Spent an afternoon fly fishing Montana's Madison River in mid-July. What a fabulous river. I caught trout from the time I started fishing until the time I stopped. Literally non-stop action. I caught Cutthroat Trout, Cut-bows, Rainbows and Browns.
The Upper Madison is a large river with a ton of current. It is a Euro-nymphing fisherman's dream. Focusing on the pockets and current breaks was the key to success. I caught my fish on a size 14 Stone Pony and size 20 France Midge (both olive and black) on the dropper. When the wind really kicked up, I put on a 4mm, size 12 natural Walt's worm with an orange collar.
Rod used: Thomas & Thomas Contact ll 10ft 9in 3wt @thomasandthomasflyrods
Reel: Galvan GEN 3.5
Leader: 18mm (4x) Pezon & Michel to a 18mm (4x) Pezon & Michel sighter
Tippet: Cortland Ultra Fluoro 6x ‪@CortlandLineCompany‬

Hope you enjoy.
Tight lines!

Cory, I am astounded by your fantastic success on the upper Madison river. This river receives a ton of pressure and is known for its picky, experienced trout. Your ability to hook one fish after another is truly remarkable especially since you were fishing in the afternoon when most experts say the fishing is the toughest. Man, you are one skilled fly fisherman!! Also, I appreciate your consideration in giving us a close-up beauty shot of the trout you catch. Yours is the most entertaining, educational fly fishing Channel on RU-vid. My only complaint is that I wish you would post videos more frequently!!

Late to this one....but this is why you are world class! You are the only one who not only catches trophy class fish but while you are doing it you are sharing patterns and telling us views what you are doing and why you are doing it. You explain exactly what waters to look for and how to adjust with currents and winds. Top notch Cory.....not much else I can say. I fished the Madsion back in the 80's and caught fish but you make it look easy!

@@OldDominionTroutBum Awesome! I've always drop shotted with an indicator at the beaverhead. It's a popular technique up there. My nephew and his wife took the Euro rods and slayed it up there. They discovered that river shortly before they moved back to Alaska and they went as many times as they could. I don't see too many euro rods. The technique might be a blindside to the fish still.

I'm so glad you fished the Madison. I knew you would do well with your style of nymphing. the Madison is a great stream to step up your presentation and weight management game. You have to be able to dial in on the drift of your flies. Cory, you do a great job of explaining this weight management. I have seen some anglers frustrated at not catching fish because they did not adjust their weight to give a good presentation. My opinion, they are not taking the time to change weight. The Madison is truly a nymph fisherman's classroom. Joe Humphreys said it best ..".be flexible". Nice video Cory. When are you buying a place out there... lol

Thank you, TK! I was so happy fishing there-I couldn't keep it in! I'm glad I could bring back those memories for you. It is a privilege to fish waters like that. Just a special place. And I'll put up with an arm ache catching trout like that...you won't hear any complaints about pain! This day I didn't really walk that far. Probably a 1/4 mile downstream and fished back up picking it apart. There was one section that was braided and I fished two different channels there. The 21in brown I caught at the end was right in front of where we parked. On other days, on some other sections, we walked a good 1.5 miles and had the whole place to ourselves. In a week fishing there, even though you saw other anglers, I always felt like I had the place to myself. Thanks so much for watching, my friend. Cheers!

@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 10 месяцев назад
Appreciate it, JD. I preach line management all of the time. When you are in super fast current, sometimes you don’t have the luxury of moving it to your rod hand-that spilt second that it takes could be the difference between being connected and losing connection with your bugs. Good luck to you as well, Mate.

Your timing couldn't be better Cory! Heading out there in 2 weeks, staying right on the Yellowstone in Gardiner and fishing multiple rivers. Fingers crossed that temps cool off a bit. Question for you: - during this video, when you showed some fly changes, it looked like you tied a clinch knot, rather than a 16/20 knot (which I learned from you and really love!). Do I have that right, and if so, why did you choose something other than a 16/20? ...just curious as I may learn something from your response. Anyway, I'm hoping you're still out there enjoying everything that the area offers. Thanks as always for your excellent instructional videos!

