THE LOVELY BONES (2009) TWIN BROTHERS FIRST TIME WATCHING MOVIE REACTION! 

I think you are probably missing the point or the importance of the kissing scene at the end. When Susie died she died in such a violent way with her innocence being stolen from her. She was never able to experience what it was like to have a kiss or to have real intimacy with someone. Her only experience was an extreme act of violence where she was violated in the worst way possible. The kiss scene was a way for her to finally experience that act of love in a way that was real and not the violent violation she experienced in her last moments. She needed to experience something beautiful to replace something so horrible. Being a SA survivor myself I can tell you that when you’re violated in that way it sticks with you and changes the person you are forever, in the story that’s the last act that she experienced in her human life and that’s not what she wanted to remember about intimacy or being with someone.

In the book susie and her sister talk about how they would get away with a murder. Susie said she would use an icicle because the evidence would melt away. Poetic justice

Something I learned recently about the scene of Susie's dad talking to George: Her dad realized George stopped caring for the flowers after Susie disappeared. Meaning George was using the flowers as an excuse to watch Susie while she was playing outside. Furthermore and more importantly; George said he was sorry for their loss, when they were still looking for Susie. They hadn't confirmed to the public that she was dead.

Stanley Tucci made SURE that he didn’t look like himself when he played this role. He said that if he did, it would’ve ended his career because nobody will see him as anybody else but that monster George Harvey. And I believe him. So freaking talented (got him his only Oscar nomination) but SO freaking scary. Too scary even. Lol

The book went into much greater detail about her death. She was raped before she was dismembered. Stanley said that if that was in the movie he refused to do it. He couldn't touch her like that. Even after every scene, he would go to the hotel and ask her if she was okay, that he didn't scare her to much.

I feel like the ending is INTENDED to anger people. Especially those who have a strong sense of justice. You're meant to be left unsatisfied by the death of Mr. Harvey and by the fact that they never find Suzie's body. It reflects the reality of things like this. However, the miniscule comfort I took was that in the end, Harvey died so insignificantly, without anyone in his life to mourn or search for him. No one gave a shit about his maggot existence. When Harvey dies, he leaves behind nothing but a cold void. Suzie's murder brought immense devastation to her family and community, but SHE had been a loving and beloved light in the lives of those around her. Eventually, they are all able to move forward again, taking solace in having known and loved Suzie. While her story is rage-inducing, Suzie's short "here for a moment and then gone" life was, ultimately more impactful than Harvey's despicable and unjustly long life. This isn't by any means a 'win' for Suzie or some kind of positive spin. It's simply the case when this happens. Sadly, it happens every day.

Honestly, the moment I start crying every single time, is when Susie is standing under the tree in her world and all the other victims come to meet her and the youngest girl gives her a hug.

My very best friend was abducted when we were in 3rd grade. Abducted and murdered.. it’s been 37 years now and we’ve never found her body. And no one was ever charged and convicted. It’s common knowledge that a man from Tammy’s neighborhood was the assailant. But no evidence..and he left the state. He was arrested in Florida for another attack on a young girl. While serving his time, he became gravely ill and everyone tried to get a deathbed confession and location of her remains…that never happened…Tammy Belanger was abducted in Exeter NH..if anyone knows anything, PLEASE, PLEASE get in touch with the Exeter NH police.. I still miss and cry for my best friend..even 37 years later ❤️❤️💔💔❤️❤️

This is why I won't raise my kids with the whole mentality of "since it's an adult, you can't be rude" fuck that, be rude be loud. If they're giving you creepy vibes, leave and find someplace public if you aren't in one already. Just because they're "elders" doesn't mean they deserve your respect or kindness.

by the way, you asked about the roses wilting? suzie wanted to be a nature photographer so his roses were his creepy way to lure her outside his house and talk to her so he could gain her trust

I think what's hurts deep about not finding the body is the reality of it. Most of cases or sad/horrible story like this one are left with the victims's body never found. Just go to the police station nearby your town and look all the disappearance or missing photos on the wall. This is so real and raw.

As someone who has gone through SA from a very young age, disassociation is very real. It's the thinking, "Whatever happens to my body, at least my mind is free."

