Because it was the first computer animated feature film. You see, until Toy Story came out, people were used to hand drawn animated films.

Well, hand drawn animation is when a character’s actions are drawn onto a piece of paper, and when you put lots of drawings together you get the illusion of movement. CGI animation is when you move a character inside a computer.

Well, stop motion animation is when you take a puppet or something, and pose it one frame at a time.
