The middleweight twin and triple cylinder market is certainly getting busy.
The BMW F900R is a105hp twin cylinder, roadster. Keen to demonstrate its sporty capabilities, BMW created a race series,the F900R Cup, which certainly provided some close and entertaining one make racing.
A bike that I had been looking forward to riding for some time, I arranged to borrow one from North Oxford BMW Bikes when the forecast was "dry". It proved to be a very British sort of dry with torrential rain and standing water ...
The fact that I still enjoyed my time on it is testimony to its virtues .
In this video I explore the specifications of the bike , go for a ride , or possibly swim , on it and then make some concluding comments...

Had one, good bike, even better with pilot road 5 tyre's, mine had the electric rear suspension, witch I believe they have stopped on this model, standard seat was hard , had memory foam put in mine, The TFT is the best, I mist the triumph triple so I sold it and bought a speed.

I like the road 5/6 as well . Have them on a few of my bikes . Better in the wet than the OE Dunlops on this one . Personally I think the electronic suspension available on this model and the mode upgrades would be good . Enjoyed the one I tried but the options might make it better still .. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Ray 👍

My bike before this was a KTM SA1290R. Great bike but bigger than required. I do a lot of filter riding (London) and fair bit of motorway riding. KTM great for both, but still, ‘too much bike’ for my purposes I eventually felt (although had it 5 years and the SA1190R for 5 years before that.) So got this. Had it a year. Likes: Looks. I got the BMW colours one. With the gold forks looks v nice. Nice wide rear tyre completes the look. Size. Compact. However, actually bit small (I’m 183cms.) TFT, heated grips, cruise, BMW sat nav - all that sort of thing. Nice level of power. A bit lacking in torque. Likes to rev, although 4k sounds like 6k. Bit of a screamer. Quite a nice sound in general. Great looking exhaust. I ride this quite differently to the KTM, using lower gears and up the rev range. Can do a lot keeping in second. Quite fun as can ‘thrash it’ without doing crazy speeds. Planted on motorway, this is where heavier bike helps. Got aftermarket screen as essentially had none. Dislikes: Can be hard to modulate the clutch pulling away. Cannot seem to get it quite right. All a bit high revs. Can pull away in second (just about), but need first really. Weirdly heavy front end. Takes quite a lot of strength to turn filtering / stationary. Surprising, but because a heavy bike and cast wheels, Although a KTM was heavier, but much lighter feeling at the front. KTM spoked. Not good for very long rides. After an hour (1.5hrs max) need to get off. Ride can be harsh. Feel the bumps. KTM would soak up … not this one! 13L tank a bit on small side. Ought to be 16L. Can do about 140 on a tank. - So overall I like it. But, mainly because a bit on small side for me, will keep for time being - but will be looking to get a larger bike. Probably 1000cc sport / tourer type. But must be good for filtering (!) So F900R does have a lot going for it and probably just about perfect for the smaller rider for in town and shortish motorway rides. Luckily for bike enthusiasts there are so many to choose from - but then that can become part of the problem … which one to actually get?

Firstly , thank you for watching and taking the time to share your experience and views. People occasionally ask me whether I think the XYZ bike is better than the ZYX … your comment highlights the challenge . The answer is of course , “it depends” . How big we are , how we use a bike , what our personal preferences are , all vary . Lots of great bikes in the market . The challenge is finding the ones that suits us the best 👍

As always I really enjoyed your review Mike. Informative, objective and funny! What more do you want from a review! Inevitably, I find myself comparing it to my 8S, there’s clearly lots to like about it. Maybe it’s the depth of engineering and standard of finish. But like the 8S it’s ‘blessed’ with Dunlops. I’m curious to know what you think would be a good all-rounder? Enough ability to handle and have fun on but also some touring ability with greater range and some protection. I like your gsx s1000gt, and the new gx so maybe I’ll try one of those, or maybe I’ll have a look at an XR, though the looks are quite challenging to me. I suppose the answer is that there is no ‘one’ bike and that’s the best thing about contemplating the ‘next’ bike. Anyway, hopefully the roads dry out a bit this weekend at some point and we can get back out there. All the best!

Hi Rob , lots of good sports tourers and adventure tourers to choose from . I like the GT ( more sports than tourer) and on the adventure tourer side , like the BMW GS but it very personal and marginal . I rode the Versys 1000GT /SE recently and it is a great example of a bike that ticks ALL the boxes , but somehow just isn’t my sort of bike . Maybe the trick is , to pick a bike you love , that ticks as many boxes as you can !

