A few things you may like to know about your main closing loop.
The reasons it's the way it is.
How many jumps can you make with one loop,
do you give it a name, because it's been in the family so long?
How much respect does it deserve?

Wow! As you said I did not expect all this amazing information from a video on a simple closing loop. Obviously a wealth of experience that I'm grateful for you sharing . The detailed explanations and demonstrations of wearing, failure and malfunction modes actually changed how I look at a few things wrt design, vulnerabilities, what to look for and how to think about some things.... and I'm a rigger! Super informative!! I'll definitely watch your other videos. Thanks!

I just did my manicure with a grommet! hahaha. Again, great video!! I just love the high level of detail you put on each and every part of your work. By the way, your "malfunctioned parts" collection is amazing!

Thanks Daniel, The collection of "Malfunctioned parts" or as I refer to them as "Exhibit: A", was not accumulated in one week and what you've seen is the very tip of the iceberg. More to follow.

Thanks for the very informative video. At the beginning of the video i thought 'how can you make a 30 min video about closing loops?'. It appears there is a lot i didn't know!

My pleasure, Sybren. Thank you for your kind words. I am grateful that you watched another one, as you can clearly see, I'm new at this youtube thing. Someone said "you should start before you're ready" so I have. Under 28 minutes, if you could see my editing room floor, I saved you from an additional 60 minutes : ) No walk down history / memory lane about Cons&Pins or shock cord with a needle folded bridles. Good to know someone is getting some benefit, from my efforts, it really makes my day. All the best, Colin.

Also loop can be damaged on washer. So, folks make sure washer has nice and rounded edges (inside and outside circle),...
@thomson1963
@thomson1963 4 года назад
Hello again Jerolim and thank you for your time. You are absolutely correct, making sure the washer hole is de-burred, to give the loop a better home. My apologies, in a feeble attempt to keep the video under sixty minutes, that pearl of wisdom ended up on my editing room floor and the burry grommets got the slot. (didn't even mention the sharp edge on the inside, created with bad/over user grommet setting tools) Please forgive me for my omissions, once again you are correct to flag it, thanks. All the best, Colin.

I'm happy you made the time to watch, another one , adracadabear. Sorry for the lack of Icons, so far, Not so much traffic going through my workshop at the moment, so using what I have to hand, the only Icon in my storeroom was last jumped at "The Burning Man" and frankly I'm in no hurry to get all that Nevada dust on my work area. Icon loop attachment point is well evolved (thanks to PdeFr engineers), they have significantly reduced the snag-ability of that zone. However, as with all rigs, You still need to pack properly. All the best, Colin.

Another great video! Can't get enough. :) I never thought about the loop attachment point being a possible snag hazard. Thank you Colin! Two questions: We use Type II A Sleeving White for main closing loops. Is the loop on our 3-ring systems also made of Type II A? And another question about lines and attachment points: Your choice would be Vectran 700lb. That line would break if it got loaded with 700 pounds. How much load can be added to an attachment point (Type 3 tape)? Ps. Dave Allen is hilarious!
@thomson1963
@thomson1963 3 года назад
Hello again Marcel Geser, Thank you for your kind words and questions. The Type II A, I use to make main loops is the same material used on (most) 3Ring risers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9ruUZaTn_4M.html You would be good with 250lb line in the perfect world, (soft openings, etc) but apart from them cutting the attachment tapes enthusiastically, you will not get too many jumps out of you LineSet. I am attracter to the 700lb Vectran because of the relatively low pack volume, if you worry about the aerodynamic drag, retract your landing gear, to compensate (your legs have a relatively large surface area). After 700 to 800 flights the 700lb line is no longer actualy good for working at 700lb but still hanging in there. Abrasion damage will get them in the end, don't take them that far. There is no Best Before Date or Jump number, so many variables, I've see some LineSets only go less than half expected life, due to poor packing and asymmetric deployment positions. The Ty3 3/4"attachment tapes can handle most loads you may put on them in general use, I look forward to see THE BEAST at AREA 47 RIGGING run some demonstrations in the future with attachment tapes. My destructive test experiment are all made comparing one against the other, see who wins, No beautiful LoadCell to record the forces like used on The Beast, so sorry I have no numbers for you on that part (for now) On my main I'd prefer the tapes separated, before my head did, pack like this, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bjz4JuwvxrQ.html and it won't be an issue for you, unless you hit something or someone in flight, point loading in a collision will tend to take an attachment tape passed its happy place, do your best to avoid this. Wish you Happy Landings.

