Eowyn out-ranked him being the niece of King Theoden and sister to Prince (later King) Eomer, as a Princess. Yet Faramir's gentle and noble nature won over this Daughter of Kings and Shieldmaiden of Rohan

I adore this love story in a minor key. Two wounded hearts, healing together. And Faramir is unashamed to be a ‘lesser’ man, but delights in his treasure. Contrasted with Boromir and his longing for glory.
@michaelmatejka1294
@michaelmatejka1294 4 года назад
Boromir and Faramir both longed to honor their father. Boromir just happened to be the first born and not recieve the hate. Boromir longed to defend his people, he had a passion for his home and through those desires the ring/Sauron was able to tempt him. Sorry, but I love both Faramir and Boromir and this post seemed to do Boromir a little too dirty

Eowyn's grandmother was Morwen of Lossarnach, who was probably of high blood, as there were still a few families of "purer" blood left in Gondor. "If Gondor has such men in these days of fading, great must have been its glory at its rising"--Gimli.

@@christianfarren1179 Morwen of Lossarnach was named for Morwen the mother of Turin, who was named Eledhwen: "Elf Woman" for her dignity and the brightness of her eyes, which rivaled the Noldor who returned from the Blessed Lands. So, in effect, Faramir DID wed a woman of the race of Numenor.
@OreadNYC
@OreadNYC Год назад
Yes, Eowyn's grandmother Morwen was from Gondor but that doesn't necessarily mean she was highborn or came from Numenorean stock. In fact, it seems fairly unlikely that she was even though Thengel was the heir to the throne of Rohan -- the books suggest that even though Gondor and Rohan are longtime allies, the culture of Gondor is much more formal than that of Rohan and the people of Gondor don't really regard the people of Rohan as being their equals. When Faramir tells Eowyn that he loves her, Eowyn points out that the people of Gondor very well might criticize or at least question him for choosing her -- especially since he's not only highborn but of Numenorean blood and as the son of the Steward could have virtually any woman he wants. Being from Gondor, Morwen would also have known the history of Vidumavi -- the daughter of a chieftain from what later eventually became Rohan who caught the eye of the heir to the throne of Gondor (when Gondor still had kings). Their marriage eventually led to Gondor descending into civil war because the people of Gondor did not consider Vidumavi to be acceptable as a queen and the mother of the heir.
