The fact that you bother to rehome the small slugs, catterpillars and such who damage your plants, instead of just killing them little souls, shows a kind heart. No wonder your succulents grow so beautifully, bless your kind soul!💚

Thank you for caring too💚 My heart breaks for the poor little creatures and the state of our natural world. So many are going extinct 🥺 They will always be welcome in my garden 💚

I really love enjoying your videos. I'm new to growing succulents. There's a lot of videos out there. You're the best for information and honesty. Please don't stop. Have a question? Thinking about a garden. How do I prepare the ground?
@SucculentGrowingTips
@SucculentGrowingTips Год назад
Thank you so much- i really appreciate you saying that 💚 Re preparing the ground- from my experience the best you can do is to get a spade or pick axe and go over the area a bit. This will break the soil apart which in turn will help succulents establish better as many have very thin roots that have a hard time to grow through hard soil. Also mix in a bit of potting mix. Any will do, just not straight up manure. I'm actually going to make a video about this next week & will tag you when it's all done :)

I wish I lived near you!! The temps here in the Winter are 50-60’s in the day and 40’s at night with an occasional dips into the 20’s. I really want to put mine outside SOON! My cacti are outside all the time and are fine (prickly pears). I better wait till the temps are consistently in the 50’s!!! I am having trouble knowing when to pot up my props! They all have little roots and little babies on them but I just feel like I should let the roots grow a little more. I’ve watched so many videos that say the roots have to be several inches long and that’s just not gonna happen in my lifetime!

Uff 20's is chilli 🥶But otherwise your winter temps are not that different to ours- the coldest it gets is usually about 32 tho, but it normally hangs around 40-60 in winter. Most of our succulents don't mind but i do have shadecloth over them which stops mild frosts. Re repotting props- personally i repot anything and everything in Spring-Summer, even when the roots are quite small. They tend to respond well to fresh potting mix once they start growing in Spring. But, ultimately, it's up to you. I'll make a video on this soon :)

Love your videos. I used to work for a company that made floral and succulent arrangements. From the top down these things are never meant to last. It's a vanity piece. Most of the pots don't have drainage, the soil used is cheap and not specifically designed for the plants needs. then you cramp the plants and use some kind of top dressing to hide the soil. It's really a recipe setup for failure. I feel like your doing the right thing with the haworthia arrangements. It's a nice introduction to succulents, and a good way to teach people about plants and their needs, without the guilt felt when a plant dies. It can be done better.

Thank you so much 😀 yeah, i see them a lot around and it doesn’t help that most advice (and big gardening websites!) market succulents as indoor plants. I make both- colourful outdoor arrangements and indoor ones. People definitely like the colourful better, however, I always make sure to warn everyone that they will eventually die indoors. Most customers are usually happy to settle for Haworthia/Gasteria pot tho. I try and make them more appealing by adding something like a chain of hearts. I would hate to think i’m selling something that will die and also many customers live locally. there’s nothing worse than having someone come back and say their plants died 😅.. I originally started this channel to try correct some of the misleading info about succulents..

What is your formula for a good potting mix? Thank you!
@SucculentGrowingTips
@SucculentGrowingTips 7 месяцев назад
I buy my succulent potting mix rather than make it. It consists of composted pine bark fines, minerals, coir, sand and slow release fertilizer and the ph is about 5-6. My personal experience is that a good quality succulent potting mix from the shops is usually better than homemade stuff as the pH and nutrients are tailored to succulents specifically. I will be making a video soon after Christmas on the succulent potting mix we use 🙂

Addition from the other end of the globe: #9: Frost. Many varieties of succulents are actually a bit tolerant to very mild frost, but they need to get familiar with it first. For most succulents frost is a sure way to leave for good. Note that it is the plant freezing itself, not the surrounding temperature itself. Frost causes the water in the cells to crystallize and completely shred its inner tissue. So, in my exp., the less water is in the plant, the higher the chances are that it will survive being frozen. That the concentration of salts and sugars is higher in the cell if there is not that much water might have to do with it as well, but thats just an educated guess. Anyway, if you have any doubts whether or not your plant can take frost. DON`T try. #10 My personal nemesis: Hail. Does not directly kill the plants 99.999999% of the time, but makes them unsellable. :/ Having dozends of little wounds can cause them to get infected with fungus later tho.

@SucculentGrowingTips Год назад
Yes, yes & yes 🙌 I was going to include frost but then somehow completely forgot. I even pulled out old photos of succulents with frostbite & still forgot 😅🤦‍♀ Hail is awful- i've once 'lost' 30% of my plants to a bad hailstorm. They lived and eventually grew out of their wounds a year on, but i could not sell them... 😕

Fungus gnats destroy some of the small plants and I do not know how to get rid of them unfortunately.
@SucculentGrowingTips
@SucculentGrowingTips 8 месяцев назад
That is great point- thanks for sharing! We don't really have them much as most of our production happens outdoors and the potting mix is not their favourite either but i know they can establish in greenhouses& indoors. I'll see if i can make a video on them 🙂
