Over the years, races and circuits have come and gone. And with 2020 seeing the return of circuits such as Istanbul Park and Imola just to name a couple, it further made me want to make a what went wrong on this particular track. See, this is actually a popular racing location, and if you aren’t a fan of Hermann Tilke’s designs, just hear me out on this. Because this is no Yas Marina, it’s no Sochi.
It’s Sepang, and the Malaysian Grand Prix. What Went Wrong?

as a malaysian myself, i believe malaysia still have a lot of f1 fans (though still not much as moto gp). i keeps seeing people wearing the mercedes-petronas tshirts in public. the problem is the ticket price, the f1 tickets prices are almost 2-3x more than moto gp tickets thus the low attendance. still hoping its back on calender tho. i started watching f1 recently and im sad its gone from the calender.

true. the ticket prices are not affordable for locals. they dropped the price for the final race, and see what happened. Lots of local fans coming for the race. Spot-on analysis. I'd add when F1 promoter changed the 2016 calendar by having back-to-back races between Singapore and Malaysia (previously MAL scheduled in April), it literally confirmed the elimination of the latter sooner or later. It'd be hard to compete with Singapore GP in terms of country's transportation hub and more importantly its glamour (Monaco wanna-be).

The Malaysian Grand Prix tickets are hideously expensive for the average Malaysian. Now I’m a middle class Malaysian, and grandstand tickets cost on average 1/3 my monthly salary. Even the K1 Grandstand costs a lot. And I haven’t even started talking about the exorbitant prices of food and drinks on the circuit. When a can of Coke costs 4x as much as what it usually cost outside, hard to really get repeat customers. It may be cheap for foreigners, but for the locals it’s certainly not! Plus car racing is not really that big of a deal for most Malaysians. It’s bloody costly so average Malaysians aren’t involved. The ones that managed to be in F1 like Alex Yoong and Fairuz Fauzy have rich families. So the only ties we Malaysian have with F1 is just Petronas. MotoGP however is another story. Not only is it more accessible to the public, there are actually Malaysians racing in Moto GP with more success than any of the F1 drivers ever managed. Heck, Sepang sponsors a racing team which will field Valentino Rossi next season! No wonder the Moto GP race saw attendance around 100,000 per race.
@Sunotmy
@Sunotmy 3 года назад
malaysian tickets are the cheapest on the calendar and should not be used as an excuse. Tickets for K1 is about RM300 but then u had promotions by sepang that sometimes make 50% discounts. Malaysia F1 FAIL is because low promotion by organisers and MALAYSIANS IN GENERAL are not that keen on the sport.
@Sunotmy
@Sunotmy 3 года назад
tickets on average is at least RM1000 or even more in other circuit, malaysian GP IS THE CHEAPEST and people still complain
@tiadaid
@tiadaid 3 года назад
@@Sunotmy RM 300 is still expensive when you consider the average salary for Malaysians are around RM 2, 441 before deductions. To put things into perspective, RM 300 will only get you a Hillstand ticket for F1. But for MotoGP, that same amount will get you a grandstand ticket. Heck, I make 3x that and I still couldn’t justify spending 1/6 of my salary to watch the race every season at the grandstand. It's cheap if you earn USD/GBP/SGD/AUD etc. But not if you earn MYR.
@Sunotmy
@Sunotmy 3 года назад
@@tiadaid this is standardized price bro. not even EU average can afford F1 tickets willingly they have to save money from the start of the year if they wanted to go. some even opt out to go SG because prices of tickets are too high. The only difference is the high class are big there so they can afford the luxury but middle class citizen struggle so they go to Asia where prices are a lot cheaper. Sepang is very very cheap price already as I mention they even give discounts at an already lower amount and that in turn sometimes make them cause a deficit.

For reference, Singapore's tickets can be as low as S$38 for walkabouts during free practice, while the cheapest seats goes for S$288 I remember (at turns 17 & 18, where the Float @ Marina Bay provides ~1/4 of the entire circuit's seating. Then grandstand tickets go for S$1,388 (~RM4100/€950/£800) (turns 1-3 & 7-8 (beside the Civilian War Memorial) or S$2588 (start/finish straight, opposite the paddock), which is ~1/3 & 2/3 of the starting monthly salary of a fresh engineering Bachelor's graduate in the country

