I’m a Christian. I’m certainly no expert on the Lubavitcher. But that modern Rabbi saying that these people have “quick easy answers” is insane. These people study volumes and debate endlessly. There’s nothing easy about this
I want to say dear brother I see you & to stand up for Jews & recognize the study beauty & complexity is very touching. May Ha-Kodesh Baruch Hu bless you & your loved ones.
I'm a Lubavitcher who was born in 1996 after we couldn't see the Rebbe anymore but I feel very proud being part of this amazing movement which is so enriching I can't describe it in words.
Ahhhhh....seeing the Rebbe giving out cups of the wine blessed by his holy lips. Remembering receiving his blessing personally with a smiling face...such memories!
What I think is interesting about American Jewry v British Jewry is that whilst there are large amounts of Chasidim in the US, establishment Jewry isn't Orthodox, but more liberal. But in the UK, the mainstream is Orthodox and it is now common for Chabad rabbis to lead mainstream large London shuls, like Yitzchak Schochet or Herschel Radar.
+Hi Yigo Another related thing there is you have a religiously left wing modern orthodox like the United Synagogue chain of Shuls, where the practise might range from conservative to orthodox but the professed belief is Orthodox.. By having a welcoming nominally orthodox option, it means that Jews that might otherwise consider a conservative synagugoe, stay in an orthodox shul. And while somewhat minimal possibily, keep to the religion of their ancestors. Really more conservative than the so-called conservative movement.
The BBC couldn't have picked "a better narrator" than Sarah Dunnant...today 71 of age. She is 1/2 Welsh & 1/2 French but her lack of knowledge in History, "helped" her make fatal mistakes in her narration. Unforgivable for a BBC messenger.
Baruch HaShem for the great work CHABAD does around this world. I admit it has taken many years fully to accept the teachings of CHABAD. It will dedication and many hours of studies of Tanya especially being truthful to one's inner self !
This HALF-JEW has studied many years also. Tanya is the Mystical Book *( aka the CHABAD BIBLE ) and much is based on Kabbalah. What do you make of the TANYA ???
Wonderful to see 770 in the late 80's, but the underlying narrative is deeply disingenuous and tries from the outset to portray Chabad Lubavitch and the hasidic way-of-life in an unfair, negative light. I don't mind secular people, atheists, non-Jews, anyone! But I think a 'documentary' has a duty to try see beyond its own social, cultural, and spiritual presuppositions.
It's interesting that the Chabad Movement seems to place little value on an aesthetic environment. If this video is truly representative of the Crown Heights community, there are few, if any, decorative elements in interiors or exteriors. This extends to personal appearance, without concern for the dictates of fashion clothing.
You couldn't be more wrong! Remember the year that this was filmed and realize that was the style back then! Like when the wife is buying a new sheitl and us talking about what is stylish! Chabadniks are actually the MOST stylish amongst the Chassidim. NOT the most stylish among the Modern Orthodox but certainly amongst the different chassidic groups.
I was in New York City around this time. I remember seeing a Mitzvah Tank pull up and park. As the Lubavitchers prepared to disembark two eggs were dropped on the van from a balcony. Without getting out, the Mitzvah Tank pulled away from the curb and went down the street.
Thanks for the likes on my comment but I do need to clarify something. I wasn't at all happy that this happened. In fact, it rather upset me that people would be that ignorant to do something like that.
@@gendermapper5995 They approach people and ask if they are Jewish and if they are try to welcome them to become more religious. People can easily say no to them and say Shalom and walk off.
@@moeyhannon5463 I'm aware. I'm deeply into the chabad movement, I was implying that their mitzva tanks and outreach are good things and the story reflected a misguided approach to the secular world by saying they don't interact. They are intrinsic.
I agree! I spent many days and weeks in Crown Heights and other places with Lubavitch Hasidim in 1987&1988 to write a term paper. I’m Traditional Catholic myself, but was not very observant at that time. G-d used them in my decision to convert to Traditional Catholic in 2000. Even I know some of the narrator’s comments are away off base!
@@Nonameforyoudangit well I was raised in a conservative shul but just finding out about all the sects of orthodoxy like telz yeshiva in Chicago it’s very different and intrigued me.
