He sure plays the character very well because he is legitimately creeping me out.

This scene Is so intense that you even start to feel the girl's emotions.

“I have to go”. Is so heartbreaking. She knows somethings wrong, she knows that he knows, and shes so scared. It’s horrible.

Honestly my worst nightmare.

The reason they did not film the r*pe scene was because the actor desperately did not want to even pretend to do something so vile to the young actress. It actually distressed him to consider it at all.

to everyone criticizing suzie's actions: at the very beginning of the movie, the character herself stated that it happened in the 70s, when the concept of stranger danger didn't exist (and neither did psychological profiling). reports of such cases weren't common, so the context of her being so naive is explained from the start. plus, he was her neighbor, which makes the case even more complicated and creepier

Stanley Tucci is an AMAZING actor. If he can creep me out in this and make me laugh in The Devil Wears Prada and Easy A, that's talent.

I'm SO happy they didn't film the rape scene. That was such a sickening and graphic part in the book.

It’s really gets me that he tells her to be polite in this scene. A lot of literature on abuse and trauma talks about how predators use the concept of politeness to guilt people into staying silent/being unable to cry for help/escape. It’s a really interesting detail they’ve added here. So awfully real.

i wanted her to escape so bad

In the scene you literally feel like her..the acting is so strong. You feel her dread as she realizes the enormous mistake she's made by following him into his lair and you feel her immense terror leading up to her death. Both are incredible actors in this role.

I remember a week before I started to walk to school my dad made me watch this to get the message across not to talk to strangers

When she said I have to leave and he replied "Don't be rude" I knew she was fucked.

When I was in junior high school, the art teacher seemed friendly and harmless, like Mr. Harvey. One day, he kept me after class to talk about my grade because it was a C. When he pulled my schedule up he saw I had multimedia production (movie making and editing) as a class, and started asking if I wanted a career in the industry and whatnot. I told him I do and we had a nice conversation about it. Then he asked what my other interests were, and 12 year old, Red-Dead-Redemption-1-Obsessed me told him I had a special fascination with firearms, specifically revolvers, and that I also liked Bowie knives. After I said that, he never talked to me again, unless it was something class-related. I didn't really think much about it, but five years later, in 2015, the news broke that he had been sexually assaulting boys. Six of his victims stepped forward and detailed how he would groom his victims starting first with conversations, then gifts, then luring them to his house, claiming that he had Hollywood connections and could help get students movie industry jobs. I'm pretty sure he had more victims because he had been doing it over a 15-Year period. He committed suicide during the trial so he never got fully prosecuted. He also posted bail immediately after bei g arrested, which itself is pretty horrifying. It's also really scary to think how close I came to being one of his victims, but was saved only by my 12 yr old edge-lord behavior.

Stanley Tucci is seriously one of the most underrated actors

The fact that she was just minutes away from her house is haunting and tragic all at the same time

His character was very wretched, but Stanley Tucci did a phenomenal job acting in this movie.

Her fate was sealed the moment she went to his little "hideout"

The “mmhmm mmhmm... “ noises are the worst. Hasty and devoid of empathy, like he’s just itching to get down to business. Mr Harvey’s voice is also so unnaturally deep and growly here too (as opposed to before he lured Susie underground). Like a wild animal about to devour its prey. Chills.

This scene scared me because I watched this when I was like 12 but watching this again, I can't help but think that Stanley Tucci did an amazing job at this and the fact that he didn't feel comfortable playing a child molester reassures me a thousand times more.

I hate the way he makes her feel. The way she said, "thanks." was very saddening to hear.

The sad thing is that it wasn’t her escaping it was her soul wishing that she did escape

This scene genuinely gave me such an unnerving and uncomfortable feeling. Props to these two 👏🏼

His eyes are so creepy.

when she says "it is its very special" in the shakey voice trying really hard to keep it together and keep it light in order not to set him off was so realistic

People should just generally stay away from old dudes that use the word neat to describe something of their own creation. Or just generally use the word neat.

I still can't believe this guy plays Caesar in hunger games, wow.

Almost every woman alive has had an unwanted encounter with a "creepy guy" at some point or other. Most of the encounters are harmless but my heart weeps for those girls and women who were victimized and killed. Unfortunately, we seem to always remember the names of the sick murderers and details about their lives but never seem to remember the names of their innocent victims.

Saoirse Ronan deserves more attention for her work. she's amazing.

Never trust people with a moustache

They way mr. Harvey says "no be polite" after Susie tells him she has to leave is so scary & intimidating. Us girls need to realize its okay to be rude to persistent strangers or ppl who are flat out being creepy

The most horrible thing is that we can tell, by the look of utter shock and dawning realization on Susie's face, that she understood what was up. That she knew she had just made the biggest mistake of her life right there, and that all hopes for her to be heard or rescued were vain. Makes me want to cry in frustration.

