l felt like she was more disappointed by just wanting to profit from it in a monetary way... like, if the woman was profiting from it by being able to blackmail important people or by getting more power Mary would be fine by it, but just doing it for some bits of cash is so dull-witted to her,, thats why she said the woman didnt 'deserve' the book
It shows a lack of appreciation. Even if you think it's horrifying and disgusting, you'd still think too much of the power to just use it to make money. You really would need some kind of apathy to place money above that power.
The vibe I'm getting from them is kind of like they used to be friends or have been through things together and have some sort of "friendship" with a lot of rivalry and arguments
@@lilaboxx i think it’s like they used to be friends but then they went through something traumatic and never really talked again and kinda hated seeing eachother cause it reminded them of it
Tbh, as a cook I've been burnt enough and been around enough burns, (including some pretty bad ones) that the intended spookiness of that line went over my head until I read your comment. Lol.
Oh boi oh yes this was one of my absolute favourites. Specially the "using it to make money!? It sickened me. It still does." Keep up the beautiful job dear team!
I Honestly had the same thoughts as her when she said "she started asking about his will ect ect." I was like YOU COULD BE JESUS 2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO AND YOURE HERE BEING A RESSURECTION SCAM ARTIST
I love this phrase because she was like 9??? And has never killed anyone??? Wow, that was impressive of her. Have never heard of such a person, really, adorable kid
I wasn't expecting to love Mary Keay, but here I am. I think her voice is my favorite so far. Also, her saying she prefers to "diversify her portfolio," I feel like it sort of backs up my theory that the Magnus Institute is associated with one specific entity (probably the giant eye one) and Mary decided she'd rather dip her toes into all of them. The creaking floorboards!!! Those have been bothering me in the background of all Gertrude's tapes because I thought they were doors being opened! But early hints at a secret storage area? This podcast is so satisfying gosh dang.
So there's a flesh book, a tiny animal bone book, a bone fuckery book, a book that smells of ozone and gives you vertigo (which has been burned), and a book that burns/boils people. Mary has the flesh and tiny animal bone book. Gerard used it on her???? Jared has the bone fuckery book (The Boneturner's Tale). Ex Altiora, the ozone-vertigo book, was burned by Gerard. The burning/boiling book is in the possession of the police force because they got it from Jose after he burned a house. That or Jose got it back or something. Gotcha.
oh GOD there are so many lines that Mary says that are just so... indicative of her personality. she's... certainly interesting, and oh boy her dynamic with Gertrude. also who's Eric??
well if Mary was that creepy and seemingly... neutral evil, I suppose Gerard is chaotic good or something XD he definitely seemed to help ppl before in strange situations
first time listener, and i can already see that these two at least were friends. Your comment makes me doubt they could have been just that now though x)
the-magnus-archives.fandom.com/wiki/Characters/Episode - This keeps track of the characters by episode. There are also links to the individual episodes in the character list. You can also go to the character's pages, but those are more likely to contain spoilers as they deal with the characters as a whole.
The more I read the comments the more I realized that everyone is shipped with everyone in this podcast lol it’s not unusual or anything it’s just not what I expected from the audience of a horror story
I've noticed the number of likes has dropped significantly from the first season and I can only assume everyone who hasn't liked these episodes are too involved in the story to give it a thought. Note to self: go back and like the ones I've missed
I've been trying to like the episodes, but I usually binge a good 20 episodes in one sitting while I'm drawing or whatnot and I forget to like each video as they pass :p
Relistening to it makes me wonder just /how much/ I... do not remember my initial reactions to all this; I must have devoured all the episodes too fast. BUT GOD MARY IS SO INTRIGUING; AND THE MENTION OF ERIC! I find it quite fascinating that Gertrude goes "I should tell Elias"; is this a ploy for Mary, or does she genuinely worked with Elias with far more ease than Jon? I hope we get to hear more about their relationship in any case!
@@JA-iu3eq my theory is that It's Free Immortality but idk how well it holds up. whatever the case i feel like she had it done intentionally, since like you said, she didnt seem all that upset and her son was Presumably in possession of her book (n i feel like if someone else had turned her skin into a book, they wouldve taken the book themselves instead of giving it back to gerard) but thats just a theory. a g-
Feel the same way, she knew she was running out of time so made her son perform the ritual on her, that's why she changed from before and why it sounds like he resents her when he burns that book, also is why he was acquired because her body disappeared
This episode has made me certain that she intentionally chose to die this way. Towards the end of the statement she says "After a lifetime, I know all [the book's] secrets, save one. And I have a pretty good idea about how to find that." Only question is whether or not her son was involved in the death
Not only was the recording full of more info about how you actually use a leitner but now John has the laptop too? What a juicy episode. My only regret is that I have to put it down for a bit.
