This is all the build updates from the Low Curves deck we just finished. This is probably the shortest supercut we've done.

love the thinking of leaving the last edge open to finish the last board a full board without cutting

Wow, You are on a whole different level! I have built a lot of decks and learning tons from you, thank you for taking the time and creating some of the best content I’ve seen. How in the world do you estimate a deck like this?

Man, you should not have shown me that you can bend composite boards! 😏 Super cool work Bro!

I'm surprised that the last deck lasted 25 years. Where I live if you build that low they rot out in 5 or 6 years. I'd think a patio would be a better choice since it's so low anyway.

awesome work! @drdecks how would you build a Low Deck in an HOA where digging is prohibited due to irrigation being just below the surface?

Hey buddy, pier blocks are cool, but, as a building inspector you should explain to your peeps that you can only use the pier blocks if a deck is NOT ATTACHED to the house. The reason for this is, if attached to the house, it becomes part of the primary structure, and therefore requires footings. Not attached to the house, it becomes an accessory structure, and as such, does not require footings. The only issue is, as an accessory structure, most municipalities have a code stating accessory structures need to be x amount of feet from the primary. That being said, I don’t think most inspectors would care for a ground level deck…it’s just like a paver patio..the blocks are more for stability than frost protection. Anyway, nice job, looks great. You know what you’re doing. I just thought it would be helpful to people watching so they understand you can’t just stick the pier blocks anywhere. Plus, it makes you look smart…lol. I’m liking the curves. I just ordered the heatcon for a side job I’m doing. Good stuff. Keep it up. Best Rick

How is he cutting the curves in the wood with the framing?

I agree this is art work instead of quick construction work. The plant in the background looks nice as well. Is it black bamboo? You mentioned Cutek Extreme is applied at cut spot. How does it compare to copper naphthenate for this kind of application in terms preserving wood from decay?

For perfection you need the skill and the math... learn the trade and learn the math and used together you’ll finish with perfection.

You guys did all that framing in 3-4 days ? Holy crap that’s fast. Low clearance, curved decking is not easy. If it was, Everyone could do it.

Ive never done a curved deck. That looks like a pain though. How are you templating the curve on the framing? For inside stuff I usually lay it out and just use the old school pencil on a string or piece of wood but I dont think that would work great outside on the uneven ground

How much can I expect a 20’x5-1/2” Azek deck board to grow in the sun here in Washington state? Assume the decking is installed in the winter. I’m trying to plan where my perpendicular boards will run into the perimeter picture frame board.

No. The equipment is so specific that it is not rented out. We do create curved planks for other clients if you’re interested

Where can I purchase the materials that are used to bend the wood?
@joehardin
@joehardin 2 года назад
Options are either build your own box (I've heard of people using baseboard heaters in this application), Trex CustomCurve machine (about $6k), or Heatcon heating blanket set (about $3k). May be able to call a lumber yard in your area that sells composite deck because sometimes they rent out heaters to contractors. I've also heard it's easier to bend azek or timebertek than it is trex, so i think people tend to get those for the curved boards even if they got trex for the rest of the deck. You can also bend railing but it takes some experimentation.
