The Magic of Layering in Soft Pastel - Vibrant Poppy Painting Tutorial
I'm glad you've joined me for this lesson where I hope many of you will learn about the magic of layering in soft pastel!
In this lesson, I teach you the concept of painting using layers much like planting a garden, and trying to envision your layers developing from the roots up.
Some things to keep in mind with layering:
1. Your surface will determine the amount of layering you get... about 4-5 with unsanded surfaces, and 5-9 with sanded pastel papers.
2. The more layers you add the more there is a chance to muddy your colors, so don't overdo it.
3. Dark to light- we typically lay down darker values first gradually getting lighter as we layer. This depends on subject matter.
4. Final Marks - your final spice marks or focal point marks need to be considered and pre-planned. Therefore, don't "over-layer" where you may want to place a focal point flower or other element.
Products Used in This Lesson: (note: better prices may be available at other retailers)
Canson XL Sand Grain Paper: amzn.to/3EwCvYK
Derwent Inktense Blocks (available in multiple quantities) / I used two colors for the underpainting, but you could use watercolor for this or even pastel : amzn.to/3i7EnQb
Pastelmat (white): amzn.to/3EXY5XG
This painting is available as a print (as well as other products) here: fineartamerica...

Susan, I am now waiting here in Texas for true Springtime and all the glorious flowers to bloom. This tutorial is exactly what I was sesrching for today. The underpainting the flowers techniques. I especially like how you go back and finish filling out the greens to the field (if that makes sense). Love and admire your work and dedication to teaching us all . Sorry for the long text! Thank you!

Lovely, just lovely. I enjoyed it very much!! Hubby bought me a set of 30 Rembrandt soft pastels. They're pretty. I had no idea what to do with them! I do all kinds of other art, so he thought, why not ... she'll figure it out!!?!! Now I can't wait to try them. He also got me a set of 36 SCHMINCKE watercolors, so I can do the under painting too. Thank you!!

I just received my Paris collection. I ordered it after you gave us a heads up on the sale. I just added some highlights to a painting that was dull and disappointing. Wow! What a massive difference! It was like I turned the lights on!💡 I was on the edge of giving up pastels, now I realize it was the quality of my pastels, not my technique. What a beautiful realization. Thank you so much!!🥰🫂

I have been following you for a short while and you have become my favorite pastel artist here! I have learned so much from you!!! 🤩 I wanted to ask a special favor if is something you would consider doing. Could you make a video of how to set up a portrait palette? A limited palette just for portraits, like must have colors. I know many brands have some premade Portrait sets, but looking at them, one can see, much variation.... Soooo, if you were gonna create a limited portrait palette, which colors would you include? If this is something you could do, I will be forever grateful! 🥰 Ps. I know you do landscapes, but you are so knowledgeable, I trust you would have the answer!
@monetcafe
@monetcafe Год назад
That's a great suggestion, Vey. I happen to love painting portraits but don't make many lessons since they don't get the views and activity of landscape art. I'll have to put your request on the "to do" list. Thanks... great idea.

How would you compare canson me tientes to the canson sanded grain paper for pastels and oil pastels? Which would you prefer and which would hold more layers? Tfs
@monetcafe
@monetcafe Год назад
That’s a really great question. I think I prefer the Canson Mi Tientes to the sand grain paper. The Canton XL paper doesn’t feel quite as substantial and I prefer it for studies. I also like how the Canson MiTientes paper has two different textures on each side. One is smoother, and one has more of a pattern.

How do you keep the pastel from falling iff your picture.
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 23 дня назад
Hi @elisabethseeger5837, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image. To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4XD4SezFyBg.html&t=209s

Anatomically..? Very descriptive. Sure got my attention. This piece should be viewed in a dining, or sitting room; along with soft light; with candles flickering while sipping on a red wine. 💜 Secrets of Communicating Through Words and how to apply them. I believe the Arts, (painting, sound, writing and then (teaching,)) there is a commandment, to be knowledgeable in the art you are teaching. To be "Vain" in our communication is against what our Lord set in place to build our character as believers. 1 Timothy 1:6 teaches us about "Vain Jangling" when we communicate to others… To do otherwise; puts us in Jeopardy for inflicting confusion. If it were not for descriptive adjectives, most writers would not be able to write. There are restrictive adjectives, (limited) as well as descriptive. As an example… Many years ago, I served as a litigator for the United mine workers. During arbitration, my questioning must be precise. My leading questions were like this, "were YOU there, and what did you see, YES, OR NO..?" This is very limited, Why..? If the person was there, then and only then will I permit this individual to be descriptive. If this person was not there, he doesn't get the opportunity to write a novel, which may influence confusion. True knowledge is very important. The word "VAIN" can be replaced with many other words. This means, as an adjective, it's very descriptive. I could sit for hours and write; letting my imagination run wild as long as I keep it on the line of what is true. (Non-bias) "Jangling," is a plural noun or pronoun. Here, it describes a word salad, saying a lot, but meaning nothing. When we use Art, music, writing… we must take into consideration as true believers, the truthfulness about what we communicate. It may change the world. J.L.Price
