Marking the 45th anniversary of the death of Walt Disney. December 15, 1966.
On the afternoon of December 14, Lilly (Walt Disney's wife) visited him and she telephoned Diane (their eldest daughter) later to say, "Oh, he's so much better. He got out of bed. He kept putting his arms around me, and his grip was so strong. I know he's going to get well. I know he's going to be all right."
Roy (Walt's eldest brother) visited him that evening, and Walt seemed weak but lucid. The two brothers talked quietly about company matters, and Walt was intent on discussing Disney World and EPCOT. He stared at the ceiling which was covered with foot-square acoustical tiles, and he raised a faltering hand to point out the design of the Florida property. Roy, too, was encouraged by Walt's appearance, and he remarked to Edna that night that he thought Walt had a good chance to recover.
Walt Disney died at nine-thirty the next morning (December 15, 1966) of an acute circulatory collapse, according to the death certificate.
Sorrow and disbelief encircled the world. -- Excerpted from "Walt Disney: An American Original" by Bob Thomas
Eric Sevareid on the CBS Evening News seemed to express the feelings of most Americans:
It would take more time than anybody has around the daily news shops to think of the right thing to say about Walt Disney. He was an original; not just an American original, but an original, period.
He was a happy accident; one of the happiest this century has experienced; and judging by the way it's been behaving in spite of all Disney tried to tell it about laughter, love, children, puppies and sunrises, the century hardly deserved him. ... People are saying we'll never see his like again.

I vividly remember when the news broke that Walt had passed. It was a very sad time, but his legend and work will live on for untold years. Like most people of my generation, Walt will also forever be linked to special memories of an amazing era. It was a great time to be a child.

My mother was 10 when Walt passed and she told me that she still remembers that day like it recently happened. She also remembers my grandmother crying.. My generation, the previous and the next will be forever grateful for that wonderful man and everyone in the Disney Company for what they brought to this world.

In second grade close to D'land, I remember how kids were so saddened by the death of Uncle Walt. What did not strike us then as kids but does now is how young he was, how much more he could have done except for the cancer.

I heard/read that he was a real task master, and he expected a lot of his employees. But its plain to see that they were proud of the organization for which they worked, and they really loved and cared about their boss.

Suzanne Pleshette said when she and Dean Jones were filming Blackbeards Ghost, Walt came to the set and gave her a big hug and she saw how bad he looked. She said she knew that he didn't have long left to live and that might be last time she would ever see him. She went home after work and cried all night over him. Sad to say that Suzanne would die of the same disease that took Walt. They were both chain smokers.

Without doubt, the very happiest days of my life were during the 3 trips I went on to Walt Disney World. Pure Joy each almost-magical time. Thank you for taking me there, Mum, OH we had such FUN! Thank you Dad for working hard to pay for those great adventures of ours in Orlando. Thank you, God, for Walt Disney…and I mean that fervently. 💙🙏✝️💜

Since Cigarettes did him in, I am surprised that anti-smoking activists didn't try to use the death of such a popular person to further their message.
@irwinisidro
@irwinisidro 9 лет назад
More likely because it's not something the general public would think of Walt. He was very private when he smoked and made sure there was no photograph or word that he smoked. He said he didn't want kids and people to pick up "bad habits."

To those who may not be aware, the postal service will issue a commemorative stamp to a person deemed to be of importance 10 years, or more, after their passing. The exceptions to this rule are past presidents and Walt Disney. Disney had a stamp honoring him released on 9/11/68. His contribution to our society was so pronounced that the post office made an exception to the 10 year rule. Though I do not care for the stamp, I was moved by the postal service decision to honor him.

I teared up a little at this one... It's so sad when you think we could have easily had another 20 years with Walt. Who knows what the Disney company, and the world, would have been like if he stuck around?