Colin, at the end of the 2018 season I asked you what course you would advise for rigging and told me aboud Dave Dewolf's (rip). So I did it. And 2019 has been a great year of experiences, and would have never happened without that piece of advice. thank you!

Colin, I've recently been closing student zerox's some of which have attachment points on the bottom flap, others on the bottom of the main tray. The closing loops on the bottom flap need to be very short, however I'm finding that the finger trapped loops after as little as one jump are getting bigger, but the overall loop isn't getting longer, and I'm confused as to what's happening. I'm sure that it's happening during the closing of the container, but I don't know how it's happening. Risk of the loop being bigger seems to be largely mitigated with the loop being away from things it could snag on. P.s. The thread you put onto my Cookie G4 strap is holding up well, haven't had an issue since.
@maxiking8496
@maxiking8496 Год назад
It's there actually a way of increasing the pack volume instead of manipulating the loop? On my vector, the loop is built onto the first flap and I can't shorten it any more, although the main canopy is within limits. I'm thinking of sewing some padding to the deployment bag. My sewing skills would definitely let me do a clean job on this. What would be your opinion on this? Could that be airworthy?
@thomson1963
@thomson1963 Год назад
The way I have done this is copying a technique from Parachutes de France. Fitting a false floor or spacer to the pack tray, Basically, a few sheets of camping mattress of the appropriate size placed within a Cordura pillowcase type arrangement. Carefully hand stitched to the main tray in several places(corners and midpoints) Parachute be France used to use Press-Studs to secure the spacer, on their equipment, intended for Clubs Student training, making them more versatile with larger range of canopy choices.

@@thomson1963 thank you so much for taking your time to even answer such native questions :) I really appreciate that :) Do you see any downside in sewing this 'pillow' to the deployment bag instead of sewing it into the container?
@thomson1963
@thomson1963 Год назад
As the mighty Frank Zappa said(+-) The mind is like a parachute, it’s most useful to you, when it’s open. So hey, go for it, if you are convinced it’s better than putting a spacer in the main tray. I have seen people throwing a small stack of newspapers into the bottom of the tray. They say there are, many ways to skin a cat.

is this why they have students on throwaway instead of lolon cable ripcords these days.maybe also got bored of losing those handles...students who buck their AFF instructors and go unstable can get in trouble though

Yes, the newest triangular (The Parachutes De France influence) is my favourite, so far. But you still need to Pack Properly ! Who is safer ? the newest 2020 Volvo compared to my old banger 1998 Seat, Obviously the New Volvo is a superior vehicle ! But if we drive off a mountain top, side by side, well the result will be quite similar. Know your gear and operate it appropriately for the environment you're in. I'd like to see you ready for the next load, ready for a load of fun, and home in time to see your loved ones. All the best, Colin.

Really enjoy your videos!! Very educational and easy to understand! Could you please share some advice on how you would go about lightly cleaning a skydiving container? Like the oks n not oks of chemicals on cordura. I am afraid to use any chemicals on my Triton black container 1000D Cordura. Thanks!!

thank you JP Bresca for watching, glade you enjoy the videos. The best is in the bathtub, (Rig completely disassembled) But for just a spot cleaning in one or two wee areas, you will need, (patience and elbow grease) Two cups(0.5 liters) of warm water, (one is for cleaning off brush, after lifting dirt from fabric) some very diluted Fairy dish soup in an atomiser spray bottle, Microfiber cloths, towels (paper and cotton) A 25 or 30mm paint brush, with bristles cut down to 10mm (similar to a toothbrush length) A shoe brush First when dry, use a scrub brush (shoe brush) to get the bigger parts off. Place the towels around the area, dip the short bristled brush in water, in a rotation pattern gently pass over the area, rinse and repeat, dab area with MicroFiber, if necessary a wee squirt of the (very dilute) Fairy, more small circular rotations with warm water in the brush,(repeat) dab and wipe with towel. allow to dry, a fan will help speed up drying. I hope this helps.

@@thomson1963 Really appreciate the detailed answer. It is incredibly helpful. I have searched for this topic on many forums but the difference between that and your advice is, I trust your opinion very much when it comes to equipment. It's clear that your heart is in this for all the right reasons and I get the same release when teaching skateboarding. Seeing people learn safely is such a reward because it saves them from some of the pain we had to go through to learn. haha :) Thanks for your help, looking forward to more of your videos. They are borderline relaxing haha sometimes i watch them to unwind and learn.
