Clive and Jill's romance in FFXVI might just be the best I have seen in Final Fantasy History.

It was honestly the only natural relationship I’ve seen happen in final fantasy, and it’s LITERALLY the favorite one in Japan tbh, “childhood friends” basically.

@@W3ll4nI agree. In the Bahamut VA’s GameRant interview about playing Dion he mentions Dion and Terrance were childhood friends, as well, and that only once Dion’s stately and military duties separated them did they have to sever themselves from one another other than fleeting moments of personal tenderness in the shadow of world events’ burden, strain, and demands upon them. It makes sense of when he laments that Terrance cannot be his master rather than the crushing weight of Empire upon its Dominant.
@W3ll4n
@W3ll4n Год назад
@@philodygmn Yes, Dion's and Terence relationship was very nicely done too. And to add to your comment, it helped to push the point that the dragoons were loyal to the Dominant of Bahamut and not the emperor, as their 2 leaders were in a relationship (Implicating that Terence would himself be loyal to Dion)
@philodygmn
@philodygmn Год назад
@@W3ll4n I disagree slightly in the sense that the point I’m making is to hilight the authenticity of their personal bond: though your point is entirely valid that the story impels Terrance’s fealty to his order’s lord commander, it is that same force of duty tormenting Dion in/into that lord commander role subject to Empire which served as the original wedge between them. All the more precious and valuable, then, their vulnerability as individuals and courage in striving to maintain their care for one another on that individual basis.

Clive and Jill turned out to be my favorite couple as well! To my surprise actually, I had zero expectations with regards to a love angle with FF16. There's so much nuance with how realistic and genuine their love was expressed. It's incomparable to the others, they have so much harmony.

I think there are a couple of elements that people tend to underestimate or misread about them and their relationship (even more so with respect to Jill who is saddled by the expectations of narrower criteria of what people want their female protags to be): one is that those are very deeply traumatized people, to the point where five years is actually not that long to rebuild oneself from the ground up and regain one's humanity. Jill has virtually never known what freedom is, since she was first a political prisoner, and then turned into a weapon against her will by the very people who emotionally and physically abused her. In that respect, there is the title of that new artwork floating around which roughly says "The body of a beast, a heart of ice" which situates her mindset when we reunite with her. And Clive's circumstances are made very explicit in-game too. We even see both consider suicide (she at the beginning of that initial fight, he when he crosses a bridge during his mission to help Gav right after finding out he's Ifrit) Yes, Jill initiates a move early on in Eastpool, but truthfully she is not ready for it, and Clive is just frozen by the weight of everything at that stage. What they truly need from each other in that 5-year rebuilding phase is that absolute understanding and acceptance, and the unconditional commitment that they have for each other. That's probably one of the aspects that makes their relationship truly shine and feel grounded: they are best friends, and even soulmates (in a wider sense than just romantic) before being lovers I also agree with pretty much everything you've said about Jill specifically: she is on her own journey of atonment and rebuilding, and it lasts the whole game. Part of me wishes we had more obvious cues, that way people would not think to call her flat, or not powerful enough (especially since we know she's carried Clive the whole five years of the time skip). But what they have done is more in keeping with the integrity of her character as a whole. My only grip is that she could have been utilized more in certain scenes - but it's nothing a dlc couldn't solve, because it's just a matter of showing what we already know
@brendanlee369
@brendanlee369 Год назад
The relationship between Clive and Jill is sweet and tender and I enjoy it to a certain extent, but for me at least, the game's lackluster treatment of Jill as her own individual character unfortunately drags it down, with the way she gets progressively sidelined and relegated to the background. She peaks at the Iron Kingdom but gets almost no interesting content afterwards outside her relationship support with Clive. And even before the 5-year timeskip, she kinda felt like a third wheel to Cid and Clive and very much lacked presence during the Drake's Head segment. For me to feel fully invested in a romance, both characters need to be individually engaging, make enough active contributions, and have deeper connections outside of each other. Jill lacks meaningful interactions with other characters, she barely even talks with Joshua. She has no family relations, positive or negative, to speak of. She had something decent with Marleigh from the Iron Kingdom, but she never brings her up again, doesn't know if she survived; I would've liked a side quest where Jill tries to track her down as well as the others who escaped and maybe find a home for them or something. Another issue is that much of Jill's dialogue - if she actually gets lines and isn't just standing in the background - feels somewhat... dry and matter-of-fact, not sure if that's the best way to put it, but yeah. It's just harder to engage with even if there may be backstory rationale for why she's subdued like that. There's almost no sense of banter/levity involved with her either. Clive is straight and serious a lot with tons of baggage, too, but he still gets to bounce/play off other characters from time to time, particularly with Cid and Gav and Byron and a few others in the hideaway. You and Quazii may argue that Jill is naturally reserved and doesn't interject herself into conversations unless necessary, but I think the story takes it too far, to the point where she just lacks active narrative presence too much when not tied to Clive. And like I said, even when Jill does interject, it's frequently matter-of-fact business talk. And then her Shiva appearances are underwhelming, she gets captured twice, sits out the Bahamut fight, doesn't join the party during Ash/Waloed, doesn't participate in the final battle, it's just disappointing... Jill's the main heroine, the only female party member, and Clive's most frequent travel companion, so I expected better for her own character. I don't believe my "expectations" are the problem here, as I'm far from the only one who harbors these criticisms.

