CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mr. Harvey (Stanley Tucci) lures Susie (Saoirse Ronan) into his underground hideaway.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) is just experiencing the pangs of first love when she's viciously murdered by her neighbor Mr. Harvey (Stanley Tucci), a predatory wolf in J.C. Penney clothing. As her family slowly begins drifting apart while struggling to make sense of their loss, Susie bravely attempts to find her footing in the hereafter. Meanwhile, down on earth, Mr. Harvey is feeling confident that he's covered his tracks well enough to get away with the crime, and begins honing in on his next victim -- Susie's younger sister, Lindsey (Rose McIver), who's beginning to suspect that he's not the harmless suburbanite he portrays himself to be. Director Peter Jackson reteams with King Kong and Lord of the Rings trilogy co-screenwriters Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh to adapt Alice Sebold's bestselling novel for the big screen.

This movie taught me that it's not just strangers you have to watch out for, it's also people you know. I remember hearing a story about a girl accepting a ride from someone and how she trusted him because he was her friend's father. It didn't end well.

Yep, this clip doesn’t show the beginning of the scene, where Susie thought the concept of creating a hideout for the kids was cool and enthusiastically followed to check it out. But when she actually read the situation down there, it made her realize just how creepy it was for a middle aged man to do this.

She looks longingly at the ladder, and knows that it's going to be nearly impossible for her to scale it and get the door open without being stopped by Mr. Harvey, but she has to take that chance. He also wants her to do it; because that confirms that he is wielding great power over her. He's like a spider waiting on a fly that has wandered into its web to make a move before devouring it.

The reason they did not film the r*pe scene was because the actor desperately did not want to even pretend to do something so vile to the young actress. It actually distressed him to consider it at all.

to everyone criticizing suzie's actions: at the very beginning of the movie, the character herself stated that it happened in the 70s, when the concept of stranger danger didn't exist (and neither did psychological profiling). reports of such cases weren't common, so the context of her being so naive is explained from the start. plus, he was her neighbor, which makes the case even more complicated and creepier
@k3upikachu

it's also worth pointing out that we're taught as children to be polite to adults, especially girls. we're taught to show deference to our elders and that causes us to ignore our own instincts when they're screaming at us that a situation isn't safe. i'm 29 and still trying to unlearn that.

It’s really gets me that he tells her to be polite in this scene. A lot of literature on abuse and trauma talks about how predators use the concept of politeness to guilt people into staying silent/being unable to cry for help/escape. It’s a really interesting detail they’ve added here. So awfully real.

I was sa as a child. This is too accurate. I like how they incorporated that she tried to appease him after she realizes she made a huge mistake. Because that is how children react. I did that too. A lot say, you could have done more or scream louder to protect yourself. Thry don't understand. In my case it was also someone very close to my family whom I was supposed to obey, respect and treat politely and friendly.

+Kathrine Elizabeth every single person can hurt you, that's the problem. don't trust anybody, ever. not even your own partner, not even your family, they can do stuff to you, never ever trust anybody so much, that's dangerous, you're giving yourself to the devil. you never know what people are capable of.
@dixienormous6969
@dixienormous6969 9 лет назад
Andrew no its just the truth. There are so many fake people in this world, who can you trust? People can hurt you once they gain your trust, it's so easy. I myself am a really clingy person, and I hate it when I trust people so much, sometimes it gets me in deep shit. So I don't want to trust people but some people are just so good at making you trust in them so much especially if they're your best friends. Trust is a huge thing, it's not something to play around with. People who used to trust so much now don't trust at all because of what happened to them, trust is something so dangerous.
@dixienormous6969
@dixienormous6969 9 лет назад
Andrew maybe your family can kill you one day or your girlfriend can poison you, people can explode any moment, we're like time bombs, I don't even trust my family members sometimes, even my own dad, sometimes my mum but that's rare, mostly my dad. Your friends can betray you too. But its totally up to you on who you wanna trust. This is just what I think and how I feel.

When I was in junior high school, the art teacher seemed friendly and harmless, like Mr. Harvey. One day, he kept me after class to talk about my grade because it was a C. When he pulled my schedule up he saw I had multimedia production (movie making and editing) as a class, and started asking if I wanted a career in the industry and whatnot. I told him I do and we had a nice conversation about it. Then he asked what my other interests were, and 12 year old, Red-Dead-Redemption-1-Obsessed me told him I had a special fascination with firearms, specifically revolvers, and that I also liked Bowie knives. After I said that, he never talked to me again, unless it was something class-related. I didn't really think much about it, but five years later, in 2015, the news broke that he had been sexually assaulting boys. Six of his victims stepped forward and detailed how he would groom his victims starting first with conversations, then gifts, then luring them to his house, claiming that he had Hollywood connections and could help get students movie industry jobs. I'm pretty sure he had more victims because he had been doing it over a 15-Year period. He committed suicide during the trial so he never got fully prosecuted. He also posted bail immediately after bei g arrested, which itself is pretty horrifying. It's also really scary to think how close I came to being one of his victims, but was saved only by my 12 yr old edge-lord behavior.