When I saw the title: Oh boy, here we go 😭 Edit: I understand the frustrations of the ending when they didn’t find the body, but you have to realize this was Susie’s closure. She knew finding her body wouldn’t give her the closure she needed to pass on. She just wanted to be a girl one more time(her first kiss) since her childhood was taken away. Also, a lot of families and victims don’t get the proper closure (finding the body or finding out who it was) or justice they deserve. That’s life. We don’t always get a happy ending and evil people get away with their crimes. She took what closure she could have before moving on.

I've always been a fan of Stanley Tucci, but he took it to another level in this film. I was so used to his charming, funny, and light-hearted performances that I was not prepared for the complete 180 here. Talk about HORRIFYING. Especially that underground scene. The Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination was absolutely deserved.

The ending always stuck out to me, cause sadly so many people are murdered and families never get closure.

Saoirse Ronan became one of my favorite actresses with this. She's done some other great films too, like Hanna.

As a single dad of daughters that are my Life ❤️ this movie absolutely terrifies me and breaks my heart! Sadly this is a reality for too many in the world today. Prayers for any who have gone thru this. Protect your family and give your kids the knowledge for safety needed on this world today.

The scene of the family sitting around the table laughing and eating whilst waiting for Susie to walk through the door is chilling to me. They are doing such a normal thing what we all do not a care in the world whilst their child is being horrifically assaulted and murdered. Sadly not getting justice or having closure happens far too often. I don’t know what’s worse not knowing what happened to your child or knowing exactly what happened to them 😢

When her sister was in the house, I was seriously in physical pain from the tension. Oh my GOD.

This movie was a realistic take on families that never were able to find their family members body. It's too simple to tie a bow on the situation and make him suffer and her body being found. This movie shows how long one hopes for an outcome that will never come. I feel so deeply saddened for people who have gone through this tragedy. I remember watching this movie when I was 14 or 15 and it stuck with me. Like, I could have been her. I could have be in that situation. It's scary to think about. No wonder my mom and abuela were always saying NO to sleepovers and had to know everything of the person before I left the house. They were protecting me because I thought I was invincible and no one could ever hurt me.

I remember reading this book when I was 10 and WAY too young to be reading something like that. I was about Suzie's age when the movie came out, and I distinctly remember feeling like my heart was being ripped out at the end. I was inconsolable. I went to see it with a friend and I cried the entire time we waited for my dad to come pick us up from the theater.

The fact that he died in such an odd way and that he fell over into that ditch... That plays into the fact since it happened in the winter he's going to remain hidden just like she was. He was also tumbled over and dumped as if HE was nothing. HE was not the person who was treated as nothing just like he treated ALL THE OTHERS. It was something that he ended up actually doing TO HIMSELF in a way because he was careless. Have he been careful about life in general meaning his own, he never would've fallen over the edge. HE was standing by that ledge and feeling overconfident that he will be able to overpower that woman and drag her into the car IF HE HAD TO.. Had he NOT been out there stalking another victim this never would have happened to him. So you see the correlation the parallels when it comes to this now? It's not just about the fact that ohhh haha he died in such a weird way. It's about the fact that he died in the pursuit of doing something bad and how he landed by tumbling over into a ditch the way in the SAME WAY that he had shown no respect for HER BODY when he had decided to discard her. SHE will never be found by HER FAMILY. Remember something he lives alone, so he will most probably never been claimed either. Because other than people at his job. NOBODY is really going to be actively looking FOR HIM. In the end, it was him who ended up being the nobody for all of us, you see? 😉

in the first version they didn't show his death this explicitly, but the test audience was so unsatisfied with not seeing him suffer that they included his death more graficly

The metaphor from the rose bush scene is that Mr. Harvey only tended to the roses so he could watch Susie and fantasize. The father has a flashback of when Susie was alive. Mr. Harvey was making small talk with him while Susie played right behind him. He realized the flowers are dead now. Mr. Harvey has neglected his roses ever since Susie died… he no longer had a reason to be out there. That’s how Jack figured out it was him who did it.

That murder scene is THE most uncomfortable scene in movie history.

They went easier in the movie than in the book when it came to the body. In the book, a dog found the elbow.

This is a movie I watched when I was 12 years old and it stuck with me so hard. I would think about this movie CONSTANTLY for the couple of weeks after I saw it. It gave me such a weird feeling that I'll never forget. It also got me to stay away from creepy men 😭

They never found her body and the killer didn't get caught. Sadly that how it is in real life sometimes.

One of my favorites, always makes me cry..literally the first line in. I took the dvd to my friends in highschool for a sleepover and she fell asleep but her brother was sitting with me and we were both crying towards the end

Reading the book before kids, hard. Reading it after kids, absolutely horrifying.