1:33 the way she agreed to please him, even though she was extremely uncomfortable is insanely detailed!!! the little breaths and how she said it quickly is exactly how a young girl like her would’ve said it! this movie never fails to blow my mind

this dialogue is written so well, because it highlights the specific fear of so many young women -being expected to entertain men’s expectations for the sake of “being polite” -not being able to talk freely -when susie expresses concern, he dismisses her and talks about something else -telling her she’s “not like other girls” to make her feel special, different, above them in maturity -keeping a monotone and serious tone of voice the entire time to make you feel like your emotions are excessive and you’re being paranoid

Scary clip. Much more frightening than if they actually showed the rape. His "be polite" and he sounds he makes are so damn creepy.

The fact it’s underground makes the entire situation so much more scary and terrifying.

This movie gives me feelings I've never felt before

I would've ran right when I saw him on the field.

The minute a guy says, “I’m not going to hurt you”…he’s going to hurt you.

I remember the day I watched this in a movie theater. During this scene, it was dead silent.

This part in the book was so disturbing to read. Although this scene in the movie adaptation doesn't portray everything described in the book, this scene still gives me chills. This is such a phenomenal movie. Saoirse Ronan and Stanley Tucci were fantastic in this.

That "you have to be polite" made me remember "teach your kids to prioritise being safe rather than being nice"

The 60 seconds leading up to this scene are the best part of the movie. Peter Jackson captures perfectly and palpably the feeling when the air goes out of the room as you realize that something that seemed fun and harmless is actually a thing of great danger and horror. You can feel it with her. (The rest of the movie is hit and miss, but this sequence is so honest and true, a great moment in cinema-if hard to watch.)

The 'mhm's are one of the most unsettling parts for me in this scene.

I told my son early that adults make friends with other adults, not kids. Also, that adults don't need help from or need to keep secrets with children. He understood and we still talk about how to safely navigate the world now that he is a teenager.

My dad watched this movie and wouldn’t let me leave the house unsupervised for two weeks, and then pulled me in the house and almost called the cops when I said hi to a male neighbor. Safe to say this movie scarred him for life.

The fact that he dug a humongous hole, bought all these toys and stuff to lure, and committed to this just to satisfy his murderous urge he had for her makes it all the more terrible. Really shows how for lengths a killer will go just to meet his deeds

I'm always careful who I talk to. Last year, a man in a van stopped by me when I was walking to school and asked me if I wanted a ride. I said no. I continued walking and he followed me to school. When I got out the man was in the front of the school, so I through the back way and got home safely. I haven't seen him since then.

Stanley Tucci was nominated for an Oscar for this role- he should've won it.

This scene affected me really badly. I went through something very much like this a few years ago but luckily I did make it out alive. The fear, the sinking feeling in my chest, the disgust, the anxiety - i felt it all again while watching this. You feel confused at first and then when you realize what you've gotten yourself into, you're absolutely frozen. My mom watched this with me but I've never told her about my experience so it was really hard for me to control myself and not show how disturbed I was in front of her.

Jesus Christ, this scene is suspenseful.

A lot of people say to their kids “don’t talk to strangers” but 95% of abductions and murders happen from people that the victim knew.

It feels so scary because they did this scene so perfectly. You feel scared because you can see her becoming more alarmed knowing something will happen and there's no escape. Just imagine knowing there's nothing you can do to prevent harm.

"Do you have a boyfriend?" This dude is a *CREEP*

I admit this right now, this scene is horrifying to me.

You can see the moment where she realised what was going to happen, and that’s what makes the scene even more heartbreaking

This scene gives me the creeps more than any horror movie!

How creepy when he says “I knew you weren’t like those other girls”

I’m glad my parents showed me this movie as a kid because it made me be more careful of strangers around me as unfortunately we live in a very cruel world. When my children are of age I’ll be showing them this movie too because it seems things are only getting worse

I think part of what makes this scene so tense is that we’re not shocked like Susy to realize what’s about to happen. From the start we know what is coming and this whole time we have to watch her slowly come to terms with it, powerless to help.

I feel every. Single. Emotion Susie is having in this scene. My stomach is in knots, I am terrified, and just want her to get out of there. I don't know how the rest of this movie was, but this scene was beyond phenomenal.

Once she got in the hole it was hell. She had no way out. If I were her i would call me mom or someone if I could I read this book for english class

This movie messed me up as a kid. Grew up with it playing in my grandmothers house all the time. My grandfather loved this film.

Eww, I hate how he's breathing and everything yuck!

You know, the scary thing is that she always knew him as her friendly neighbour so of course she wouldn't have suspected him of something i like this. You really can't trust anyone now. Stay safe everyone, I pray that no one in this world ever has to suffer an ordeal like this

Anybody ever watch a movie countless times and even though you know what's going to happen in your mind you're hoping the outcome is different? This was one of those movies 😢

Tucci did such an amazing job, i really didn't even recognize him at first. I don't know why he doesn't do more serious roles.

