I got one a few months ago from a snagged anchor rope. Hooks were rusted off, bottom was more Perl but the top was greenish crawdad pattern. I slapped some hooks on and am ready to go again. Funny is the anchor chain was rusted out which allowed me to pull up the rope and part of the chain along with a ton of line and hooks. Raunchy as it was I still pulled the thing out on my boat and trashed it in the bin. You’re Welcome bass fishers at Saguaro Lake “Land of the Giants”

Man that brings back memories. I had a bunch of those baits and still have a few. In the early 90s my home lake was lake Lewisville. My favorite patterns was to tune one to run right and one to run left. Then I would fish the tire reef at one of the big Marinas. The bait would only run about 6 feet deep but I would fish parallel to the tires and that little crank would get under the tires, crashing into them as I went. Caught lots of limits and never even ran my big motor. My best was a 9.8 in early May. Still my PB. I still use that technique for fishing floating docks .

Hey Keith, what’s the significance of tuning the bait to run right or left?
@Brownwood09
@Brownwood09 Год назад
@@granthibberd6069 it will dive underneath the cover, tires or dock. I could get them to run 3 or 4 feet off center, getting underneath the tires or dock to fish that would never see a straight running crank.

Thanks Randy. The Rebel Deep Wee R in Tennessee Shad was my first crankbait in the early eighties. I still have many of the original one my parents stuffed in my Christmas stocking. I also have some of the original packaging on display in my tackle shop. Ive collected over 100 of these gems over the years from EBay. The still fish awesome here in California on Shasta, Oroville, and the Delta. They are always on my boat even if I don’t throw them. Takes me back to a simpler time fishing from my plastic Coleman Crawdad Jon boat with a 5 HP Gamefisher from Sears.

I used to love fishing my deep wee R’s. I had the chrome side and black top, and white mat side and black top and crawfish pattern. I thought their small to medium size was excellent. There were more small fish in my lakes who could bite it. My other favorites were the Cordell little and Big “o’s” and Arbogast mudbugs. Excellent memories. There was also the Rebel Super R.

Great story and funny thing is how many fish you can still catch on the old school lures. New, current lures, are not always better. One of my best topwater lures is the old clear tiny torpedo, and the clear torpedo. I will remove the prop off the clear torpedo, add a living rubber over the rear hook, and twitch it , walking it like a spook. Very effective if a quiet presentation is needed. I will also paint the silhouette of a dragon fly body on the underneath side with a wet paint pen which has been very effective in summer.

For me (and I’m not a Pro) it was the Bomber Hellbender and the Lazy Ike… I fished those in the early 80’s and would fight with my Dad about how long each of us was “allowed” to use it, before having to relinquish it to the other person …

On the subject matter of sport where people wait a long time to make it (or don't). Teddy Atlas was talking about the combative sports and boxing business. In the most recent episode of his boxing podcast. And there was criticism of one of the competitors from fans. The competitor in question was viewed to having won too 'easy' a decision in a match. Teddy's comments, struck home with me. I thought they were kind of immortal words. Words that have been spoken by trainers to younger sports people. Over centuries. Lots of people felt the competitor did not earn the decision. Teddy just said. In this business I can tell you, everyone ends up earning it.

I have a couple tricks to share with you Randy. You can use a threading needle to open split rings for putting trebles back on your lures easier without poking your fingers. Just hold the lure down on a table or hard surface, place the needle between the rings and pull up on the lure Place the treble in the open gap and pull the needle out. Easy peezy. The other idea I stumbled across is using google imaging on lures to get a better idea how life like of forage the lure resembles. The google app will actually show an image of a forage bait instead of an image of a man-made lure if it resembles it closely.
@ricksonora6656
@ricksonora6656 Год назад
I don’t understand half of that, but it’s great when people like you share comments that actually have value. Thank you!
@Gabe_HappyFeet_Tucker
@Gabe_HappyFeet_Tucker Год назад
@@ricksonora6656 google imaging is a tool you can use to identify objects you're not certain of simply by taking a picture of it. you download the app and afterwards there will be a camera icon on the right side of your google search bar. so if u are at a store to buy a lure to match the forage within the fishery your focused on, you could take a picture of it prior to buying it to see how closely the lure matches the forage in the fishery. because it tells me that if i take a picture of a lure to find out what lure it is specifically but instead a fish pops up, then would mean it must be dang close to perfect if google see's a real life fish instead of the lure. its a really smart tool. hope that makes sense. or if you are like randy and like to modify your baits you could experiment with colors and what not and keep taking photos until it matches what forage you are trying to match. and it ain't no thing yw

WOW, I was all about the Deep Wee-R's back in '79. I bought about 12 in the natural perch pattern of the day (I still have all of them). I do better on the rudimentary crawfish pattern instead of the "naturalized" crawfish. If you remember the Wee-R and Deep Wee-R's hooks used to get hung up together, you may want to use a shorter shank hook on either. Or, use smaller split rings to keep them apart.

Randy, I also used the Rebel Wee-R extensively in the 70’s. Mine even had a name - “Radar”. I used the crawdad color, square bill with the orange belly, not the red belly that they changed to. As you said, they quit making it. My personal best was 9 LMB on 9 casts in different directions. I had #10 on the lure, but he jumped and spit Radar back at me. Great memories. Radar retired somewhere in Dale Hollow Lake on the KY side.

One cannot claim to be a good steward of fisheries and respectful of the fish while using barbed hooks, that is just hypocritical.