Almost every woman alive has had an unwanted encounter with a "creepy guy" at some point or other. Most of the encounters are harmless but my heart weeps for those girls and women who were victimized and killed. Unfortunately, we seem to always remember the names of the sick murderers and details about their lives but never seem to remember the names of their innocent victims.

this dialogue is written so well, because it highlights the specific fear of so many young women -being expected to entertain men’s expectations for the sake of “being polite” -not being able to talk freely -when susie expresses concern, he dismisses her and talks about something else -telling her she’s “not like other girls” to make her feel special, different, above them in maturity -keeping a monotone and serious tone of voice the entire time to make you feel like your emotions are excessive and you’re being paranoid

The 60 seconds leading up to this scene are the best part of the movie. Peter Jackson captures perfectly and palpably the feeling when the air goes out of the room as you realize that something that seemed fun and harmless is actually a thing of great danger and horror. You can feel it with her. (The rest of the movie is hit and miss, but this sequence is so honest and true, a great moment in cinema-if hard to watch.)

Yes, that scene was gut-wrenching to watch. I read on Wikipedia, that the audience in a sneak preview of the film felt that the monster Harvey’s death was not satisfying enough. So Peter Jackson changed the scene to show Harvey falling to his death off of that cliff. I personally would have preferred to have seen that savage suffer the same fate as the eunuchs of Ancient Rome, with his “bits” forced down his throat before finally tossing him into a raging bonfire. That would have been a condign punishment for that animal.

The book was much more graphic: From the book: Chapter One Page 8-11 Mr. Harvey asked me if I would like a refreshment. That was how he put it. I said I had to go home. “Be polite and have a Coke,” he said. “I’m sure the other kids would.” “What other kids?” “I built this for the kids in the neighborhood. I thought it could be some sort of clubhouse.” I don’t think I believed this even then. I thought he was lying, but I thought it was a pitiful lie. I imagined he was lonely. We had read about men like him in health class. Men who never married and ate frozen meals every night and were so afraid of rejection that they didn’t even own pets. I felt sorry for him. “Okay,” I said, “I’ll have a Coke.” In a little while he said, “Aren’t you warm, Susie? Why don’t you take off your parka.” I did. After this he said, “You’re very pretty, Susie.” “Thanks,” I said, even though he gave me what my friend Clarissa and I had dubbed the skeevies. “Do you have a boyfriend?” “No, Mr. Harvey,” I said. I swallowed the rest of my Coke, which was a lot, and said, “I got to go, Mr. Harvey. This is a cool place, but I have to go.” He stood up and did his hunchback number by the six dug-in steps that led to the world. “I don’t know why you think you’re leaving.” I talked so that I would not have to take in this knowledge: Mr. Harvey was no character. He made me feel skeevy and icky now that he was blocking the door. “Mr. Harvey, I really have to get home.” “Take off your clothes.” “What?” “Take your clothes off,” Mr. Harvey said. “I want to check that you’re still a virgin.” “I am, Mr. Harvey,” I said. “I want to make sure. Your parents will thank me.” “My parents?” “They only want good girls,” he said. “Mr. Harvey,” I said, “please let me leave.” “You aren’t leaving, Susie. You’re mine now.” Fitness was not a big thing back then; aerobics was barely a word. Girls were supposed to be soft, and only the girls we suspected were butch could climb the ropes at school. I fought hard. I fought as hard as I could not to let Mr. Harvey hurt me, but my hard-as-I-could was not hard enough, not even close, and I was soon lying down on the ground, in the ground, with him on top of me panting and sweating, having lost his glasses in the struggle. I was so alive then. I thought it was the worst thing in the world to be lying flat on my back with a sweating man on top of me. To be trapped inside the earth and have no one know where I was. I thought of my mother. My mother would be checking the dial of the clock on her oven. It was a new oven and she loved that it had a clock on it. “I can time things to the minute,” she told her own mother, a mother who couldn’t care less about ovens. She would be worried, but more angry than worried, at my lateness. As my father pulled into the garage, she would rush about, fixing him a cocktail, a dry sherry, and put on an exasperated face: “You know junior high,” she would say. “Maybe it’s Spring Fling.” “Abigail,” my father would say, “how can it be Spring Fling when it’s snowing?” Having failed with this, my mother might rush Buckley into the room and say, “Play with your father,” while she ducked into the kitchen and took a nip of sherry for herself. Mr. Harvey started to press his lips against mine. They were blubbery and wet and I wanted to scream but I was too afraid and too exhausted from the fight. I had been kissed once by someone I liked. His name was Ray and he was Indian. He had an accent and was dark. I wasn’t supposed to like him. Clarissa called his large eyes, with their half-dosed lids, “freak-a-delic,” but he was nice and smart and helped me cheat on my algebra exam while pretending he hadn’t. He kissed me by my locker the day before we turned in our photos for the yearbook. When the yearbook came out at the end of the summer, I saw that under his picture he had answered the standard “My heart belongs to” with “Susie Salmon.” I guess he had had plans. I remember that his lips were chapped. “Don’t, Mr. Harvey,” I managed, and I kept saying that one word a lot. Don’t. And I said please a lot too. Franny told me that almost everyone begged “please” before dying. “I want you, Susie,” he said. “Please,” I said. “Don’t,” I said. Sometimes I combined them. “Please don’t” or “Don’t please.” It was like insisting that a key works when it doesn’t or yelling “I’ve got it, I’ve got it, I’ve got it” as a softball goes sailing over you into the stands. “Please don’t.” But he grew tired of hearing me plead. He reached into the pocket of my parka and balled up the hat my mother had made me, smashing it into my mouth. The only sound I made after that was the weak tinkling of bells. As he kissed his wet lips down my face and neck and then began to shove his hands up under my shirt, I wept. I began to leave my body; I began to inhabit the air and the silence. I wept and struggled so I would not feel. He ripped open my pants, not having found the invisible zipper my mother had artfully sewn into their side. “Big white panties,” he said. I felt huge and bloated. I felt like a sea in which he stood and pissed and shat. I felt the corners of my body were turning in on themselves and out, like in cat’s cradle, which I played with Lindsey just to make her happy. He started working himself over me. “Susie! Susie!” I heard my mother calling. “Dinner is ready.” He was inside me. He was grunting. “We’re having string beans and lamb.” I was the mortar, he was the pestle. “Your brother has a new finger painting, and I made apple crumb cake.” Mr. Harvey made me lie still underneath him and listen to the beating of his heart and the beating of mine. How mine skipped like a rabbit, and how his thudded, a hammer against cloth. We lay there with our bodies touching, and, as I shook, a powerful knowledge took hold. He had done this thing to me and I had lived. That was all. I was still breathing. I heard his heart. I smelled his breath. The dark earth surrounding us smelled like what it was, moist dirt where worms and animals lived their daily lives. I could have yelled for hours. I knew he was going to kill me. I did not realize then that I was an animal already dying. “Why don’t you get up?” Mr. Harvey said as he rolled to the side and then crouched over me. His voice was gentle, encouraging, a lover’s voice on a late morning. A suggestion, not a command. I could not move. I could not get up. When I would not - was it only that, only that I would not follow his suggestion? - he leaned to the side and felt, over his head, across the ledge where his razor and shaving cream sat. He brought back a knife. Unsheathed, it smiled at me, curving up in a grin. He took the hat from my mouth. “Tell me you love me,” he said. Gently, I did. The end came anyway.