The book was much more graphic: From the book: Chapter One Page 8-11 Mr. Harvey asked me if I would like a refreshment. That was how he put it. I said I had to go home. “Be polite and have a Coke,” he said. “I’m sure the other kids would.” “What other kids?” “I built this for the kids in the neighborhood. I thought it could be some sort of clubhouse.” I don’t think I believed this even then. I thought he was lying, but I thought it was a pitiful lie. I imagined he was lonely. We had read about men like him in health class. Men who never married and ate frozen meals every night and were so afraid of rejection that they didn’t even own pets. I felt sorry for him. “Okay,” I said, “I’ll have a Coke.” In a little while he said, “Aren’t you warm, Susie? Why don’t you take off your parka.” I did. After this he said, “You’re very pretty, Susie.” “Thanks,” I said, even though he gave me what my friend Clarissa and I had dubbed the skeevies. “Do you have a boyfriend?” “No, Mr. Harvey,” I said. I swallowed the rest of my Coke, which was a lot, and said, “I got to go, Mr. Harvey. This is a cool place, but I have to go.” He stood up and did his hunchback number by the six dug-in steps that led to the world. “I don’t know why you think you’re leaving.” I talked so that I would not have to take in this knowledge: Mr. Harvey was no character. When I would not - was it only that, only that I would not follow his suggestion? - he leaned to the side and felt, over his head, across the ledge where his razor and shaving cream sat. He brought back a knife. Unsheathed, it smiled at me, curving up in a grin. He took the hat from my mouth. “Tell me you love me,” he said. Gently, I did. The end came anyway.

I am glad the movie didn't portray what happened in the book. I read the book, and this scene was horrifying to read. Mr. Harvey rapes her, and after that, he cuts her body up into little pieces and puts them in a safe-in the movie, he pushes the safe in the sink hole, and the audience is able to guess what's in there, without this back ground story. If the film DID follow the book at this scene, I probably would have thrown up, it's so awful.

I remember when I first saw it I genuinely thought she escaped when she kicked him in the face. So sad.

Also all those grunts he makes like at 0:02, it really sells the characters intentions.

I’m surprised no one else has mentioned how he’s blocking the ladder as he’s showing her the place. Sly way to keep her from leaving.

As someone who went through something similar at a very young age, I can assure you they did a very good job portraying the creepiness of the situation without being vile and insensitive, the way he looks at her, the way he grabs on her when she wanted to run, the way she's terrified to look at him and how she tried to climb up those stairs with everything she's got, it's so vivid to me cause I did the same and tried my hardest to escape and fortunately succeeded to although the experience is horrifying and haunting. This is uncomfortable to watch yet it portrays reality which is nothing but ugly and bitter.

Ugh this part gets me because you can tell that she knew she wasn’t getting out of there. Such wonderful acting, such hard parts to play

Bad idea to watch this at night, now I can't sleep...

I remember when I was 12 and picked up the book not having a single clue what it was about and when I got to the chapter where they go into explicit detail about the abuse I literally could not finish the book because I felt sick reading it. Good call to cut the scene out!

This is so sad.

I remember watching this movie when i was 11 or 12, at night with my older sister, alone in our house. When i remember myself watching that movie 6 years ago, i will always remember the ambiance of that memory. The light from our living room was only the colors coming from the television, since our lights were dimmed down. I didn't understand the movie whatsoever, but what i did know was that it creeped the shit out of me, and also incited one of the first distinctly melancholy feelings i got from a movie. This movie had such profound ambiance which it succesfully communicated that even a child watching it with no clear understanding yet of concepts such as rape, molestation and murder got the feeling of discomfort and fear.

Originally tucci refused to do this part but after talking to her they decided to go ahead with the film and they kept talking to each other to make sure they were ok during each scene. At one point she lost it and was crying so bad he went to go make sure she was able to continue the film making.

The little noise he does “mmmhhm” just just creeps me out

What makes this scene so difficult, personally for me, is that we all know of the poor women, young girls and little girls who have actually Endured this final sick part of their lives. Imagine knowing that this man infront of you was about to kill or harm you? It hurts me so much inside. RIP TO ALL THE SUSIE SALMONS ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I can't imagine how difficult the role was for him. I love Stanley Tucci. He's one of my favorite actors.

Worst saddest scene ever! I could literally feel Susie's fear, it made me uncomfortable. "Susie: I died under the ground where no one could hear me"

Ironically the young actress who plays Susie kept asking Stanley Tucci (the actor who played Mr.Harvey) if he was ok, she probably could tell how distressing the roll was for him.

Never trust anyone you don't know, but always trust Stanley Tucci. Stanley Tucci is amazing!