This is one of the most difficult tracks that I love since I got into Formula 1 gaming and Motosport gaming since Elementary School days. It takes time to really enjoy and love this track. This was one of the most frustrating racetrack to get used to especially Turn 6, Turn 7 and Turn 8. Those 3 turns were nightmares, I was inconsistent and frustrated because in real life everybody literally able to pull those corners perfectly. But years passsed I really grow loving this track. I visited this track when I was 13 years old on off season occassion. Yes, it's a very hot place during mid day but it's such perfect place for anything motosport related. I was sad when the track had to say goodbye to F1 in 2017. It's one of Tilke's masterpiece and represent a part of Malaysia. The final 2 corners, Turn 3 to 4 and Turn 9 were my favorite parts of the track. Yeah, it's the marketing that don't actually help the attendance number as well. I guess if Sepang return, the Grand Prix must be the first round of the year or the final race of the year. It IS a very big struggle to introduce Formula 1 to Asian viewers ESPECIALLY South East Asia. It will also takes drivers other than Alexander Albon from South East Asian nations to make the attendance higher and easier for Formula 1 to be familiar in the public ears in South East Asia, beside how F1 related to road cars ofc.

It was also a bummer they moved the race so close to Singapore. Having it so close to Singapore GP made sense logistically but when it was a week apart, I guess the "spectacle" of the night race drew the crowds there instead. A damn shame, in my opinion. Cost of tickets, like most of the Malaysians below mentioned, was also a killer. Can't wait for it to come back

Motorcycle culture are mostly more popular in Southeast Asia. They're more affordable and suitable to the streets there. That's also probably the reason why Thailand snagged a slot in the MotoGP calendar. Also, in the 1990s Malaysia hosted a MotoGP race in Shah Alam, before the Sepang circuit was made. There was also a race in Indonesia's Sentul circuit. Those tracks also hosted the World Superbike races in the 1990s.

Genuinely disappointed to not see Sepang anymore. There seems to be an inherent flaw in the model of formula 1. It always comes down to it being too expensive to hold a race for the circuit to leave any sort of buffer in case there's a dip in ticket sales. F1 whilst being the pinnacle of motorsport is now trying to change by introducing budget caps but I hope it's not too little too late. Also they don't seem to advertise aggressively enough to inoculate some sort of growth among the people. I am an Indian and here it's like this sport simply doesn't exist. I hope the sport makes some BIG changes.

I went to Malaysia in 2014. And out of the entire race calendar I found the tickets to be the MOST affordable (due to the exchange rate). I’m living in NZ and I found going to Malaysia more affordable than going to Melbourne. I got my tickets at an early bird sale they had in December, but having said that all tracks including Singapore (which I’ve been to twice) have early bird sales. I’m not sure that ticket sales are the only issue as I believe that the Sepang Circuit and organizers are involved in the 1 Malaysia scam that the previous PM is involved in and some of the money that was embezzled was probably some of the F1 money. The idea of the break is partly to distance themselves from the scandal and hopefully attract sponsors. MotoGP may be more popular but I don’t think they ever had a full house at Sepang either.

As a Malaysian F1 fan, I don't see F1 returning to Sepang anytime soon. Probably because as what you said, Malaysians are more into MotoGP. That being said, I really wish that more Malaysians would come to appreciate F1 more for it to return to Sepang, hopefully... One thing that would definitely attract more locals and fans across the world is the return of the screaming v10s!! (v8s are acceptable too I guess xD)

Went there once, and sadly the second time isn't going to arrive any soon. It's understandable this Grand Prix had to be cancelled for all sort of reasons. But as a local, nothing beats watching F1 live than watching it online. Still remains a F1 and Scuderia Ferrari fan up to date, still hope we'll be seeing resurrection of Malaysian Grand Prix and the Italian anthem would be playing at the top of the podium.

one way to settle it; GET A FULL TIME MALAYSIAN F1 DRIVER IN ANY TEAMS (BACKMARKERS WOULD DO). in my opinion, Malaysians would attend more in MotoGP because they were there to support their Malaysian riders. Hafizh Syahrin, Zulfahmi Khairuddin both scored podiums there and the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) was in blazing with Malaysian roars. as of right now, Malaysia has their own Moto3, 2 and GP team as well with the Petronas Sprinta Racing competing in it. With Petronas as their main sponsors and the Malaysian government gave full commitment in making new prodigees in Motor Racing, i see more years to come for MotoGP to come to Malaysia than F1.

