The MAM Journals- Preparing my bikes for Winter

I have had quite a few bikes over the years and in that time, learnt some valuable lessons on how best to store them over winter. Is it better to run your bikes occasionally? How do you clean them before you store them ? Do you use battery chargers? What do you do about fuel?
In this video I outline my current end of season process and share some of my experiences. I hope that you find it interesting, informative and in some cases , helpful !
The next video , "Living with the Gen 3 Hayabusa, a bike for the modern world?" will be out on Friday the 24th of October..

Although I have been looking after the SP1 for 21 years I was relieved to hear that Roger Ditchfield' s expert opinion was close to what I had adopted . I had always sensed that they take a while to warm up properly and he confirmed it . Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment👍

@@michaelmam tip # 15.. you dont need a compressor.. I use my garden vac leaf blower 👌 to dry off my mini's & things.. real minis not those bmw fakery fraud con.. lovin your channel.. sub'd 👍 We dont have E fuels & dont winterize.. here in NZ.. but in having said that.. back in the day 🙄.. & I still do.. add 2-stroke oil/mix & slosh the tank.. if a machine is going to be sitting for a time.. leaves a light film of oil on valve seats & tank etc etc without affecting/fouling plugs etc.. & yes.. open valve seats can rust too. P.S. DON'T paint yoir wall white.. while it will reflect light back.. itll stuff up your camera imagining with background glare & loose your cameras contrast focus.. looks better that earthy colour too

Thanks Michael. It took me a while to get round to watching this one, not because I don't hang on your every word, which I do but because I am one who finds very little joy in cleaning my bikes! Very useful though, especially the information about the fuel. Like you I have difficulty selling any thing and have one bike, an old Harley 883 sportster which I doubt I will ever ride again but I fear that if I passed it on it would be used as a doner bike for a custom job and bearing in mind all the good times I've had with it over the past (30+) years I can't bear the thought of it ending its days like that. I guess that's another example of biking being very much an emotional pastime.😊

Bike cleaning certainly polarises views ! I actually find it relaxing and quite satisfying but know a few people who loath it . I will try and sell the BMW in the spring or part ex it against another bike .. needs to find a good home as , by the sound of it , does your Harley ?

Thank you for sharing your views / experience on laying up and storing and keeping motorcycles. There was nothing I disagree with. although I leave the tenders on all the time and change oil prior to laying a bike up if I will not be riding it for several months. Interesting bike collection and love the SP 1's .
@michaelmam
@michaelmam Год назад
Thanks Nigel . I try very hard not to tell other experienced motorcyclists what to do and as you rightly say it was more about sharing my approach . I think leaving the tenders is probably the right approach but I don’t fancy buying 14 😂 . The weekly switch over also allows me to check that the tenders are performing . I love the SP’s as well . They don’t love my back though 😂

Excellent Michael really interesting to see how you store your bike and omg I wish my garage was a quarter as tidy as yours but it a goal I am aiming for in my next house big de clutter afoot . I was contemplating draining all the fuel from my bike purely because of the E5 fuel but if you can gat a stabilizer that solves the problem I will indeed use that. great watch and I am so jealous of your collection 😉👍👌

Good stuff Michael. I have 6 bikes in my garage.. I have carpeted the garage and all the bikes are on paddock stands with Optimate Duo 1 battery conditioners/trickle chargers. Also added fuel stabiliser to all the tanks. Modern fuel is the bane of our lives.. 😏 Edit: I had the battery go on my ZXR.. It was on a trickle charger so I was a bit confused? Turns out I had left the ignition on & had been on a few days 🤦🏻 Edit: subbed

Some great tips there Michael, thanks! Like you, a relatively new convert to ACF50 after watching one of Missenden Flyers videos from a few years back, a rusty nail in the back garden test where (using superbly controlled laboratory conditions, lol) he tested a nail with and without ACF50. The results convinced me to give it a try. Used it form Day 1 on both my 1250GS and Duc Scrambler 1100, and both holding up very well indeed….and the GS has “done Wales” with everything it had to throw at us! If you do end up using it a lot, definitely worth investing in a compressor and a HVLP spray gun to mist it on the bike…the aerosols or trigger sprays spray far too much on. Do mine twice a year….it does smoke a bit on first startup though! Another one to consider, but not something I’ve tried myself yet, is a tip from Harry Metcalfe on Harrys Garage; he did a similar video and mentioned being able to buy fuel without any ethanol, sold as storage fuel from (I think) Angle American Oils….useful if Esso change their blend (I didn’t know that they don’t use ethanol!). Finally (“go away Spencer!”)….I’d be fascinated to see a back-to-back comparison video of the “Busa against the Kwak H2 SX. I’ve not seen one before but they seem to be very similar in their intentions?
@michaelmam

Good to hear from you . Yes , definitely need to get round to a compressor . I did ride the Kawasaki but didn’t feel I did enough miles on it to really get it . I will see if I can borrow one from somewhere 👍

I use scotoiler 365 spray as well as acf50. Excellent product. It will wash off & needs re applying Regularly But it does burn off of discs if accidentaly applied.

Thank you for this video. It reaffirmed how I think about bikes over winter and embellished it with a few tips and ideas. I think that you should sell the GS though. If you prefer the Vstrom why keep it ? I would keep the R1000rr, as it’s already a classic, as is your GSXR and you have to keep the Ducati, if only to have one in your collection ! But I don’t understand why you have ordered the Z900rssp when you have updated the suspension on your current RS? Many thanks, once again on providing these videos.
@michaelmam
@michaelmam 2 года назад
Good to hear from you Gavin . My thinking on the rs is that they probably won’t get through Euro 6 , when it arrives . If I just stay with the Jaffa it will get to 20,000 miles and begin to show its miles and no option to replace . An update whilst I can ? Jaffa is great with the Nitrons . If it doesn’t sell - I am not trying very hard- I will do a comparison with the SE 👍

Hi Michael Guessing space or cash isn’t an issue so for me I would keep the Kawasaki Z900RS but sounds like the BMW GS does need to go, simply for practical reasons. I also seem to be of fixed leg length and haven’t spotted any aftermarket parts that will change that! My legs I mean😊. Great vid and always good to a voice of experience. Got me thinking, I have a New T120, lots of chrome, and a Triumph 900 Scrambler also new but not much chrome. Got that on a PCP as I have always purchased and wanted one that I felt was disposable if that makes sense? So, Scrambler as the all year round bike and T120 on occasions. Don’t get me wrong, will still treat the Scrambler as my own as I love it. So nimble and a great flexible engine. Regards Denis

watching this vid, I was wondering what bike is your favorite but that is not a fair question, I have a number of bikes as well and each of them are my faves for different reasons but I guess the question is could you choose between the z900rs and the ZRX and why?, if you don't mind me asking.
@michaelmam
@michaelmam 2 года назад
Good question ! The ZRX is a very traditional muscle bike of its time . Big , good torque and lots of “presence”. I really like it . The Z900rs is a much more nimble and relaxed feel to it unless you decide to press on a bit and push the revs . They are probably the same in real road performance but get there in different ways . RS is a great , modern , all rounder . If I could only have one of the two I would probably choose the RS because of its flexibility . Fortunately don’t have to make that choice 👍
