He can see coverages (like Butler's ) developing, and throw to a 3rd, 4th, or 5th option. It's one of the many things he does well that simple-minded people don't see. They'd rather blame his incredible, long term success on deflated footballs. Stupid.

Carroll's explanation about the play call made some sense: Seattle had only one timeout left. NE had its goal line D in, and Lynch wasn't good on goal line runs. A short pass has low odds of being picked off, and, if incomplete, stops the clock. Belichick has nerves of steel. Millions of people watching on TV were screaming at him to call a timeout. But like Brady, he's a situational genius. He could see Seattle was waiting for him to call one. When he didn't, it puzzled Seattle, and more or less forced them to throw a pass (which Belichick preferred), in order to stop the clock (if it failed).

If he did, he would've thrown it away (or to another receiver). Brady does all of these subtle things and more within seconds It's why he's elite.

They had time to run more than 1 play but they only had one time out. It was the Genius of the Patriots that won that game by Bill Belecheck not calling the time out he threw them all out of whack and there thoroughness as a team practicing that pick play is what really won the super bowl. It's gonna be a hell of a comeback" (which is a Brady quote). I, too, got up and started yelling like a little girl and running around. One of the greatest football moments ever. And really the best example of Brady's greatness. He's just truly the BEST to ever play the game.

That is actually a common play on the goal line, not just by Seattle. If you pay attention to the whole video, one of the coaches mentions that Browner had seen enough of those pick plays in his career and recognized it, telling Malcom who his assignment was, and Browner only played for the Pats that year, iirc. It's preached by Bill all the time, situational football, and I am sure you have heard it from him a thousand times. He spends a lot of time preparing for various situations that may come up during a game, and it has paid off many times. Honestly, the two receivers were in earshot of Browner telling Malcom what was happening. If I were one of them, that would have told me they know what's coming, and to somehow relay that or call a time out. But my guess is they didn't have any instruction on what to do in that situation...seeing they know how to cover it, and what to do at that point. Not knowing, they just ran the play they were told to. Seattle had the play clock winding down and hurried the play. The bottom line is this, New England was prepared for that situation...Seattle wasn't.@@oz1751

You are one of very few people who has analyzed the situation and thought it through. Most just have a results-driven knee-jerk reaction.

I agree completely. The play call was a very low risk play too, just didn't work out. People are always way too results oriented.

Seattle did blunder, but it wasn't all on that play. Hawks needed a touchdown. It was 1:06 left when the Kearse catch happens, and he is pushed out of bounds to stop the clock. Then, the Hawks couldn't get a play off before the play clock ran down on 1st down. That means they only had one timeout left. As long as Bill didn't bail them out by calling a timeout, 1:06 is not enough time to run four running plays with only one timeout left, so there are some limitations as to play calling. We all knew first down would be a run, but that was stopped, so clock ran. With 26 seconds left when the 2nd down play was snapped, we knew that either 2nd or 3rd down would have to be an attempted pass, so they decided to pass on 2nd down, which makes sense considering if you didn't pass on 2nd and you don't make a touchdown, you would have to call a timeout and be forced to pass on 3rd and everybody would know it, whereas if the pass fell incomplete on 2nd (which happens almost all of the time at the goal line), you still keep the option of passing OR running on 3rd down. So they actually did the logical thing. But if you think about it, they burned themselves when they burned the 2nd timeout at 1:06. If they didn't call that timeout, they would have had the full playbook available to me on all four downs. By only having one timeout left, they pretty much forced themselves into a situation in which 2nd down had to be a passing play.

The most incredible part of the whole situation is Bill Belichick not taking a time out. He was quoted that he just thought "they should play through it" but I think deep down he knew he could get them into a passing situation if he let the clock run down a bit and let the emotions and panic settle in on the Seahawks sideline

When I keep seeing Malcolm Butler intercepting the pass,he caught the ball at the one yard and it seemed his momentum was carrying him back in the end zone and a Seattle player touched him.Maybe someone can correct me but that would have been a safety,lucky he still had some strength to come back out and go near the two yard line.

I'm not saying that you're wrong because you might be right. but, I think on an interception because of the way Lockette & Butler collided that it would've been a touch back because the momentum of the collision would've knocked him backwards.
