It was a good film. Somewhat different from the stage play, but the music is and was great. Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood literally made it a success. Both were great for the role. Who cares what critics said. I don't go by critics' opinions. The only opinion that counts, is my own. The ending was both funny and great. The bull charging into everything causing buildings to collapse.

This was a great movie and the critics hated it. They don't make them like this anymore, and the actor's personalities are incomparable. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has a fairly large appearance and it is a truly funny film. I saw Lee Marvin in LA once and he was incredibly handsome, was wearing a suit and walking with military bearing - the whole world stopped to stare at him.

I lived outside North Powder, a tiny town (then less than 300 people) just north of Baker (now officially Baker City) and was just a child when the movie production arrived. It was unreal and like an invasion. The park in Baker was turned into a campground of "hippies" as they were called. My eyes must have been as big as Frisbees because we had never seen anything like it. It didn't last long but it was talked about for years. Everyone had a "I saw Lee Marvin" story, etc. No one knew Clint Eastwood then as we would later.

In 1969 I had somehow won a sound tack LP from the movie BEFORE I ever saw the film. So I had memorized all the songs. I have seen this movie many times. It is a great movie. Marvin and Eastwood do their own singing. The movie was made when Hollywood was at the peak period of both the musical and the western. The songs and the scenery evoke the feeling and optimism of the time, and also the isolation and loneliness of being so far from home. The costumes, the horses and all the supporting cast were great.

By the way... the closest town to the filming site is Baker City, OR. I was there in 2001, and their town museum has a model of the whole town of "No Name City." They actually used "hippies" as "gold miner" extras. They had the look. The museum docent at that time remembers all the "hubbub" surrounding the filming of the movie. The filming site is way out of town in the mountains, so you'd have to ask at the National Forest HQ how to get out there, but it is accessible via forest roads.

My grandfather had this on VHS when I was a kid. I must have watched it a hundred times. I didn't know anything about it being a critical failure. I just knew that men, this vision of masculinity, was painted on the screen as being both beautiful and desperately needing women. :) I knew anything was possible, including failure, and that love was bigger than I could imagine, but maybe not as permanent as I would like.

Yes it is. I am always touched by Jean Seberg - she was one of Eastwood's many affairs (during the making of this film), and it hurt her. Between her mental issues, FBI investigation and blacklisting, and abusive husband, she would only live another 10 years, committing suicide in 1979 in France... From Wikipedia: .."On September 8, nine days after her disappearance, her decomposing body was found wrapped in a blanket in the back seat of her Renault, parked close to her Paris apartment in the 16th arrondissement. Police found a bottle of barbiturates, an empty mineral water bottle and a note written in French from Seberg addressed to her son. It read, in part, "Forgive me. I can no longer live with my nerves."[44] In 1979 Seberg's death was ruled a probable suicide by Paris police[1] but the following year additional charges were filed against persons unknown for "non-assistance of a person in danger".Romain Gary, Seberg's second husband, called a press conference shortly after her death where he publicly blamed the FBI's campaign against Seberg for her deteriorating mental health. Gary claimed that Seberg "became psychotic" after the media reported a false story that the FBI planted about her becoming pregnant with a Black Panther's child in 1970. Romain Gary stated that Seberg had repeatedly attempted suicide on the anniversary of their child's death, August 25. Seberg is interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse, Paris, France." Very sad end to her life.

This was a massive hit in Australia. Everyone loved it. Only watched it the other day on DVD on an 8ft wide movie screen. Wish there was Blue Ray release. Interesting for this movie was what CAMELOT should have been, a lusty tale, instead CAMELOT was rather flat except for the music. Richard Harris was confined unfortunately.

@SacredArts1 Agreed and never trust the critics. They have their own reasons for coming to their own conclusions, and they are rarely autonomous or independent. There is a lot to like about this film from the humor to the songs to the melancholy drama of the full story arc to the great landscape setting. It gets a bit farcical at the end, but its a good tale, well told, and stands up well four decades later. A must see for any cinephile and fan of comedic western musicals~!

So, how did they run the horses through the river, with all of the rocks and unlevel bed, and not have them twist and ankle or break a leg? Was that paved and then the water run through so it was smooth for them? I know no one here can likely answer it, but I've always wondered if the horses were okay in that scene.