i am wtf??? like, i knew that Marry Key was a real person in univarce for a while because of the statments but like, there is a diffrence between hearing about her from John reading the statments and actually hearing a statment from her??? oh my god i am so excited. also she and Gertrude knew each oher???? holy shit this is so cool already
Jon: Mary me Gertrude didn’t like each other Also Jon: Martin showing compassion, caring for me and bringing me tea and lunch? Suspicious he must be working for someone
I'm both living for Mary shading the institute because I've got the feeling that there is something going on that they're not telling the people who work at the archives bit I'm also very scared of her and think she's not on the right side either. Gertrude is iconic.
Am i the only one who loves Mary? I mean, yeah sure, she seemed off but other than that she seemed pretty chill and kudos to her for learning Sanskrit i searched it up and it seemed complicated as hell edit: I hate Mary now
I really enjoy the dynamic of Gertrude and Mary. From the vibes I get in this episode, I’d say they embody that friendship trope in fiction between two characters who are extremely knowledgeable on a certain topic, tolerate each other, but aren’t _exactly_ on the same side (yes, Mary said they were, but I’m not sure of how true it was… perhaps in an “enemy of my enemy” way, but no more than that, *I think* ). I almost ship them, but I think I prefer them being friends.
@@kehlcassidy9562 it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to this episode and I don’t remember their dynamic well, but from what I DO remember: totally! I’ll have to relisten with that in mind, but I think I’ll agree with you.
Is it me, or do Jon's direct statement givers tend to be more focused. It could just be old age, but I wonder... Maybe he really is a better Archivist than Gertrude.
My theory from this episode and what we know so far: Okay, lots of info in this episode. More things that affirm my theory of the institute being working for the open eye entity. Mary's family have been protected by it since her ancestor started working for it as we learn in that 1816 letter to magnus. She hints at least a couple of times that she's not only working for the open eye (the most obvious one is when she said about "a singular devotion being too restrictive"). But we also learn that the open eye entity is also a sinister one, when she says that she likes watching people dying but not being the one to do it. I believe we also get more info about the people who work for the open eye (whether they know it or not is a different thing), how some of them are on the "offensive", getting out and doing work for it (like the researchers and also gerard), and some of them are just staying behind and gathering the info (like the archivists). Now, I had to google it 'cause what mary said about the last secret of the book and saying gertrude to "wish her luck" intrigued me, and it turns out that mary died in the same year of this statement, according to one of season 1's episodes (the first time we hear about her and gerard). So, my theory is that that last secret of the book she is reffering to is probably the one she did or tried to do and led to her death. She did the same thing she was doing to the book's victims, with the skin and all, and the victims seem like they're forever trapped in that book. So, I'm guessing the last secret of the book had something to do with making her like the others, forever linked with that book, but unlike the others she wouldn't be trapped in it. So, I'm guessing something like "as far as the book exists I can exist and the only way to kill me is to destroy the book alltogether". Since she appears after her death, I believe she succeeded or at least partially succeeded (maybe her face being full of the words is one of the side effects that would make her spell/ritual a partially successful one). Gertrude knew and Elias know alot more about their situation that we thought until now, so it's interesting to see if the other people who work in the institute know what they're working for or not, or even if they're actual humans at all or if they once were humans but not anymore. As for the "end", what is it? Is it one of the entities, or is it the place from where the entities originate from? Her saying that she doesn't find death interesting reminds me of that episode about the death entity, so is "the end" also "death"? Also, her talking about that Eric and how gertrude "should ask what's left of him" makes me thing that the page she gave to getrude is this eric she's reffering to and is someone they both know.
Bro i shouldn't even be watching these with my predisposition to paranoia and ptsd surrounding the paranormal but like i can't stop even though i am literally on edge 24/7 :'( I really love the story and wanna get to the bottom of all this mystery! Anyone Else?
You know what intrigues me? Mary's voice. Its so calm and gives friendly old woman that gives you cookies and listens to your complaints about the world and she just sounds so nice. But the words she says. They terrify me so much. And the complete lack of mentioning Jared. Where is he? What's he doing at the time of this recording? And why is Martin not in this episode?? Martin is baby, he is Angel, he is god, I would I would cheat on a game with Death for Martin. We need more Martin. Hang the plot, give us more Martin!

Does she? I found her voice unsettling. It put me on alert as soon as she started talking.