No body does a bike review as good as you, nobody. It's not my kind of bike at my age, perhaps 20 years ago but i still watched the complete test. I do find that the way BMW price their bikes with all those add ons very confusing and if you choose all those toys, very expensive indeed.
@michaelmam
@michaelmam 6 месяцев назад
Thank you Ian . I think we all take in information differently . I make the videos how I like to think about bikes . A friendly introduction , an idea of what the bike is about , a ride , and some concluding thoughts . Other , very successful channels , do it in a different way , which is fine and obviously works well for many . I agree with you on bike options generally . Most makers have options at prices you wonder who would buy them but I suspect the majority of bikes bought now are on a finance pcp .. in other words a form of lease . They price up the options they want , agree a deposit and monthly payment and hand it back at the end ? I definitely feel old fashioned when I just buy them 😂

Sir- Great video. You promised 'feedback when we're out and about' concerning the 29.5° rake. The balmy weather must have made it slip your mind. To me, a discrepancy between the angles of steering head and forks is slightly unnerving. Why such an extended rake? It must have entailed an engineering complication. Enhanced straight line stability? I can't help thinking of Henry Fonda's bike in 1969 . . . It's hard to guess who this bike is aimed at.

I've had mine for four years now and it's just been an insanely good all rounder. I do big miles on it, although I live in Western Australia so weather protection isn't a concern for me. One thing to note is that I've never ridden another bike that has so much difference between riding modes. It's very dull in all but Dynamic Pro modes so if you test ride one, make sure you go through them all and see for yourself. The bike doesn't give you immediate sugar hit of the KTM Duke and Yamaha MT09, but it's just a much much better al rounder that's been extremely rewarding to live with.

I have an F800R ( 2017 ) and its a great bike - the change from putting the fuel back in the tank area as apposed to below the seat i think makes a difference - although i have never ridden a F900R . The F800R is a fun bike and the the twin motor has a real character and is no slouch - the third balance con rod and firing of each cylinder alternatively reminds me of the two stoke Yamaha RD400 - i think its one of the best motors BMW have ever built - my F800R has 3 modes on the back suspension on the fly and coupled with good tyres makes for impeccable handling - so getting the electronic rear suspension on the F900R would make all the difference - as usual a great review

With 95bhp and 211kg it should thrash the Speed Twin 1200cc* and probably rides better than the newer Triumphs. *I own a 2020 ST 1200, anxious to unload it...

Hi Fredrick , great to hear from you . I know you put great store on power to weight ratios , which I respect . The BMW is definitely brisk and as I say in the video , I would love to take one round a track albeit at my slightly pedestrian speeds . I do actually really like the triumph twin 1200 but mostly for its road torque . Very different sort of fun . Keep well 👍

I have a st900. quite great in the city, heavy traffic but not apples to fruit comparison. 900R probably like my old 750gs but lighter and more optoins; barely . but extras to be added again. I hear you can have cruise control added (yourself)? a Bit lighter than 750gs is good for pannier riding. As for triumph comparisons. GT pro is lighter; similar specs and comes with all options.

I had this bike just last week as a loan, one with manual suspension. Good lord the suspension was awful. It bounced me out of the seat over even small bumps in the road. It’s not overly firm, it’s just the spring has no damping feel, it was like riding a rigid bike. Horrible, couldn’t wait to hand it back and for me it’s a clear indication of both the deteriorating quality of roads in the UK and the relentless march of cheaper and cheaper suspension on bikes. A shame really as the 900 engine is a decent engine.

This bike is a flop! It’s an MT07 but 4 grand more.. BMW already advertising these £1500 under RRP. I quite like the styling but who would have this over a STriple RS or KTM 890 R that cost the same when similarly spec’d.A 790 Duke with a QS etc is £7000 this is £12000. A MT09 is £3000 cheaper! The SP a grand cheaper.. Outrageous prices aside! it’s boring Michael’s lack of enthusiasm in this video says it all. You can sum BMW up with the location of their SatNav holder blocking the screen in the video. More interested in screwing you over with overpriced terrible gadgets than the actual bike riding or performance. It’s sad because if they could make a mid weight naked bike that’s not terrible, it would be awesome but the MT09s and Dukes of the world have nothing to fear from this dull overpriced commuters bike. There is a gulf between the 1000 cc and above BMWs which are generally awesome, and every BMW bike under 1000cc is just bad and boring.

How negative can you be. This bike completely pisses on the MT 07 and hangs with the 09 in speed. Looks better with some accessories added. When you pipe it its sound is bonkers. The speed triple rs is way out of its league with 170 and should not be compared to the F900. Ktm 890 is actually very similar in performance but of course has more torque as it is a vtwin. Bmw made their parallel twin to be the best out there. I would buy this again over any jap twin And the street triple 765. You seem a bit clownish and a cynic. Let prople ride small shit if they like and dont fkn bully them

They sold 14,429 of the R and XR just in 2020... that is far off a flop for non-scooters, esp in that 900 class... in it always stayed in overall top10 sales of all bikes atleast in Germany every year since that. Yeah still less as the GS, so that got to be a flop... blimey! 😅
