As a kid, in the 50's and 60's ... I remember thinking it was a comeback of the Live Action 1950's Television show of the same name. but in the U.S. it was called Planet Patrol. Then seeing the commercial for it on BBC TV, I thought it was trying to be _Fireball XL5._ But watching the series was a lot of fun, that us kids acted out on the Playground too. 👍👍& 5⭐

I am planning to spoil myself and buy the Blue Ray dvd of Space Patrol, because after watching your vid, my love affair with the TV show has come back for the first time since the 1960s, I remember me and my cousin Julie wanting an episode at Christmas time, it involved a planet inhabited by a flying lizard creature, a highly creative series.

As a boy I absolutely fell in love with Space Patrol. I was hooked from the very first time I saw that opening sequence. Space Patrol had a dream-like, other-worldly feel to it which, along with all the amazing electronic sounds, was exactly right to fire a young boy's imagination. Thank you to Roberta Leigh and Arthur Provis (and others). Even as a sixty year old I still have wonderful memories of watching Space Patrol.

Same here. It still stands the test of time as a 63 year old. It still led with some really original concepts like the Gallisphere and sleep travel. Not even sci Fi had that yet.

As a small child I found the electronic theme music to be absolutely terrifying. Of course, this kind of robotic, machine-like percussive sound was a precursor to "industrial music" some 10-15 years later.

I grew up with this show- vague late afternoon almost gothic series. Highly innovative programme with interesting characters ie Slim , Captain Dart and strange Husky. Incredible hardware. especially the scope of the Space City. Roberta and Arthur had nerves of steel!

What made an impact with me is that the Century 21 had great difficulty getting their puppets to walk smoothly, despite the otherwise superb quality of their productions, and yet on Space Patrol the puppet looks almost human in its gait. Very interesting video!

I remember watching this when I was a kid in 1964 on WPIX out of New York. The music and the sounds stuck with me. Not to mention the appearance of the Galasphere in the opening credits just zooming past and receding into the distance.

The moody answer to the pulp thrills of Fireball XL5, and inarguably the best of Leigh's forays into sci-fi. Love the atmosphere of the series, and some of genuinely sinister under (and over) tones. Proud to own the Network blu-ray before they went under.

I used to watch it as a very young kid. It had an unusually serious and even dark ambiance for a show aimed at young children. I found a few of the episodes genuinely scary at that young age. I still remember the episode where the robots went crazy and one of them slugged Marla, knocking her unconscious. Not what you'd expect in a children's puppet show.
@QualityCandor
@QualityCandor Год назад
@@stevenlitvintchouk3131 That episode is wild. Funnily enough, it's just that sinister quality that also made the series work in a way Leigh's other stabs didn't. "Paul Starr" was a trainwreck and "Solarnauts" was leigh cramming what should've been an hour-long show into a half-hour. Both lack the strange, eerie dignity of "Space Patrol."

I was hoping that the video would explain how they came up with the design of the Galasphere. Its shape was unique at a time when most SF spaceships (even for adult TV or movies) were just glorified V-2 rockets.

All the amazing electronic sounds. The stories were good as well. As others have said, i still preferred Fireball XL5, but for space things, this comes a very close second. So much so, that ive pre-ordered the bluray, and will watch it avidly to recall my childhood yet again. Thanks for bring it back Anderson Entertainment 👏👌❤️

This was one of my favourite shows as a child, nice space craft, cracking space city and the theme music was just the pulsing sound of the city. With space suits instead of 'oxy-gum' and humans hibernating while the robots flew the shipas a sci fi fan I thought it was one of the better efforts out there. Never did find out what the Yobba rays did though.

Xl5 had Space Patrol beat in almost every department (puppets, models, sets, music and voice cast), but where the Roberta Leigh series excelled was in how sophisticated the stories were. Yes there were some inconsistencies (how could the whole series take place in 2100 when some episodes include months of space travel time?), but on the whole the stories felt far more 'grown up'. For the record, I do prefer XL5, but credit where it's due

Honestly I wonder whether Gene Roddenberry was aware of this production. A ship’s architecture that looks nothing like the space rockets of other sci-fi visions, a mysterious propulsion system way ahead of conventional thrust engines, a crew that included exogenous personnel with pointed ears… hmm. I loved SP although I remember only a brief season. So utterly unlike anything else at that time. I was obsessed with all things space and sci-fi and SP was as exciting and different as Star Trek was later to be.
