The Magic of the Unlikely 

There is magic in resilience and the possibilities of the unlikely. In those cases where we can see something happening “against all odds,” I am drawn to understand how aspects such as strength, adaptability, hope, and resilience overcome discrimination, poverty, lack of resources, isolation. In this talk, I want to feature my research, a phenomenon that I call “The magic of the unlikely” or, in other words, the case of a successful entrepreneurship endeavor (AKA Business) for Latina entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship has been one strategy for historically marginalized populations to enter the economy and overcome barriers in the workplace such as gender and racial discrimination. In this talk, I want to offer a counter perspective to what I call “the pobrecito mentality” and offer a perspective that elevates the wealth that is embedded in the community cultural wealth of Latinas.
