Getting a steam locomotive operational is no easy, or cheap, task. Getting a mallet up and running is even more difficult. But after a prolonged series of roadblocks and delays, the Western Maryland Scenic Railway managed to do the latter with former Chesapeake and Ohio 1309.

"Western Maryland Scenic Railroad 1309 is a compound articulated class "H-6" "Mallet" type steam locomotive with a 2-6-6-2 (Whyte notation) wheel arrangement. It was the very last steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1949 and originally operated by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) where it pulled coal trains until its retirement in 1956. In 1972, No. 1309 was moved to the B&O Railroad Museum for static display until 2014 when it was purchased by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR), who undertook a multi-year effort to restore it to operating condition. The restoration was completed on December 31, 2020, and the locomotive entered tourist excursion service for the WMSR on December 17, 2021. This was the first time an articulated locomotive operated in the Eastern United States since the retirement of Norfolk and Western 1218 in late 1991."

The Jack Showalter plates actually have a much deeper meaning than the one stated in the video. Back when Jack still had his two Pacifics pulling the grade he quickly realized that they where not going to be strong enough to pull the trains up the 3.5% grade. Due to this Jack looked around for stronger engines that can pull the grade with large trains but still get around the sharp curves of the railroad. Jack saw 09 at the B&O museum and tried to acquire her from them. Jack basically was told to go away and not to ask for 09 again. When Jack passed away his daughter inherited the engines. She sold them back to Canada, and with the money she got she put a lot of it towards 09’s restoration to complete her dads dream of having the engine run on the line. Her only request with the major donation was to have something on the engine to remember her dad and his dream to have the engine run again on the scenic.

I love seeing this! My father worked at Peach Creek when the 10 engines were there. He worked on all of them. His job, if I remember correctly, was greasing the wheels.(sorry if I don’t have correct terms) We were invited to the original opening, that didn’t happen. He would have loved to see the restored engine, but sadly passed away in 2019 @ 92. I would have flown with him from California if it had not taken longer than anticipated.😊

Thank you for this. I was born in Cumberland, in 1958, while my parents were still in college. We moved to the eastern shore of MD, when I was about 1 year old, they both studied to be teachers, and apparently, there were teaching jobs in Queen Annes County. Every summer, sometimes Thanksgiving, and on Christmas, we would go to visit my grandparents in Cumberland, and Cresaptown, I remember these trips fondly. Sometime, in the 80's, while visiting my grandmother, shortly after my marriage, we rode the Western Maryland Scenic RR, at the time it was the 2-8-0 pulling the train. Alas, since my grandmothers death, I haven't been back, I keep telling myself I will, but something always seems to get in the way.

It's changed A LOT. I'm from southern West Virginia, but traveled through Cumberland enroute to my sisters in Annapolis. Plus one of my older brother was a WV State Trooper in Mineral Co, WV and his wife a nurse at Cumberland General Hospital. After I graduated college in 86, I started my first real job in Greenbelt, Md...living in Annapolis. Spent several summers in Lewes and Rehoboth. Occasionally Ocean City. I'm back home, but still go up through that area.

The expense of steam restoration work cannot be overstated. I volunteer at the California State Railroad Museum, and they performed a large chunk of the work on Sierra Railway #3 during its restoration around 2010. Final cost was about $1.6 mil, and that's for a relatively small locomotive! Can't imagine the amount of money that went into the big engines like 4014 or 2102. Also, that music in the last segment hit me with a bunch of "There Goes an Airplane" nostalgia.

A caveat when it comes to 1309's short revenue career that I often like to add is that, while she herself had a very short career and is really only notable in being the last steam locomotive built by Baldwin for the North American market; the design Baldwin built 1309, 1308 and their immediate sisters to was actually an ALCO design from 1927, and actually earlier versions of the class had been in service with the Chessie since 1910 at least, while this last batch of 10 from Baldwin were very slightly different, they were still functionally the same 2-6-6-2 that C&O had been using for almost 40 years at that point - nearing 50 by the time she was retired. So, while 1309 wasn't massively successful, her class absolutely were by every possible metric, she just happened to be a replacement unit ordered at the very end and therefore most likely was the locomotive in the best condition when it came time to choose a couple to save. While it would've been cool if one of the older H-6s or predecessor H-4s(of which they had a whopping one hundred and fifty!) were saved... the fact we got these two is enough for me. After all many classes weren't so lucky, like the L2(4-6-4)s and the J2(4-8-2)s, or the K2/3 2-8-2s - all of which important classes to the C&O that weren't saved, nor were the H7 2-8-8-2s or T1 2-10-4s, again, both important to the C&O's history.(and rail history in general) So, I'm just glad we got these two, and the Alleghenies to represent C&O articulated engines as a whole, despite being relatively niche and recent classes within that overall category. (10 H6As vs 150 H4s)

I used to call her overrated but she’s actually pretty awesome and maybe my love for 734 blinded me back then. They both have pros and cons on the WMSRR. 734 can fit on the turntable but can struggle going up the mountain even if she can do it. 1309 can make it up with no issues but requires 2 diesels on her train.

Have 2102 visits the WMSR and dress her up as a WM Potomac or somehow aquire 2101 and do the same thing to her since the Reading T1's and WM Potomac's looks similar in appearance.

Little fun fact about that PRR T1 whistle she was wearing; the whistle belonged to the late Jerry Jacobson, the whistle was on GTW 6325 for awhile before the Age of Steam Roundhouse was conceived. AOSR donated the whistle to the PRR T1 trust fund; whom in turn let 1309 wear it for awhile to promote the PRR T1 Trust Fund's construction of PRR 5550.

For madame queen, I estimate about 5.5 million bucks. For the engine I personally wanna restore, Southern Pacific 975, my estimates are about 3.5 to 4 million simply due to her being a 2-10-2. She's not in great shape due to rust from her being originally donated to the city of Beaumont, Texas which is right on the gulf coast. She's also relatively lightweight for a 2-10-2 due to being an F1 class. In order to implement the upgrades I'd want for her, which includes roller bearings on all axles, side rods and even possibly the crosshead slide bars. This will add weight to her, but it'd be VERY worthwhile because I can run her on mainline steel and it VASTLY decreases maintenance costs.

Unfortunately, I was working there when 1309 showed up. I called that locomotive Gresham's Folly. Anything we said against that boat anchor was dismissed or grounds of termination. As a former crewmate of WMSR 734, we knew rebuilding 1309 was going to be a money pit. 734 could have been brand new and operating much sooner than 1309...but management didn't want to hear it. The big idea was for 1309 to be able to haul large Fall foliage trains without diesel assistance, but without extension of the frostburg runaround...and the track variation between the turntable and the C&P grade leading to it...they still have to use a diesel for the return trip. 🤣
