I supposed the children are written as bad-mannered for the purpose of the story. The movie starts with the children having no appreciation of Christmas and ends with a significant take on it. Having no respect to their aunt is a given considering the plotline as well. Children in media are usually portrayed as bordering the end of the spectrum to make the story more interesting and to develop the characters, the children, as well. Imagine starting a story with the children loving Christmas already and ending it with the same intensity. No development means a boring structure. Nikolas having more connection to his toy as a "toy" than food is because his late mother gave that to him. It's also a device to portray that Aunt Carlotta is a minor antagonist serving the story to allienate Nikolas from his home. which was once warm when he and his father used to live together. It has now gone cold because of Aunt Carlotta taking over the household. I agree with you on your third point, however. The elves could have atleast checked if the father was still alive. I jot this down to either lack of time developing the story, or lack of creative control considering the fact that this movie is supposed to be targeted to minors. The latter being that dying on-screen will require movies to change the rating to an older audience. That's why all the characters that have died in it are within dialogues only. Overall, to teach a good lesson and tell a good story, you need to start from a negative state or pull it down from a positive state to a negative state, and then work up from there to a positive state again. Starting everything positive and never dipping down just makes a bland story telling in general.

@@ambientoblivion that is very kind of you sharing your point however if you notice all that you are doing is defending the TV production but not the moral value or deep feeling that should transcend ratings or a commercial gain, especially in this kind of theme. Yes, the story is appealing but the tone and depth of it are shallow and deeply disturbing as those kids first do not change at all, at the end the tons of presents distract of any deep feeling.. most of the kids would act in that way seeing all those presents, so the surprise and consideration towards Christmas is not presented for affirming values of respect, love to each other, kindness but that of presents. As for the rating decision of not showing his father dead would have been very easy to solve in two lines in the dialogue but they did not... it is a really horrible story dressed with a lot of sugar.. yes it is true one can choose to see just the sugar but I dont think this is the right thing to do or to endorse. Of course, it is just an opinion as all of us have to right to have one and express it respectfully. For me, it is a horrible, shallow, patronizing show.

@@diegocorrea5143 What do you mean? The children changed not because of the presents but because of the aunt's story. They weren't interested at first but during the progression, they showed their care for the characters and the story itself. I have no problems defending a company that can not only tell a good story but teach values to children. If they earned well from this film, they deserve it very much. In traditional psychology, what shrinks would normally do is understand what the problem is by getting there themselves and then finding their way out of it so that they can teach the way to their patients. Even today, it's still practiced. In story telling, it goes the same way, especially in instilling values. If a story wants to teach the value of respect for the elders, it should introduce characters lacking it, then slowly guide the viewers by making the characters their wagon on the way there. The story's "wagon" was, at best, typical, but it does the job without complications. It's a children's movie after all.