@RatchildUK Год назад
@@Leonhart_93 You clearly missed the point of Clive's character arc. He was a loner who had difficulties with attachment, very similar to Squall actually. This was even confirmed by Ben Starr during the pre release demo walkthroughs he did. It's also heavily implied that they did get together in the 5 year time skip (the boatsman basically calls them a couple) and their interaction on the beach says clearly to me that they had seen each other naked before that moment, the point of that scene was Clive finally embracing his connections, not that they banged on the beach (which they did).
@Leonhart_93
@Leonhart_93 Год назад
@@RatchildUK I don't think they did something before that, their hesitant kiss attempt on the bed tells you perfectly where they stood all this time. The NPCs can feel there is something there, but they themselves avoid the subject. I absolutely love these two together. Their love story is a big reason why FF16 has become my favorite game. The fact that they held onto their bond of friendship after 13 years of separation and turmoil was already so beautiful to me. To see them grow together as comrades and then as a couple later warmed my heart. The writers and developers of this game captured the essence of a pure, enduring love that is so difficult to find in this world. Jill is easily one of my favorite female characters in gaming because of how mature she is and how she always felt equal to Clive. Even though her role in the story starts to diminish in the latter portion of the second half, she was an instrumental part of Clive's journey. He would not have been the man he was without her support. When he was weak, she gave him strength and vice versa. Clive and Jill are tremendously strong characters on their own, but together they are the literal definition of a power couple. They're both reserved people who have lived through severe trauma and nearly gave up hope, but in finding each other again they found new reasons to live and fight. Their story is so inspiring to me. Definitely my favorite Final Fantasy couple as well. Thanks for making this video. Best wishes and God bless you. :)

Thank you for spitting facts for 10 minutes straight. I always had this in my mind after finishing 16 where i felt the relationship between Clive and Jill harder than others in the FF series, especially Cloud and Tifa. It just felt more close to realistic and deeper since they were 2 (mostly) emotionally mature adults navigating their feelings through the darkest times. I also love the defense of Jill’s character in the end too. I’ve seen too many comparisons of her to Tifa and it got really annoying because it seemed like either people wanted something out of Jill that they weren’t gonna get, or completely missed the crux of her character. But you seem to have hers down perfectly. You’ve even made points I’ve made to myself and others so I know we’re on the same wavelength with this. Once again, fantastic video! Thanks for making it

Best power couple in the series. It's unfortunate they sidelined her character arc toward the end. I think the developers did that because they're always obsessed with ambiguous endings for Final Fantasy games and couldn't have Jill go to the final fight. Most of the crew is also left out of the ending because including them would not have allowed for an ambiguous ending that they love doing so much. Jill and the crew deserved better as they spent so much time in the game getting development.

I'm in the last few hours and I still haven't seen Jill, Torgul, or Joshua even display any character building or progression in any way. Hands down the most one-note FF. Summing up relationships in this story is pretty much "here's a scene where we are TELLING you to care and a relationship exists" rather than allowing those moments to come about due to emergent storytelling.