The original novel of this is so tough to read, it's even more disturbing than the movie... I mean they REALLY toned it down for the movie.

I really love this movie. I think it was lost on a lot of viewers, or was too artsy for some people. I really like though that Tucci’s character dies alone with no one, no one would care, no one would even think to grieve him. I also really like how it traveled with the family through grief and healing.

I've read the book and seen this movie once. That was enough for me. So when I saw the title for this video I was like "Nope. I am not going to traumatize myself again." Good luck lol

Just a couple things, first off great reaction, secondly I read the book a couple times and I was never really pleased with the way the movie dealt with some of the major themes in the book. In the book he dumped her body shortly after killing her so Peter Jackson including it to run concurrently with that kiss always grated on me because in the book they happened years apart. Also, in the book she said that the only thing left of her body was a funny stain on the floor of the garage where some of her fluids leaked out of the safe. A stain that the future owners of the house could never get rid of. The book was a lot more graphic as to what happened to her in that hole. He raped her brutally and then killed her. Also the wife had a love affair with the cop. Which always really irritated me. His death at the end also illustrated how people don't always get what they deserve. Yes he deserved to be beaten and drawn and quartered, instead he just toppled down a hill. The unfairness of life and the processing of grief was a huge part of what the book was about. PS I can't wait for you to do how to train your dragon 3

Amazing movie! It never fails to make me cry and it's still one of my favorites. It's both a devastating and beautiful story.

As a man with a young daughter, movies like this always hit hard. Prisoners was another one.

I actually like that they didn’t find the body because just like in real life a lot of these families don’t ever have closure and have to find a way to keep living even with the unanswered questions.

Every part with Stanley Tucci was terrifying and exciting. Properly eerie performance, cause we know those people exist.

Her kiss, that was what she had wanted the most, and because she was taken advantaged of, her innocence stolen from her, she wanted to have what she wanted in her last moment on Earth.

This movie is so remarkably uncomfortable and sad. I recommend people watch “Quality Culture’s” video about it. She helps make sense of the disturbed feelings the story brings us, and tries to reconcile the way the movie ends without real closure.

As someone who read the book at an incredibly young age and watched the movie when it came out I loved watching you guys react! At 21:33 you guys mention that Mr. Harvey stopped taking care of the flowers and that you feel like you missed the metaphor in the interaction between him and Susie’s father. The point of showcasing the dying flowers is that Mr. Harvey was only using taking care of the rose bush as a means to watch Susie. If you notice when Susie is taking the pictures of the rose bush while she is on the bike, Mr. Harvey is standing in the background. Since Susie’s father picked up the pictures beforehand and was searching through them for answers the rosebush being dead sparked the interest/idea of questioning Mr. Harvey. Like he said, “Susie’s a smart kid, she would never go off with a stranger. It had to be someone she knew.”

Saoirse Ronan is such a versatile actress. Love her.

Stanley Tucci hated that role. Also Suzie really did kick him in the face trying to escape. Saoris(sp) Ronan (Irish girl who played Suzie Salmon) apologized to Stanley for injuring him. Side Note: Stanley is a very talented actor. He played the purple-haired TV show host in the Hunger Games. (Did you guys do the Hunger Games?)

Something I noticed after watching the movie after years was that if you look closely behind her he’s always watching her like in the mall he was watching her

It bothered me so much that her body was never found to give closure to the family. But that shows the reality of most missing persons cases. They don’t always get that closure. The other world was a good part of the movie it shows her transition into heaven and acceptance that she was murdered she goes from confused, angry, sadness, to acceptance.

This was filmed where it takes place, Norristown, PA, about 20 minutes from here. I ran into the PA at Starbucks buying about 12 coffees for the crew. Poor guy was somehow getting 12 coffees to his car and driving without spilling. Happy to say it's one out my favorite movies.

I explained all those "many ways" to my Mom, who became dumbfounded when I told her the biggest one was that Stanley Tucci was the bad guy, not only that but he played the role very well!! See in my young naive heart Stanley just can't play roles like that because he's always been my idea of "The Good Guy" and I didn't appreciate the changing of MY narrative concerning one of my favorite Actors!! For example: There are 3 movies (that I remember seeing) where Keanu Reeves plays a bad guy. Those movies didn't do so well because a lot of people had a hard time believing he was the bad guy. The book was worse because they actually described what happened to her ! I remember seeing this movie in the theater and thinking is was sad but wonderful at the same time!

