What are Corals?
The corals are sea animals that grow in shallow waters and are shaped like tiny tubes. Using their tentacles, coral polyps feed on small organisms and plankton, producing calcium-carbonate that forms the coral reef's skeleton.
Corals live in a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, which stick to the corals and provide food for them. Corals have vibrant colors because of the zooxanthellae, which, when removed, leave a bare white skeleton.
Global warming has significantly affected coral reefs, including those in the Maldives, over the past few decades. The rise in water temperatures causes corals to shed their zooxanthellae, leading to "coral bleaching", which has a disastrous effect on the marine life that depends on them.
Corals in the Maldives
Over 700 species of fish and other marine organisms are supported by close to 200 coral species. Several fish live in coral reefs, whereas some of the bigger fish visit the reefs for food.
When diving for the first time, swimmers find that the seabed resembles an alien-like world with various corals that look and feel different from each other. In the Maldives, one typically comes across hard corals that grow in large groups, increasing slowly over the years.
Corals of a yellowish color with boulder-like appearances are also found here. One of these is the brain coral, which resembles the outer shell of the brain.