As a local young Malaysia people,it was very difficult and hard to said about what happened the international sepang circuit racetrack of formula 1 race series?Maybe it was the financial organisation sponsor problem like that,it was so.During the day it was the greatest history of the time that Malaysia never had built national racetrack like international sepang circuit in 1997 from the past in 70s through 80s,Malaysia country has a good prehistoric treasure and a beautiful ecosystem source variant around the world you know what? That's why Malaysia favourite motorsport racing series formula 1 disappeared on the year mid 2010s is the 2017 the last formula 1 race series,because sometime it had wrong the way I'd said about earlier that thing.The problem was is the malaysia economy and also political was not stable,That's why it has always like that.Malaysia formula 1 race series take a break in 5 years,it was very sad and tear in my hearts.Well we will see another next year and next decades the result what will be look like.

As a southeast asian People, I think MotoGP is much more attractive race because it's "The People Race"...Majority of the people here use motorbike as their daily transportation..and also, you can see a lot of "Valentino Rossi's bike" or "Marquez's bike" on your way to work or when you going home... meanwhile.. F1 is considered as "the elitist Race" due to their high price on the ticket and the luxury around it from the cost of the car and everything around it

Speaking as a Malaysian die-hard F1 fan: Not only the ticket sales, but the way that Malaysian-style business model meant that this circuit was doomed to fail from the beginning. This is because of the government of Malaysia wanted many of the companies (SIC (the circuit) being one of the them) to be owned by Khazanah Nasional, the national sovereign investment fund that owns the largest companies in Malaysia (i.e. Malaysia Airlines, Petronas, Twin Towers), or becoming government linked companies (GLCs). This is key because the government can use cronyism to siphon money from this business. The former track owner was Mokhzani Mahathir, son of the Prime Minister of Malaysia and current public enemy no1 of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad. This can link to strong corruption as Mahathir's traditional business policy was that the cost always barred with the business, however any numbers of sales always went into the pockets of the politicians. This is why companies like Malaysia Airlines are currently facing liquidation. Sepang nearly faced the same fate until a political crisis in 2015, which would see Mahathir ousted from his party, and see Mohkzani lose power to Razlan Razali. Also having written a 4000-word essay on this topic for school, many of its external stakeholders that I have done primary research on such as the main hotel, Sama Sama Hotels that partnered with circuit on thing such as catering towards guests i.e. drivers. The hotel, a 5-star hotel a walk away from the circuit said that everytime the F1 circus would come to town, they would reap in huge profits, every room booked to its fullest capacity. So this made me wonder? How can the circuit still not have high attendance figures if a 5-star hotel next to the circuit is booked fully? Doesn't make sense. Absolutuely devastated we have lost this race ps. I am open for a deeper conversation about this :)

the fall of Sepang F1 is more than just video key factors... They are also 1. Super expensive F1 rights to host the race 2. The 1.5 turbo makes F1 sounds under whelming 3. New F1 regulations makes the car way less exciting I still remembered the days of high pitch v12, v10 engines... now the car sounds like puppy in a Lion King movie

I know I'm a year late but I agree, the ticket prices are hella expensive. I mean, even if you pick Hillstand (which is in my opinion, the best seat to get btw), they're around RM50-RM60. Not to mention that the foods and drinks prices are high too. And the Grandstand can cost around RM70-RM90 too. My family loves F1 and it sucks to see that F1 is no longer held in Malaysia. I mean, if the ticket price can be dropped a bit more, we will definitely fill up the Hillstand or Grandstand though. And I really hope they bring back one day, since Max and Lewis word championship battle is getting more and more heated.

Every generation of F1 fans goes through this. As a fellow Aussie, let me just welcome you to the feelings... many of us felt the same way when Adelaide was replaced by Melbourne, and I felt the same way seeing Imola go....though I am also going to get to feel that one coming back. But it is what it is. My old man was never a motor racing guy... even the mountain held no allure... and even though he owned HT Monaro GTS...he only bought it because my Uncle his older brother, bought an Falcon XYGTHO Phase III..thats the kind of car guy he was... a guy whos' favourite car EVER was the EDSEL Fords....that should say enough..... .......BUT... he was born in 1918 he had me at 60.... so he grew up in the golden age of GP racing.... and he used to talk about Brooklands..which closed way back in 1939! He used to mention 'what Spa used to be'....and talk about Grand Prix being ultimate racing movie because that was what it used to be.... I was like 'Meh, f*ck he's such an old man...er.. man'..under my breath... until Adelaide went, and Imola too... .....it's just something every generation of Grand Prix fans goes through. I remember Argentina, and LA, and Detroit, and Imola, and Kyalami too, and have an older cousin who thinks Watkins Glen was the greatest of all F1 race tracks etc etc. That said I love Marina Bay, and I love COTA and Azerbaijan... for everything you lose, you gain usually too... I even grudgingly appreciate Albert Park... though nothing beats the Adelaide streets! So yeah, Malaysia is gone, but we get Imola, and have Singapore, and Mexico came back and we have seen some great comeback, and new, tracks in the last few years. You're definitely right about the costs though. They need to change that for ALL races.

