THE LYRE OF MEGIDDO, Psalm 23 in Hebrew

Seven years ago, I built a small lyre based on a 1200 BCE artifact that had been excavated in the ruins of the ancient city of Har Megiddo (aka “Armageddon”) in northern Israel. Once the instrument was completed, I posted a video of it to RU-vid and within a couple of weeks I received a request from THE MUSEUM OF MAKING MUSIC in Carlsbad, California, to allow them to have the instrument on temporary loan for a display they were planning.
I packed up the lyre, sent it to the museum, and more or less forgot about it. A few weeks ago, the lyre was returned to me by the museum. It was just like receiving a brand new instrument, and I decided to do something new with it.
The original artifact on which the lyre was based is roughly contemporary with King David, and it is safe to assume that David played a lyre (which the Old Testament calls a “kinnor” in Hebrew) that was similar to the Canaanite “lyre of Megiddo”. According to tradition, of the 150 psalms in the Old Testament BOOK OF PSALMS, 73 are said to have been written by David himself. Of these, Psalm 23 is one of the most loved.
No one has any idea what the psalms might have sounded like sung by David but we do know he was a singer and an instrumentalist. No music has survived, and the texts were not written down until several hundred years after David’s death. I can make no claims to authenticity in this rendition, since we do not even know how David tuned his lyre. For this video, I have tuned to an F minor harmonic scale, and I sang in a gentle, lyric, style, which seems appropriate for the content. All I can say for sure is that it would have been possible for David to play this on his 10-string “kinnor”.
The MUSEUM OF MAKING MUSIC has been recently renovated and for anyone interested in music who happens to be in the Carlsbad, California, area it is well worth a visit.
When I built the lyre in the video above, I put together a webpage (URL below) showing how it was created after the original artifact.

Not necessarily, the pronunciation is that of modern Hebrew, which has been severely influenced by the neighboring Indo-European languages that were spoken in the regions where Hebrew speakers resided in primarily in the Post-Biblical period. If you showed this to 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 himself he would - at best - understand only a minor portion of what is sung here, as modern Hebrew resmbles Indo-European phonology a lot more than any other Semitic language, let alone one spoken after 3 millennia less development from Proto-Semitic.

That's not entirely true though, compared to Arabic for example the difference is only in a the pronunciation of a few letters, and of those we already know some of them were losing the original pronunciation already in the classical era, like ת&ט

I sit in a balcony that watches the actual area where this was written, sang, and played. This takes me a thousand years back and makes me think; It is fascinating how we, in Israel, maintain the Hebrew language that well, practice the scriptures on a daily basis plus or minus, and yet, it is so unfortunate that our brothers and sisters abroad cannot experience, enjoy, and appreciate the scripture as it is written, in all of its glory and sophistication. I wish the Hebrew language was more popular abroad, for that reason alone. I hope for better days for this world. Love and peace from Judea and Samaria, Israel.

@@MrStuv Oh I’d love to share with you that evidence. It really is like no other and conclusive. It’s life changing when you get to know him. Isaiah 53, tells us the Jewish servant messiah has to: -Grow up and not look glorious -Be majority rejected by the Jews -he has to be persecuted by the Jews -be pierced intending to take sins -given this the Jewish people can’t work together to make this prophecy happen -can’t offer defense as he is led to slaughter -has to be killed -his days must be prolonged post death (rise) -rich man help make his grave -he must be killed along criminals (numbered with transgressors) Sound familiar? “he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭49‬:‭6‬ -must be extremely famous outside the Jews even “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭9‬:‭6‬ ‭ESV‬‬ -must be called God, current government must oppress him And Daniel tells us he has got to come before the 2nd temple fall Only Jesus meets this and he does so perfectly! He offers so much wisdom and love. I’d strongly urge you to read the New Testament, most Jewish book you’ll read! It’s actually the first place we read an account of Passover being celebrated fun fact. Here’s an online version: www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.1.ESV

The women of the Royal court in Jerusalem, and the cunning Soloman who tries to dazzle the girl with all his bling. The final part would be awesome where she sings to her shepherd boy " bind me with a seal upon your arm, with a seal upon your heart ! For loyal love is as strong as death is. It's flames are the blazings of a fire, the sacred flame of Jah ! Many waters cannot extinguish love, and if a man were to give all his riches to trade for love, then people would despise those riches "

Both aural and cantillative traditions for the Psalms survive. But as Reinhardt Flender put it (in 1994), these likely went through the cultural bottleneck of the Babylonian Exile. Even melodies which are nearly the same across the world's Jewish Diaspora and have a common root to over 2000 years ago might not reflect how the Psalms exactly sounded BEFORE the Exile esoecially in David's day. HOWEVER, the rhythm of the Psalms is evident in their syllabic structure, replete with vowel rhymes as well. Many if the psalms are metrical in terms of emphasised syllables.

@@maryparent9573 Imagine if there was a loss of culture due to a war and the American harmonies and rhythm were lost and all that was left was the writing. 2300 years from now, people reconstructing the hip hop from today may get close, but it may not sound as exactly as it would have sounded in today's culture.

The Samaritans speak a form of Hebrew from before the destruction of the first temple and were not driven out of the land of Israel.