@OldDominionTroutBum 10 месяцев назад
Good luck to you out there, David. What a special place. Being on that side of the park will put you near some great water out there. The knot I was using for my flies was a Davy knot. I always use the 16-20 for attaching my leader to fly line or if I am using heavier tippet (like 4x) when jigging streamers. I like the Davy for my flies for 3 reasons: 1) It is lightening fast to tie and doesn't use a lot of tippet. 2) It's small 3) I want my weakest point in my system to be at the fly. If something is going to break, I want it at my fly, not my leader. Even though Davy is extremely strong (all of these fish were caught on 6x) ...the 16-20 is stronger. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and enjoy Montana!

You are welcome, Jameson. Glad you are having success! I do think the Galvan is worth the price. A lot of thought went into it for euro nymphers, especially those who use thin leaders. Redington has the Tilt and Orvis has their Hydros ll Euro reel. Both are around $280. Hanak has the Superb XP for $220ish. Greys make the Tail Fly reel for around $180. Hey Jon. That is a beautiful area you are going to. I fished the Gallatin while I was there for a few days. It's a beautiful river (all of them are actually) and it's full of 10-13 inch rainbows. The Madison is probably less than an hour and a half away from Big Sky and I would definitely go there. The Park has a lot of streams everywhere. But overall, I fell in love with the Madison. If I only had one stream to fish in that area-that is the one. You can go to a different area of the river every day and it's like a new river. Just make sure you check about the runoff. If it is rolling-you can go into the Park and have some great fishing. The Gibbon, The Firehole, Slough Creek, etc...Go to a fly shop and ask for intel-they will help you. Glad the channel has been helpful. Good luck to you. MT is a special place!

Great video, Cory, as always. I'm looking at the Galvan Euro reel myself. Did you go for the 3.5 or 3.7 size? Does one of those two balance your T&T 10'9 better than the other? Also, do you had any experience with the Diamondback’s Ideal Nymph? If so, what are your thoughts compared to the Galvan? The cheaper option I'm considering is the Orvis Hydros II Euro, but the Galvan is really tempting me if I can get the right size figured out.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 9 месяцев назад
Hey Austin. I have the 3.5 and it is perfect on my 10’9” 3wt (and 2wt). I really don’t see the need for the larger one. The thought process behind this reel is perfect-they understood how to make it for thin leaders. Full cage, rounded edges, recessed drag knob, and a flush handle. Nothing that your leader will get caught on. I don’t have experience with the Diamondback but I see the same thought process was used. Orvis has always made great reels and I have a couple of Hydros myself. The only thing I personally don’t like is it’s weight. I feel it’s a little too heavy for a T&T. They only need to between 4.3-4.9 oz. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching!

I’ve noticed in your videos sometimes you run the leader over your rod hand trigger finger and sometimes you don’t. Personally, I always run it over my trigger finger but it does add an extra step to the end of my cast. Can you explain the reason that sometimes you do this and other times you don’t? Eric, the West is an incredible place. Just the beauty alone is amazing. Trust me, I'm tying to figure out how to live out there.... I do prefer to have my line over my middle finger that's on my handle most of the time. I really try to make that transition while it's in the air before it enters the water. However, when I don't...it's usually on short drifts OR when I'm in fast current or quick pocket water, where even a millisecond pause can cause you to lose contact with your bugs. If you lose contact, you have to play catch up and you'll miss part of the drift. Hope this helps and start planning that trip out West!

