Thanks, Paul. Many “musicians” don’t appreciate the richness of the slash chords and rely upon the base player to direct the chord progression. Realizing the beauty the slash chord is an “a-ha” moment for many guitarists. The challenge is to subvert the tendency for laziness.

What helped me a lot was learning a bunch of triad patterns (I mean, just playing three notes) - not just the patterns, but the which is the first, third, fifth etc. That "aha" moment when you can visualize exactly which notes chords have in common or which are just a semitone away etc will change your playing. chords, inversions and also open voices , voice leading etc. Sound like scary music theory, but its isn't really.
@mark7592
@mark7592 3 года назад
I'm starting to get more and more into triads and inversions. Now it almost feels like strumming those basic chord patterns sounds so dull. I think Paul might have a video about it. I think most rock/pop songs actually use mostly triads and some added notes, doubled notes are just unnecessary. It opens so much more stuff about playing. And like you said, it's not that hard.
@reneeschke

Any examples for these triad patterns?

Paul- I'm a self-taught 62 year old guitar player. I'm embarrassed that I never asked anyone how to play slash chords when I saw them on music. I would just ignore the slash and play them as the standard chord. Thank you for showing me what they are and how they can be notated. It makes so much sense! Of course, now I will need to relearn a bunch of songs where I just ignored the slash "denominator".

Sir Paul Davids. Just wanna thank you for your passion in playing guitar. It makes the likes of me (an amateur) be inspired in improving my play. Btw, i really love your funk and blues playing. Keep it up. Let your passion resonate to more guitar players out there. ❤️❤️❤️

Great topic since its so true that those alternate bass notes make the entire chord sound different than typical major, minor, or sus. As a guitarist playing for book trailers who looks for inspiration, your modeling here is great since you get such a melodic sound while clearly explaining how to use those slash chords to get more unique sound. Cheers!

AKA Inversions. Also, my brother (who learnt guitar by himself) thought the slash meant you could play EITHER the G chord or the B chord. He may still think this, and he thinks I'm wrong when I explained this to him. I'm gonna show him this video now.

Perfect video at the perfect time. Thanks so much Mr. David’s! You consistently illustrate to the masses creative ways to enjoy the instrument and sneaky sneak more basic theory into our playing. Also it was nice to see the 335 come out, it’s creamy rich tones really leant themselves to these progressions! Makes me wish you were still teaching. And lived in Canada. And lived in my tiny part of it. For now I’ll settle for practicing these progressions. But first, coffee.

For this reason I also want to say that I entered the video because I understood that it was about the chords used by the guitarist slash !! But it doesn't matter, the video has been totally enlightening, interesting, well explained and I'm going to put it into practice right now !! Thank you very much!!