@ oh I knowwwww that's why I love her voice so much! It's like it ought to sound like nice old lady vibes but it's not. She sounds dangerous from her first line and you can't tell why 🤩
I had started to watch this series a few days ago and now I'm fully engrossed in the story behind it! I am wholeheartedly excited to see where the tale goes from here and I just can't seem to stop watching! The voice actors are spectacular in their performances and the sense of dread, of fear from the build up is astronomically delicious story! :D
Mary / Gerald had the drawing of an eye and eye tattoos where as gerdrude went and cut out all the eyes from book covers. Pretty sure they are opposing sides
Im working while relistening, cheking Income Taxes, there are many boxes and lots of work. I didnt know we had a client named Jurgen until I was at the Js, Mr Jurgens file in hand. Fuck. (It's not a common name here)
Me: *hears a creak * Also me: Oh God someone's opened a door and is gonna kill Gertrude or smth oh frick what if its Elias it would be wouldnt it oh frick on no its- Jon: Its a floorboard. Me: ..... Oh. Jon: Also I found this key- Me: *crawling into my grave * mhm :')
Tma fans every time an object appears: OMG!!! A syringe!! >:'00 I'm SURE it's the same one that was showed in episode [exact number] and that this all is just an evil scheme! (And by "Tma fans", I mean myself)
I'm interested whether it's a coincidence or not but it sounds like Mary was an inspiration for Jonny's performacne as Voice of the Cold in Slay the Princess. her line "I'd never killed before" and Cold's "We never burned before" are delivered in almost identical way
"Elias might not have killed her, but there is a lot he's not telling me. I'm afraid to ask, though" Yeah good call. I mean, can you imagine that conversation? Jon: "Hey there everyone, glad you've forgiven me" The others: "Sure have. You're not still paranoid though, are you?" Jon: "What? No, no, no!" The others: "..." Jon: "..." Jon: "So that Elias guy"
For some reason the first time I listened to this I thought the doctor had literally moved into a house and was running a practice from there and was somewhat confused. I’m rather surprised to learn that was not the case
Okay, I could be crazy but does anyone else get at least vague Eurus vibes from Mary? Eurus from the BBC Sherlock series. Something about Mary just feels similar to me
I believe this is the first time that one of the "powers" at work behind the scenes was directly named. Mary is affiliated with Death/"The End" - other episodes connected to this are Pageturner, the Cheating Death episode, the Piper episode (?), and probably a few others that I have forgotten about. I really liked the voice acting here, great grandma face-off.
The first reason I hardly read the comments: spoilers. The second reason I don’t read the comments: shipping. I mean, I don’t mind _some_ shipping, I understand that people have fun with it and that’s totally fine... but the sheer _amount_ of it in this fandom is seriously insane. I swear every other comment is like “OMG, tHoSe TwO cHaRaCtErS aCtUaLLy _SpOkE_ tO eAcH oThEr! tHeY mIgHt HaVe EvEn MaDe EyE cOnTaCt! sO mUcH sExUaL tEnSiOn!” Like.... whaaaaa?AM I LITERALLY THE ONLY ONE WHO JUST LISTENS TO THESE FOR _THE ACTUAL STORY_ INSTEAD OF OBSESSING OVER THE CHARACTERS’ LOVE LIVES EVERY 2 SECONDS? Can’t an ace fan catch a break, especially in one of the few fandoms that boasts a canonically asexual main character?? 🤦🏻🥺
I'm ace, and only seen crazy shipping in this episode. I only like Jon/Martin. But ye, here for the story. It's fascinating. I get your confusion with sexual tension, though 😅
That’s a thing with most fandoms, but I’ve noticed that I see it far more in properties that have the least to do with romance. My theory is that the fandom for a work creates mostly what it doesn’t get from the work itself. That’s why fandoms for happy children’s media are often so dark, but gritty stories often have fandoms more interested in the lighthearted aspects. It’s not that they don’t c a r e about the story, but they’re creating more of what the source material doesn’t already provide. I t h i n k most of the Gertrude x Mary people are joking, though.
Mary mentions Grove Rd and the Royal London Hospital. My brother lived there and studied medicine at that hospital. I would visit often. It has the scariest medical museum you can imagine. I think it is closed to the public. Thank God. That place is haunted.
This was certainly a fascinating episode. I'm glad John is uncovering the secrets.... That Mary Keay tho.. She's as Pleasantly Unpleasant as the being Michael. Im really enjoying this podcast 💙
I was using the word legend more as a pop culture way, cause it's actually very anchor in pop culture. It's use in many game, many books and many podcast, whish is kinda like a legends ! It's iconic, just as Cthulhu is ! I know that lovecraft was an awful person but all of this creation did impact a lot of the things we play with