I am glad the movie didn't portray what happened in the book. I read the book, and this scene was horrifying to read. Mr. Harvey rapes her, and after that, he cuts her body up into little pieces and puts them in a safe-in the movie, he pushes the safe in the sink hole, and the audience is able to guess what's in there, without this back ground story. If the film DID follow the book at this scene, I probably would have thrown up, it's so awful.

That is so sad and disturbing. They probably left that stuff out to avoid getting an R rating, or just because it would be so horrifying to see.

+CherryFrog321 yea same happened with the movie Hounddog, they actually showed dakota fanning's rape scene. i remember seeing it on the news and everything and how people didn't like the fact that they did that. also the movie Bastard Out of Carolina, the uncut version which is on youtube i believe, showed Bones getting raped. both those movies are rated r, so i'm guessing they left the rape scene out for this movie so it wouldn't be rated r like you said

As someone who went through something similar at a very young age, I can assure you they did a very good job portraying the creepiness of the situation without being vile and insensitive, the way he looks at her, the way he grabs on her when she wanted to run, the way she's terrified to look at him and how she tried to climb up those stairs with everything she's got, it's so vivid to me cause I did the same and tried my hardest to escape and fortunately succeeded to although the experience is horrifying and haunting. This is uncomfortable to watch yet it portrays reality which is nothing but ugly and bitter.

I remember when I was 12 and picked up the book not having a single clue what it was about and when I got to the chapter where they go into explicit detail about the abuse I literally could not finish the book because I felt sick reading it. Good call to cut the scene out!

I remember watching this movie when i was 11 or 12, at night with my older sister, alone in our house. When i remember myself watching that movie 6 years ago, i will always remember the ambiance of that memory. The light from our living room was only the colors coming from the television, since our lights were dimmed down. I didn't understand the movie whatsoever, but what i did know was that it creeped the shit out of me, and also incited one of the first distinctly melancholy feelings i got from a movie. This movie had such profound ambiance which it succesfully communicated that even a child watching it with no clear understanding yet of concepts such as rape, molestation and murder got the feeling of discomfort and fear.

Originally tucci refused to do this part but after talking to her they decided to go ahead with the film and they kept talking to each other to make sure they were ok during each scene. At one point she lost it and was crying so bad he went to go make sure she was able to continue the film making.

What makes this scene so difficult, personally for me, is that we all know of the poor women, young girls and little girls who have actually Endured this final sick part of their lives. Imagine knowing that this man infront of you was about to kill or harm you? It hurts me so much inside. RIP TO ALL THE SUSIE SALMONS ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Ironically the young actress who plays Susie kept asking Stanley Tucci (the actor who played Mr.Harvey) if he was ok, she probably could tell how distressing the roll was for him.
