Jade and StormClouds are American budgies. Jade is a little yellow female and StormClouds is a black and white spotted male. This is their journey from laying eggs to hatching 4 beautiful chicks!
I had no idea what colors the babies would be as I do not know the colors of Jade and StormClouds' parents. This was the first pairing for both birds. As new parents they did great!
Some budgie facts:
*** usually the female budgie chooses her mate. Jade decided she liked StormClouds, so they were separated into their own portion of the cage with their nest box and away from other parakeets
*** Budgies lay a clutch of eggs, usually each one about a day apart. The eggs are about the size of a jellybean.
*** It take about 21 days for an egg to hatch. The first egg laid usually hatches first, then the others follow about a day apart.
*** Budgie babies are born without feathers and their mother keeps them warm. Sometimes both parents feed the babies, though in Jade and StormClouds' family, she did all the feeding.
*** Their eyes open in about 10 days to 2 weeks, and they then begin to grow feathers. By about 4 weeks on average, they have developed their feathers and are starting to try to climb out of the nest box.
*** It is too early to tell whether the babies are males or females. As they get older, I'll be able to tell by the color of the cere--the part around their nostrils and above their beak.
*** So Jade and StormClouds had three almost identical blue/ pastel babies with beautiful white wings and one that is green and yellow.
*** As the babies emerge from the nest box, they soon learn to eat seeds and veggies on their own. Then they fly and play just like an adult bird.