Mike, the current was rolling through there. Really typical for those western rivers, especially just after runoff. Wading wasn't bad if you didn't go above your mid thigh or so. Cory..I've got a question for you on tight-line nymphing in the more turbulent water out west, where I live, vs. in the East. You have talked much about seeing the take before you feel it. Does that change in this type of water that you were fishing in this video? I was wondering with all of the hydraulics on your sighter, were you feeling more takes than seeing them? If not, please let us know what you look for when you are seeing the take. I would think that would be difficult in this water. A reply would be much appreciated. I've learned a bunch on this subject from watching your channel.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 10 месяцев назад
Rick, I am seeing most of my strikes. There were a few times when I had a 4mm bead on that I felt some (it was more of a see/feel at the same time)-that's because the connection gets really tight because of the weight. Even though the currents are super strong, you should still be getting that nice bow in your sighter so you can see any movement or hesitation. And that's key...having the bow so your are getting as close to a perfect drift as possible. The hardest thing to do in fast water/strong currents is getting connected right away. If you don't, you play catch up to your sighter. Just focus on making a nice, smooth transition from the cast to managing your line without hesitation. If you do this, you will be ahead of your sighter, have a nice bow and pick up those strikes. You are looking for slight hesitations, twitches, etc. In the faster water-it is mostly hesitations. I when I say hesitation-It could be a millisecond pause. Hope this helps and tight lines to you.

Hi Corey. I was up at penns over the weekend. 2 quick questions. Do u ever add a split shot between you tag and anchor fly to get a little more weight. If not how big of a bead do you use on the anchor fly. I almost feel the the bottom (anchor fly) acts more like split shot than it does as a fly they hit. I always feel they hit the tag fly? Am I doing something wrong. I use a Walt’s and stone poney as my anchor fly. Are there other patterns u like for the bottom (heavier fly, anchor fly). I am struggling a little.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 7 месяцев назад
Hey David, I did a video and talk about "anchor" flies. I really don't like that term because it makes it sound like they need to be super heavy/sacrificial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yLN0LxnqnN4.htmlsi=vJ2Tw5-SxYD7hOLq I never add split shot. The bottom fly should be fished just like the dropper. There are tons of times I'm only using one fly (I do it often and would suggest you try just one). There are a lot of factors that go into what weight to use: current, wind, etc. Under normal conditions on Penns, you should be able to fish a single 2.8 bead and cover a ton of water. Every now and then you'll have to go to a 3.3. You are just having a tough time getting your bugs down. Learn that tuck cast, shorten up your tippet length (maybe 4 feet or so) and thin your leader out. All of this will help you have a better "feel" for the bottom. But no ticking.... This video may help as well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oPmcAZZmf-0.htmlsi=cU8pSeZX2dFR9cKe

Thanks for all of your great videos - fishing and fly tying. I noticed that you mentioned you were using a Pezon & Michel leader and tippet system while on the Madison. Can you tell me more about this product and how you rig up your Euro nymphing leader? Thank you. Keep up the great work!

You are welcome, Phillip. Pezon is out of France. It is specifically engineered for Euro Nymphing. It's one of the best lines I have used. You can see my setup here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_LsHADwel28.html Thanks for watching and tight lines to you!

@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks Cory! I use a Cortland Euro Nyphming line (.22 mm) straight line, a micro loop at the end tie to a 25 ft. mono leader starting at 15 lb. Maxima down to a 4 lb. sighter to a 2 mm split ring. From there I’ll run 5-6 ft. of 6X and add a dropper about 18” from the point fly. This set up has worked well for me this summer but I’ll look into Pezon as well. Thanks for sharing!

@@philipnaro3040 Phillip, I think you will find the thinner you go, the better it will be for you. Give it a try. Good luck to you!

Hi Cory - I wanted to let you know that I fished with the Pezon & Michel line you recommended and your leader formula on the Madison this past Saturday. I must say the line is very nice without any memory. Plus it’s a lot more sensitive than home made Maxima tapered leaders. However, what I noticed is that the line tended to wrap around the first or second guide of my rod which can be disastrous if a fish hits and snaps off the delicate tip of my rod. Have you ever noticed this type of wrap up before? Thanks for the tip for this material, I really like it!

@@philipnaro3040 Glad you like it, Philip. Wrapping issues happen when you tend to rush your cast. Just slow it down and wait for it to fully extend behind you before you start your forward cast.

Cory, with a 3.5 bead do you use a jig style hook so the bead doesn’t slide down over the eye? I want to tie some 3.5s to have out there in August because it is and can be very windy. Thanks!

Ethan, I tie them with jig hooks and traditional hooks as well. You can still offset the straight hook with slotted beads. It won't slide down the eye. Good luck in August!