My mum took me to the movie theater to watch this, I can't remember in what time of the year it came out so I was either 9/10. She made me watch the movie to show me to never trust a stranger, especially if I'm alone, let alone a "trusty" neighbor so I'm really grateful she made me watch it as a little girl, now as a 23 year old I can say that because of that movie I've saved myself from some suspicious situations growing up

This movie was based on a novel about the (real life) rape of the author. Years later, the man who was (wrongfully) convicted was exonerated. The story is tragic on many levels.

Now I know why Saoirse and Jake's characters in The Host seemed more comfortable around each other; the actors worked together in this film.

The movie is an alternate cut. In the original, he gets away, Scot free. My gf at the time made me watch this 12 years ago, and i was SO pissed at her...

Seeing this at 12 years old messed me up but I'm glad I was able to see this. I also would have loved if the family had the closer they deserved. That someone knew what happened, along with the other families who lives were effected by Stanley's characters actions. Now Stanley Tucci deserves all the awards because I disgusted and hate I felt for his character was very strong, he killed it honestly!

I have seen this movie a number of times because it's a masterclass in storytelling - and a difficult story to tell but more on that. Your reactions again were spot on. You criticise the nit picky things going on in the movie. The book was also a tour de force because you wish this and this and that could/would happen. Without those nit picky things you would have a very flat suspense/mystery. Those things is what makes a book and/or movie excel and your reactions only prove that it hit the spot and is a success. Hats off to Stanley Tucci who is one of our great actors but gets little in projects to act in. ( I just saw him last week in 2009s "Spotlight" with an all star cast). This is film is by the author Alice Sebold whom I briefly met her while I sat in on creative writing classes with Tess Gallagher, Raymond Carver, and Tobias Wolff. She and I attended Syracuse University ( we both graduated the same year in 1984: she a senior and I a grad student). In the early hours of May 8, 1981, while Sebold was a freshman at Syracuse University, she was assaulted and raped while walking home through a tunnel to an amphitheater near campus. She reported the crime to campus security and the police, who took her statement and investigated, but could not identify any suspects. Five months later, while walking down a street near the Syracuse campus, she encountered a man whom she believed to be the rapist. The man, Anthony Broadwater, ultimately served 16 years in prison, maintaining his innocence throughout. Because he would not admit to the attack, he was denied parole five times, Broadwater was released in 1999, and remained on New York's sex offender registry. He was exonerated in 2021, after a judge found serious issues with the original conviction. Alice wrote the novel "Lucky" based on this experience. She continued with a memoir writing about her experience after "Lucky" sank into oblivion. Her first successful book was "The Lovely Bones" continuing her rape experience but his book got rave reviews and was picked up for film rights. So, as the saying goes, in creative writing class "Wwhen in doubt about what you should write, write what you know."

I love this movie so much which might sound like a strange thing to say when I first say it but it helped me get over a lot of grief.

Such a beautiful but extremely devastatingly heart breaking movie. Saw it once and did not ever want to watch it again, just because of you know, how it ended for her, but I do think you guys are the only ones who have done a reaction to this movie and well done for doing so!

Sadly, what happened to susie is something that its not ficton in the real world , and there are so many girls who are victims of these kind of people, or at least have been in the presence of these kind of men. You can ask any woman you know if they've met someone that made them as uncomfortable as the cabin scene, i assure they will say yes.

The movie received negative Reviews by Critics, but became a moderate success at the box office, making $93 million dollars against a $60 million dollar budget. Ryan Gosling gained 60 lb to play the father, but dropped out due to creative differences with Jackson with discussing what the character would look like.

I remember reading this book early on in high school and was so worried when the movie came out that it wouldn't do the book justice but was pleasantly surprised in that the movie didn't disappoint compared to the book.

Tucci was just amazingly evil in this. Fabulous acting.

First time I watched this movie I was dying of a fever so the otherworldly scenes felt like a trip but this movie really made me cry hard, and for all that its forever burned into my memory!