And it's expensive, and for who don't live in São Paulo (host city) gets more and more expensive, I recognize why the grand stands are empty on some circuits, a ticket that worth almost half of a considerable part of population makes per month ( Between R$1,200.00 and 1,500.00 ) it's insane!

I think this highlights a serious problem with the calendar. It’s constantly being expanded yet the only ones to ever drop off either weren’t prepared for the race in the first place (South Korea, India) or were alright, middle tier tracks that didn’t have a ‘hook’. I can’t think of any tracks that have been dropped for the quality of the racing (Paul Ricard, Sochi and Abu Dhabi look here to stay) A lot of tracks we miss and romanticise because they no longer have races, Malaysia, Turkey, Imola being the best examples. They gave some classic races and definitely added to F1, however were pushed out by an ever expanding calendar. Meanwhile we have tracks like Catalunya, Albert Park and Hungaroring which seem permanently on the calendar for roughly 30 years with nobody having strong feelings either way towards them, yet if we lost them we’d start to remember the good races and forget all the average and processional races I think the solution to combat the ever expanding calendar without permanently losing tracks and without allowing stagnant tracks to be locked in for 30+ years would be to bring in rolling contracts. For instance could Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia each host a race twice each in 3 years, with each locations having a year off? Keeps the calendar fresh and allows for ‘expansion’ without actually adding to the number of races. Could Catalunya and Portimao alternate like we’ve seen Nurburgring/Hockenheim and Suzuka/Fuji in the Iberian GP? The ‘European GP’ could now alternate between several European tracks allowing for experimentation at new tracks and bringing back classics. The biggest downside to this would be countries aren’t going to build new tracks if they don’t think they will be on the calendar for long enough- give new tracks (E.g. Vietnam) a normal 5 year contract to start off then based on fan turnout and race quality decide whether to give them a permanent contract or whether they need to alternate. Austria only recently made it back on the calendar after paying for renovations- fantastically supported and great racing- gets a normal, non-alternating contract. Anyway great video, would love to see what your dream 20-22 race calendar would be :)

I would say one of the key issues would be marketing. I wasn't marketed as aggressive as how it was back in the 2000s. I remember watching tons of ads on TV, promoting the Malaysian GP. What, no mention of the Vettel/Stroll collision on the outlap of the 2017 race? I was there for that. I wonder if the plastic end cap of my folding chair is still in the hill stand. Sadly, I must concur that ticket prices were outside the reach of most Malaysian F1 fans, and Singapore's added glamor (I prefer the grit :P) ultimately was better at drawing foreign tourists. Sepang still hosts endurance races, so a night race is doable. However, I don't know of a significant endurance race-watching culture in Malaysia...
@YTomi26

The problem with Sepang is MotoGP and F1 itself. Motorcycle culture hype is so high in Malaysia and South East Asia making MotoGP is a go to event instead of F1. Ticket pricing of MotoGP is also cheaper than F1 and the event is held at the end of the season which have the opportunity to be a World Championship deciding race. On the other end, F1 got night race Singapore GP which is far more tourist attracting than Sepang especially those with high budget. I also think the lack of competition itself is also one of the reason what went wrong with Sepang. Malaysian and people from SEA will obviously prefer to just watch a much more exciting MotoGP race rather than spending money on both but one is far less exciting than the other one. Plus the Sepang International Circuit management is currently focusing on a project in MotoGP owning a successful team from Moto3 to MotoGP.

hey Dude.. Im wondering..! I live in Canada and I believe that you can attend the Canadian GP for as low as 60 E.. maybe thats Can $ actually.. that would be for General Admission, not an assigned seat in a grandstand.. And the prices obviously go UP from there.. What I am wondering is, are other F1 races much more expensive than the Can GP..?? I am a middle class person at best and I think $60 is a fair price to go see the most prestigious motorsports action in the world.. I live 13 hours from Montreal and Ive been to the race 3 times since 2001.. only once did i have a ticket for an actual seat, I love walking around the track and finding diff areas to view from.. Are the prices of some of the high profile races that much higher that people are not bothering..?? I would love to go to a track in another country sometime..