This documentary is extremely superficial and neglects the deeply spiritual but rooted in the world aspects of Chasidism and also the historical roots of the movement which was revolutionary to Judaism. Chabad uniquely of other Orthodox movements is accepting of the world, of others, outward-looking and modern as well as traditional and biblical. It is truly a model for the world in living a godly life. Along with the Amish I admire it very greatly as a social system and lifestyle; simlicity and godliness, compassion and kindness. We need the old Judaeo-Christian models that grounded Western civilisation more than ever in this modern life, with all its unhappiness and turmoils.
THIS. I am more of a conservative Jew, but the Chabad movement has given me so much information about the Torah, about the ideas, about the history of our people. Without their guidance I could not perform the Mitzvot in the proper way. Especially during these terrible times of COVID-19
what it also neglects is the blatant rascism in chabad. sephardic Jews are treated like cuthians. My mother was forced to clean the entire dormitory, whilst having a critcal lung infection. Then she crawled to the medic, who nearly passed out. had she came from a rich family she would have been given a private doctor to attend her needs
Lubavitch came and found me in prison and brought me back to Judaism.and to the tree of life .I love the Rebbe if it wasn't for him id still be in bondage.long live Rebbe king moshiac forever and ever
So, it was "2,000 ago when they received the Torah" ? A bit further back than that Sweetie ! Makes you wonder about the amount of actual knowledge of Jewish History that the Producers of this Documentary actually had before making this Program.
The Rebbe never went to Israel bc he said if he went, he wouldn't be allowed to leave. There are, however, a lot of Chabadniks in Israel (they multiply quickly!).
If only you knew what that meant you idiot! The messiah comes at the end of time in a time of great rebellation. So you are cheering for the end of the world coz you want your messiah, sick people!
@@maartenvandenberg4825 Messiah already came, he will come back in all his glory at End Times. However Jws waiting for the false messiah sadly, but a lot will repent before Judgement day
They talk about not touching woman is something odd for the Jews...that is the law for Jews. As for venerating a Rebbe there are many rabbis who are venerated. As for Jewish dress and what they must eat n the daily life mentioned in the documentary....that’s the life of many or most Orthodox Jews. Hair covering the head, wigs are iffy to many though, they must eat kosher, they don’t marry non Jews or date, wearing tefillin, the mikvoh etc. chabad is no different
Veneration is to be distinguished from worship! I’m Traditional Catholic and get accused of worshipping Mary, the Saints, pictures, statues, the priest, etc.
Nobody. This distinguishes the Lubavitch from other Hasidim. Of course, there are leading, and competing scholars of the Rebbe whom people side with this one, or the other.
Kapparoth is something I don't like .... poor chickens .... sorry. I have had the misfortune to watch documentaries that portray the principles of Judaism as being a bit crazed and beyond. The media seem to focus on the Chabad Hassidic Haredi congregation as if nuts and weird in a negative way. If the media would do their research they might realize that certain rituals and customs are beneficial. I would say that the swinging of incense and a confession box is alien to my thought and in reply, the Dissolution of the Monasteries was very negative and disruptive. I guess there are lots of ways of embracing G-d. Unfortunately, some documentaries I have watched have always as I see them hovered towards the negative.
@@birdlynn417 No it isn't. No physical harm comes to the chicken from being revolved around your head two or three times. Tzaar Baalei Chayim - causing pain to animals - is actually forbidden in Judaism according to the Torah.
@@creepybastard3165 I lived in the community for 5 years and I can tell you that that is simply not true. Perhaps in Yom Kippur and a couple other holidays one may spend all day in services, but everyone I knew in the community went to work right after morning services. There is actually a very high value to infuse spirituality in the mundane average workday, which one cannot do unless you are engaged in the ordinary world daily.
Sadly, they collect tons of welfare money. The women have loads of children, and many of the men just study Torah. Thus, they are very poor. Collecting taxpayer-funded aid seems to be very much at odds with their refusal to assimilate.
Again, Chabad is not the claim that the Rebbe provides the Chabad, Chabad was founded by Rabbi Zalman of Liadi. I encourage everyone who watches this very biased and cynical video to do their own research
Please be advised, all the Jews follow HM and his holy Torah, which is also known as the Five Books of Moshe Rabbeinu. There is no new Torah for the Jews to believe in. Ani Maamin be emunah shleiva. The new Testament is new Torah. To the Jews there is no truth to it and to believe in any of it brings down all the curses of Egypt and all the the remaining curses of Torah upon it's believers.