Loved this movie. So well done. Tucci was great as the killer. I had the same feelings about her body but that happens a lot unfortunately. Many murders are either never solved or the body never found and it’s so sad. I believe in the afterlife so I have no problem in that he’ll be punished for what he did. I have to tell you what happened to me a long, long time ago. I was walking home from school with my brother and he wanted to take a shortcut. It meant jumping over hedges and I didn’t want to do that as I was wearing a dress. My brother left me and I continued on the street. Soon a car came by and a young man (I’d say late teens or early 20’s) asked me if I wanted a ride. I said no and continued on my walk. He must have driven around the block because he came by again. I remember my heart pounding when I saw him again. This time he stopped and opened the passenger door and said he would give me candy if I would get in. I was only 3 houses away from my house. Again I said no. I have to tell you that it was weird that no one was around. No neighbors or kids….just strange. But I ran home crying and remember talking to a state cop (he had that wide brim on his hat). He told me to always get the license plate. I was only 6 at the time. Thankfully, I was ok but sometimes I’ll think about it and wonder what would have happened to me had I gotten in the car with him. Obviously, he was up to no good. It kinda freaks me out. I loved the sister who got “revenge” on her own. She was brave. There was lots of foreshadowing of the icicles in the afterlife so the icicle facilitated his death. Anyway, I really liked the movie and even though its a tough subject it was worth filming it. Predators are like that….nice on the outside…trying to groom their victims but they’re so evil inside. Good review bros. 😀

First time I watched it I CRIED for hours. Because he should’ve been done way worse, the scene where they referenced the other girls really hurt my heart. The song omg

My heart has never been broken by a movie this much. I couldn’t stop thinking about Susie, I had to watch behind the scenes footage to remind myself that these were actors and she was still alive. It didn’t help.

This movie is a masterpiece. I cry every single time I watch it. And it's one of those movies that is good, every single time you watch...kudos to you both, for being the 1st reactors( that I've ever seen personally) to react to this great movie!!💞💞

You have no idea how much I needed this reaction. I've been in ER and needed to get my mind off the pain, then I saw the best brothers doing one of my fav movies. Helped more than morphine. I've got the same complaints as you. #1 some scenes went too long (Especially the underground scene). And shout out to Stanley Tucci who refused to do the rape scene. He was already disturbed enough by the part but did an amazing job. And I get in the end she was able to go to heaven by letting go. And between choosing justice and her first kiss was proof of that but I'm still angry. Not good enough for the family. And his death. Maybe if the girl he was preying on had turned around and beat him to death instead of just him slipping. Plus how did you not show the meeting the other victims in heaven scene lol. But still, one of my fav movies/book being reacted to my fav youtubers. You to should be professional movie critics. Better than Ebert and Siskel.

I can't remember the last time a movie brought me to tears as much as Lovely Bones. It was seeing it for the first time and then when we find out what really happened to Susie it was like an overdose of pain, man. That's where my admiration for Saoirse Ronan was born for being so brave and capable of making this movie at such a young age and putting herself in such a creepy situation, I know that Stanley Tucci did everything possible to make her feel safe and comfortable. Also he was so disgusted with the character what he was doing that changed his appearance completely.

Watched this movie for the first time as a senior in college with friends. We literally balled throughout the entire ending of the movie.

The ending of this movie made me angry cry. Yes he died and he would never be able to hurt anyone again, but all of those people never got justice. It's infuriating, but amazing writing.

Unfortunately there are many cases where justice fails, karma comes in a form that one doesn’t deserve (whether that being someone evil having not suffered more than their victims or good people having awful things happen), and where bodies don’t get found….

I absolutely get your frustrations. Most people have the same ones but I think it was supposed to make ppl feel like that bc no matter how whimsical it was made out to be in terms of the paranormal, the unsatisfying end seems purposeful to me in that most real cases of this nature end unsatisfactorily. A lot of kids who are victims of SA never get found even if the predator was. Still great reaction :) I thought it was too long too but PJ loves long movies 🤣

I remember when I saw this in theaters, when Mr. Harvey died, one dude was like, "That's right! Oh Yeah!!" everyone laughed and cheered. But god, I remember some of the stuff from the books. Like Mr. Harvey was still there after the book was taken by the police, and actually explained the evidence away, but I don't remember how the police/detective were finally convinced and tried pursuing him.

I remember reading this book - the murder was so difficult to get through. And Stanley Tucci plays this monster so well. He was such a good actor.

I think this movie is a critique on real life issues and how victims never see justice and the abuser got away with it, the intensity is a real-life issue for a lot of victims. I know you guys don't do requests a lot, but might I suggest the hunger games trilogy.
