I've been wanting a more inspiring type of journal to start painting more girls in, so I decided to watch a few vids on RU-vid and make my own "junk journal". It was tedious once I got into the sewing, but it was all worth it in the end! I'll definitely be making more in the future.

I just found this and I LOVE that you include mistakes and didn't edit them out!!!! It helps me learn and be aware! You are a good teacher without words! Also, trivial, but I really appreciate your music choice. I didn't want to mute it and it became rather "zen" watching you!

I watched this the other night..totally forgot to comment..but it's all good because I came back to watch it again!!😁 Firstly, I agree with Heather...this ain't no junk journal!! I'd pay good money to own one like that!! Secondly, that texture and colour on the covers *Insert drool emoji..if they had one!!* So LUSH!!!! And when you added the gold..oh boy! That made my heart sing!! I love the drippage on the inside covers and flicks! Gotta love Flickage and Drippage. lol. I also love the closure, GENIUS!! All in all..I absolutely love this journal!! (p.s. sorry for the long comment...just so much lush-ness to comment on! lol) 😘 xox

+Annabelle Avila you know what, I just realized I had told u that u could find the making of my denim journal pad in my MTL playlist and that's not even where it is. It's in the "the making of" playlist...Which I guess u ended up finding since you've now seen the junk journal too lol. Sorry about that! So glad u liked the vid and yes, definitely pull out some old books and papers and make one too! Although I struggled with the binding, it was super fun to make! Tfw

fell out of my chair laughing when you sewed a signature in up side down. your hand gesture said it all. Good to know I am not the only one who has done that. But truthfully the cover is knock dead beautiful.

I am new to junk journaling. I have only attempted one. Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I love your style. One thing I love most is that you let us see your mistake (upside down signature). It gives me courage to try to make another journal. If someone as talented and experienced as you can make a mistake, I can forgive myself and try again!!!

Stumbled across your video, love how you did the cover, what type of paper did you use on the front to scrunch? Those paints are fabulous, I just have plain old cheap ones! Where did you get the little heart and clip thingies? Turned out beautiful! :)

Hey Susan :) The paper used on the cover was regular tissue paper used for gifts. And the paints are actually super cheap! I usually pay about $1.49 each. They're just craft paints. But they're great!! The heart & chains are from old jewelry. Thanks so much for watching. Glad you liked it!

Thanks for watching, gracist! I agree, gold is everything! I use it constantly and its all over the cover lol. but I'm assuming you meant on the wooden heart? after doing it, especially in person, it looked pretty janky lol. just didn't fit the wood. but I loooove gold too!

Nooooooooo.......!!! Sam! Like a lottery ticket with the wrong numbers on it, that upside down signature was still a winner! With your creative imagination, you could have come up with something so totally unique to your art style, you would have had us all in a tither. Sometimes simple mistakes challenge us to become better thinkers, problem solvers..., better artists! "Try" to let go of the "mistake" mentality and embrace the uniqueness of the situation, in order to overcome what you see as a blooper. As a dear man once said..., "There are no mistakes. Lol omg it was sooooo frustrating lol. But well worth it in the end. Funny thing is, I used cheap embroidery thread so it'll probably fall apart once I get it wet with all kinds of mediums lol

You sewed it in upside down for us - so we could remember to check before we sew OR to see that an oops is not a big deal OR...LOL You sure tried to use that gold paint in there but never did seem to like it. Isn't that frustrating. I want to use this but I just don't like anything I do with it. Been there. I enjoy your channel. Cheers

did you only use one piece of packing tape, and does that hold it together ok ? I've always used duct tape and quite a bit of it.

Yes, just the one piece. I haven't worked alot in the journal yet so I'm not sure how well it'll hold up...but when tugging on the pages it seems pretty sturdy. I planned to reinforce each page that isnt fabric with masking tape down the midle before designing anything on it that includes any water media...maybe that will help. This was my first time altering a cover like this...have you used packing tape in the past with bad results? Maybe I should be ready for it lol...

KissMyCreative no I've never tried packing tape, my next book I'm going to try that Kraft tex paper fabric so I don't have to sew on the book at all. I love your video and plan on doing some mixed media with my altered books.

It's a great little book, BUT I have to object to demolishing a perfectly nice example of Kahlil Gibran. The Prophet is a classic and for a reason... as you changed the covers completely, it would have been better not to destroy a book, but to make covers from scratch. It's not difficult. (If the example was not perfectly nice, then I'd appreciate if you showed in the next video how the pages were torn or drawn onto or something... even if you have to "fake" the destruction, and "prepare" the book in beforehand and doodle something in it yourself... :-D Just not show that part :-D)

+Ketutar Jensen Hi Ketutar. Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion. I am aware that there are people such as yourself who do not like when books are re-purposed/recycled, which is totally ok with me. To each their own and I would never tell you to be anything but yourself :) However, this is the way in which I chose to do my art journal, and not only was the cover recycled, but the book pages have been kept and will also be put to use. The book itself had no meaning to me personally and was found in a recycling bin. It would have been recycled and reused somehow anyway. Just a suggestion... if you see me post a video in the future making another junk journal then maybe skip that video and not watch it. I'm pretty sure I will use old books again in the future to recycle and I wouldn't want to offend the book lovers lol. Thanks again for watching :)

I'm not offended by people repurposing books, I do it myself as well, it's just some books I have problems with - like books that look perfectly nice... that someone just tossed it in garbage doesn't make it any better, on the contrary... Nevertheless, my intention was not to judge you or berate your or anything like that, I was suggesting something to make the blow feel less for people to whom books are almost sacred... a little bit of...I don't know how to express it in English... everyone knows it's acting, but also understands why, so one can appreciate the gesture... that is, to say the book is not in good condition, even if you have to make it so yourself... some doodles with a marker in a couple of pages, or a ripped page wouldn't make the paper unusable to you, but would make the book less valuable as a book, if you understand what I mean. +Ketutar Jensen Hi there :) I do totally understand how u feel and what you're saying. I guess I just don't feel like I should have to do anything I wouldn't normally do. Essentially, I do my art for me and my process alot of times just comes from within and what my heart and soul is telling me to create, so to do something outside of my creative process for the sole purpose of pleasing others who may be watching, kind of defeats the whole thing to me. you know what I mean? I hope I'm not sounding rude or anything. I really do appreciate your feedback. I guess I just want to do what I want when it comes to art and I'm not usually thinking about others in those moments. Could be a bit selfish, but if think if there's one thing I can be selfish about in this life, it's my art lol.

Hey there Lynn, thanks for watching, but unfortunately, as you can see in the video, the book has already been altered lol. But why have you been looking for this book for over 30 yrs??? You can get it in pretty much any book store. And if you would prefer to order it online you can get it on amazon for about $10. It's actually a very easily accessible book. I'm not sure if I should say thank you or not lol. Thanks for watching? I'm not a teacher and I don't make step by step tutorial videos, I mostly just share my art journey through my process and many people get great inspiration from it. There are a plethora of wonderful artists on RU-vid who do step by step walkthroughs that I'm sure you'd love. One good thing is that these videos have comment sections meant for conversation and questions should u have one. I'm always here to answer. Anywho, sorry u thought it was the worst video but hey, such is life. I definitely don't expect to please everyone on the internet. That's just impossible lol.
